About John
Hello,

Thanks so much for taking the time to inquire about studying music with me.

Music and studying music has always been a passionate experience for me. I have been so blessed with the teachers and fellow musicians in my life. You should realize that your study of music may start with me, but it will last your entire lifetime. I hope that all of your life you will have a rewarding relationship to music and the spirit of great sounds!

I have performed in great jazz clubs in New York, on Broadway, and performing arts centers across the country. I'm currently playing in many great performing ensembles. I have put out two CD's as a leader and played on multiple CD's for other artists.

It has been my pleasure to teach privately, as well as in the classroom for 15 years. I enjoy performing many different types of music. I pri
de myself on being very open minded in terms of musical taste. Never apologize for liking what you like! I bet there is something in that music which is great. I can't wait to learn something from the music you introduce to me.

I be glad to provide a full resume to anyone who requests it.

*** Lesson Details ***

My most important goal for each student is that they get to where they want to be musically.

I want the student to be able to play the way he or she wants to play. If you want to learn to play one song, that is great! If you want to learn to play one classical etude that is just as great! If you want to learn how to play in a salsa band, bravo! I treat the desires of my students as my curriculum. Each student will receive special prep time from me each week. I pride myself in taking the time and energy to prepare for each meeting. Every time you complete a lesson, it is my hope that you are walking away as a better musician.

In the beginning I hope to find what will musically interests you the most. Usually, you might have a goal that requires you to play on a higher level than you do presently. If that is true, we might take some time to figure out a road map to get you to that place. Along the way, I'm sure you and I will learn many new concepts and techniques that aid you in becoming the bassist/musician you want to be.

And rest assured, the teacher always learns from the student...this is the best part of teaching: learning from the student.

*** Studio Equipment ***

Studio: 3 electric basses, plenty of amps and chords, one acoustic bass, piano, ukulele, guitar, computer playback and recording.

*** Travel Equipment ***
As requested

*** Specialties ***
I have been lucky to play tons of different types of music. I believe I can give musicians and aspiring musicians a deep understanding of what is most important in many different styles of music. Music I have been lucky enough to study and play professionally: Jazz, Rock, Funk, Afro-Cuban, Brazilian, Blues, Classical, Pop.
I'm also a very good transcriber, so if there is a song you heard on the radio we can definitely play it! Ear training could be an area in which I could be of service to you as well.
I have many arranging and composing credits and I would be glad to help students in this area whenever requested.

Love my lessons

John is an amazing teacher all around. Very professional and good at getting me to understand things which may be a bit confusing. I am currently reading and playing between four books and I never thought it would be possible especially just after taking lessons for a year. Sometimes I feel a bit frustraited when I am not able to play certain pieces or when I dont understand a concept but John is great at breaking everything down and making it easier. I am now realizing how my piano skills can be utilizied in my other music projects. When I attend my lessons I am reminded why I love having them so much. With him as my instructor I can see my skills improving and I know I will only get better. I recommend piano lessons to everyone and if you are looking to have a great teacher John is your go to person !

About Paul Jared
Hi, I am a native New Yorker and a guitar player since age 13. I played in blues/rock bands throughout my teens, getting to play the legendary clubs of my Greenwich Village neighborhood. My discovery of Spanish classical guitar music occurred in college at UC Berkeley, and I graduated with a BA in Music, then spent two years playing in Europe, before returning home and forming the band Not Heaven; we played the club circuit, Danceteria to CBGB.

I also began teaching at the American Institute of Guitar in NYC, and writing guitar instruction books (still in print!). Along the way I did a Master’s in Guitar Performance at Stony Brook, and have continued to publish, perform and teach the music which inspires me.

Classical and Flamenco music are my primary involvement, as a teacher, performer and composer.

About Alex
My teaching philosophy:

I have been helping students discover ease and joy in singing for over ten years, and in many different styles. Each journey is different, but I am certain I can help you accomplish your goals. No two voices are alike, and we will work together to discover your particular strengths. Expect to laugh and have some fun along the way!!!

Working with the physical structure of your face and body, we'll uncover ways to free you FROM yourself. Many bad vocal habits are learned through everyday life - together we can identify these to bring you closer to the optimal function of your voice. I will provide a foundation of knowledge for effective breathing and posture, as well as fill your 'toolbox' with many practical methods to alleviate tensions and encourage optimal resonance. As I am an active professional singer
, I teach largely through demonstration accompanied by easily understandable technical language aimed to resonate with the student's natural sense memory and vocabulary. These are methods I have practiced myself over many years as a professional singer at the world's great opera houses, and I know they will help serve your artistry and desire to be expressive, confident and engaging to an audience of 1 or 10,000.

Alex Lawrence is an active professional operatic and concert baritone based in NYC and has enjoyed an international performing career for the past 7 years since his debut at the Theater Basel, Switzerland and subsequently as an ensemble member of the Zurich Opera House, from 2012-2016. He has enjoyed performing major roles with some of the world's most prestigious opera and theater companies including the Zurich Opera, Theater Basel, The Glimmerglass Festival, The Lucerne Festival, The Los Angeles Philharmonic, The Tanglewood Festival, The Ravinia Festival, The Vancouver Opera, and many more. He has participated in top international Young Artist Programs including the Glimmerglass Festival, The Zurich Opera and the Ravinia Festival Steans Institute for Singers. Alex is a graduate of Northwestern University (B.M. Voice '07) and the prestigious Academy of Vocal Arts (A.D. '11), and is a recipient of the annual Lenore Annenberg Fellowship in the Arts. He has been a top prizewinner in several major international competitions, including the Opera Index Foundation, The Gerda Lissner Foundation and the Licia Albanese Puccini Foundation. He was a semi-finalist at Operalia, 2014. Alex Lawrence, Baritone, is represented by Zemsky/Green Artists management, one of the leading classical vocal agencies in the world.

Alex's teaching influences include his mentor's Patricia McCaffrey, Arthur Levy, both major voice instructors in the New York City classical vocal scene.

I have really enjoyed working with Alex-- He has given me some great tools and guidance for working on technique in a healthy way, and I have left every lesson excited to practice and apply what we work on. He always challenges me in a very constructive manner and makes lessons a safe place to take risks and experiment. As someone who has a degree in voice and has gone through a few teachers, I would definitely recommend him, weather you are a beginner or a more studied singer.

Alex is a brilliant man and a terrific professional singer who has incorporated and consolidated correct and admirable vocal knowledge and has an insight and perception into voices and the root cause of issues and the path to improving a voice. His understanding of the uniqueness of each voice with an underlying bel canto, vocally scientific and yet musically based methodology is outstanding. I would trust Alex with any singer and I know any voice type in any type of repertoire, musical theatre and jazz and even pop, would benefit greatly. he is a deep thinker, but an outgoing and generous individual with great patience. I admire him greatly and I know he is already an outstanding teacher, though his professional career is giving him a great balance, and a good insight into the world each singer is venturing into. A uniquely qualified person.

Not only is Alex a kind, patient, and encouraging teacher, but he also presents valuable technical information in a clear and comprehensible manner. I leave each lesson feeling vocally fresh and with new nuggets of vocal wisdom to think about during the week.

I also feel that I can apply the vocal technique Alex teaches to the many different genres of music that I sing (opera, musical theater, gospel, etc.)

Would highly recommend Alex!! He’s a gem!

I'm a professional singer/teacher residing in New York City with degrees from Indiana State University, and New York University with a specialization in Classical Art Song, Musical Theatre Repertoire, and Vocal Pedagogy.

Every lesson is about YOU. So each week we will take a look at your goals for the lesson, whether you are preparing for college auditions, school talents shows, a desire to work with music theory, or piano skills, this is your opportunity to explore. Everything is possible.

As a professional singer myself, I am constantly auditioning on broadway, off-broadway, and for smaller local and regional theater opportunities. I believe that as a teacher I have to continue to be in the field and learning as the industry continues to change. I have to be aware of the opportunities in this business. I have been hired by pr
ofessional opera and musical theatre companies, in additional to large choral works as a soloist, and have a private studio in Washington Heights.

Prior to NYC I taught middle school choir for 200+ students, of which I received teacher of the year in 2012. I also still hold a valid teaching license in the state of Indiana and currently applying toward my NYS teaching certification.

I look forward to hearing your beautiful voice and helping you to embrace music. Feel free to check out my website for any further information!

Over 30 years teaching students of all levels: children, adults, professionals/teacher training. Professor at Hunter College and on faculty at Manhattan School of Music Pre-college.

I feel responsible to get my students excited about classical music and pique their curiosity about contemporary music. These students are the future of our art, if not as performers, then definitely as audiences, patrons and administrators. It is our mandate to guide these students to appreciate and understand how the study of music will enhance their lives, no matter what field they choose.

Music is an essential aspect of who we are as human beings. My goal, then, is to develop in students a love of music, and an enjoyment of learning how to play the piano. I host performance opportunities for students to perform on stage, as well as piano parties an
d piano 4-hands group-a-thons. I use technology when appropriate to help kids get excited about learning.

I’m often asked whether I enjoy starting young children at the piano. My answer is always the same: give me a student, and I will be thrilled to guide my pupil and get him or her excited about studying. The age is unimportant. The challenge is keeping a student engaged and enthusiastic along with the hard work that goes into training. No matter the student’s age or level, educators have an enormous responsibility to create and nurture life learners, and to ignite a curiosity and passion for the arts.

What matters, then, is to develop the skills inherent to studying music: discipline, inquisitiveness, problem-solving, and, most importantly, active and acute listening.

Our 10 year old son began learning from Claudia nearly 3 years ago. We all love her! We weren't sure if he would enjoy learning the piano, but Claudia ignited his interest and he has been very engaged ever since. The hour that he spends with her each week is rigorous, yet it passes quickly and he always leaves with a smile. His level of playing far surpasses our expectations. Each week, she emails us a custom practice log with notes about which pieces he should study. She is thoughtful about making sure that he has a grounding in the mechanics, while enabling his talent and natural feel for music. Each piece that he is assigned to play is purposeful and he really enjoys his repertoire. We are due to purchase a piano and Claudia is giving us tips in that process as well. We feel so lucky to have found Claudia!
