Helen McDermott
Exceptional Violist, Masterful Teacher

Helen McDermott is an exceptionally talented violist who is also a masterful, empathetic teacher. She brings a truly unique combination of technical virtuosity, pedagogical professionalism, and psychological insight into the music studio. I know this from personal experience because I have greatly benefited from being one of her viola students.
Her vast experience as a professional violist gives her a wealth of technical knowledge, not only about how to play the viola but, more importantly, how to play beautiful music with this instrument. She has studied, and continues to study, different teaching methods, drawing from all of these approaches to develop a program of instruction designed to meet each student’s individual needs. She also connects empathetically with her students, creating an atmosphere of collaboration and mutual respect that alleviates anxiety, thereby allowing genuine learning to take place.
In short, her breadth and depth of expertise, in both musicianship and pedagogy, make her an ideal viola teacher who guides students on their path to realizing their full potential as a violist and as a complete musician.

Private Violin Teacher

I began teaching violin lessons privately 5 years ago and have had as many as 40 students at one time. I have had many beginner students of all ages, and welcome students of any age or level. I approach each one of my students individualistically, focusing on the kind of music that interests and excites them most, while also providing material and exercises to help strengthen the students’ musicianship and technical proficiency on the instrument. I believes in bettering my student’s abilities through encouragement and positive reinforcement, guiding them to find a love and commitment to music. I understand that above all else, music should feel fun and rewarding and serve as a way to express yourself. If you're not having fun, you're missing the point! I have taught classical music, jazz, fiddle, and pop, and have a background in the Suzuki Method.

About Livia

I am a violinist of 21 years formally trained in both classical and jazz music. I graduated from the University of Maryland in 2015, where I received my Bachelor of Music degree in violin performance, studying under performer and pedagogue Dr. James Stern (D.M.A., The Juilliard School.) Livia was great with my daughter! She has a wonderful personality and made the lesson really enjoyable.

Livia was my sons violin teacher for 3 years. We couldn’t have asked for a better teacher. My son started when he was in third grade with a different teacher, and it was not a good match. Livia came and met my son and they clicked right away. I asked my son (now in 7th grade) what to say in this review, he said that Livia is a great teacher, he learned a lot, and he had tons of fun. She has a laid back and patient manner. Because of her I believe he will have a lifelong love of violin. I give her my highest recommendation.

Milena taught me everything with a firm but gentle hand, and really pushed me to be the best I could be. Her lessons were really personalized to what I was capable of, and although I hit some rough spots it was usually because of my own practice habits. All in all, I’m very glad I had her as my teacher.

Milena really knows her stuff. She’s very consistent and really focused on teaching. If you follow her instructions you will improve. Thank you for the lessons Milena! I promise I will get better at practicing!

Hi!! When you study with me, I will tailor the lesson to fit your needs and YOUR goals. Method books may work awesome for some students, while others may prefer a more "by ear" approach. Whatever your music goals or needs may be, I will work with you to make sure they are achieved, planning your lesson around YOU. Questions during lessons are welcomed and encouraged. I do a recital during the summer also, because as an active performer, it is my firm belief that students learn faster and with more enthusiasm and interest when they have a specific goal to feel excited about.

About Arielle-Khrystiana

My students and students' parents have praised me for my musicianship, patience, and compassion. I am an operatic soprano and musical theater musician, thus making me a diverse and well-rounded instructor. In voice lessons, we will focus on vocalizes, excellent technique, theory, and appropriate re

Thomas is honestly an amazing musician and teacher. He was really patient with me. Despite having to deal with major timezone differences (as I live in Myanmar), he took the time to figure it out. Also, he helped me figure out the stuff it took me months to figure out. He also really knows what he's doing. I learned so much in that hour of practice. 10/10 would recommend him.

"Tatiana has been teaching me to play the violin for a little over a couple of months. She is very patient, and adapts her teaching methods to suit her students, and to help them do the best they can, at their level, with their instrument. Which, I think, is the best any teacher can do. I am an adult beginner, so I bring some things from daily life to classes (such as tension) that don't belong with the violin... and I appreciate how she works me on each learning goal, while helping me tackle technical challenges. Classes are focused and structured, but flexible. If that sounds like work, it not... Highly recommend!"
