I've been teaching contemporary drum set in Orange County for over a decade, and many of my students have gone on to not only play and read notated drum set music with ease, but have continued their studies at arts high-schools and music colleges, with several of them continuing on to the professional world. I use an award winning curriculum used at many music academies and conservatories, and have received accolades for my ability to retain many students for many years. Within the first few lessons, a new student will be able to understand the basics of rhythm and snare drum notation, play a plethora of relatable and cool sounding grooves, and build a foundation that will serve the student for a life time.

About Michael

Hi! My name is Michael and I am excited at the prospect of teaching you or your child... I absolutely love to teach, but not just because of my love for the drums or my life-long appreciation of music, but because of my enjoyment of people and the learning process itself. I feel that this is i

When my son's school mandated that all students learn an instrument and I found out that he had been assigned DRUMS, I was at a loss. The lessons provided by the school were basic and I didn't feel that my son was getting the full benefit of all the drums had to offer. Luckily, we found Mike!

Mike set my son at ease instantly. He is very personable and has the gift of getting to know his students in a genuine manner. His friendly demeanor and willingness to use humor, without talking down to his students, sets him apart. Mike took the time to get to know Tom, including his musical interests, so that he could create high-interest lessons that motivated my son to practice and increased his love of music. Mike was able to explain clearly to my son what they were doing, how to do it properly, and why doing it correctly was worth the time invested. Not having had experience with drums, I had no idea how much technique is involved! Mike provided not only drum lessons, but life lessons as well.

As a parent, I have always appreciated Mike's timely communication. I have never had to wonder when my son's lessons would be, when payment was due, or what to do when I had a scheduling conflict. (By the way, Mike understands the chaos that sometimes goes along with being a working parent.)

To sum things up, Mike is a charismatic teacher who uses his expertise to instruct his students in how to become exemplary musicians and people. I recommend him without reservations.

I have taken lessons with Mike for over 7 years, and getting into drumming has been the best thing that has happened in my life. Mike is an excellent teacher, who truly loves to teach. You feel his joy, he is never condescending, and he is never more than a couple steps away from making a silly joke.
Drums have given me a hobby to keep improving as I get older. It has given me a passion for music, both performing, and listening. It has also allowed me to have experiences I never would been able to have without learning the drums, such as playing in the Huntington Beach 4th of July Parade, winning 1st place with my high school drumline, and making lifelong friends as part of my high school's music program.
I highly encourage to take lessons with Mike. He is the best.
John
Mike has been teaching our son Luis for almost 5 years now. He’s now ten and his play is amazing. Equally as importantly as his knowledge and high skill level, he is a patient and kind man who is great with kids. He built a strong relationship with my son and as a result, Luis loves playing drums. He has just the right balance of support and encouragement to get him to learn without feeling like he’s pressured or it’s homework. Passion make perfect!!! I highly recommend Mike as a teacher for students of any age. He Rocks in many ways!

My teaching technique is learner-centered. I work with students to help them build a strong vocabulary of drum rudiments and have them apply their newly acquired drumming knowledge to the songs and genres that interest them most. I have found this to be ideal for those at the beginning and intermediate levels. For the advanced drummers out there, I may be able to assist with some minor application of technique or perhaps deviate from standard drumming practices to acquire a fuller awareness of the body's interaction with not only the drumsticks and drum set, but how to maintain total postural awareness.

For those interested in flamenco, I have a lifetime of experience with the rhythms of flamenco, am a professional cajón player, and study/perform flamenco guitar.

About David

Many years of drum instruction with students who have learned best with alternative learner-centered approaches including: extreme patience, slow to fast repetition of patterns and exercises, focused breathing, as well as sight-reading, rhythm and ear training. Students with: Asperger's, Autism, D

DAVID IS AN OUTSTANDING TEACHER IN EVERY RESPECT. HIS KNOWLEDGE OF SPANISH SEEMS EXCELLENT, AND HIS INTEREST IN THIS LANGUAGE IS CLEARLY VERY STRONG. THIS ALLOWS CLOSE ANALYSIS OF SPANISH, AND STANDS AS A SIGNIFICANT BENEFIT TO THE DIDACTIC PROCESS. IN TURN THIS PROMOTES A SPIRIT OF LEARNING IN CLASS WHICH IS INFORMATIVE AND GOOD FUN. FINALLY HIS KNOWLEDGE OF SPANISH/ENGLISH COGNATES AND INDO-EUROPEAN ROOTS IS UNUSUALLY BROAD, WHICH MAKES LEARNING SPANISH WITH HIM EASY AND ENTERTAINING. I BELIEVE DAVID HAS A TRUE VOCATION FOR TEACHING, AND I HOPE I CAN GO ON WITH LESSONS WITH HIM FOR SOME TIME TO COME.

I am a multi-instrumentalist with 8 years of collegiate education under my belt and coursework in music theory, jazz, composition, and audio engineering.

I perform professionally with groups on a weekly basis and play in a variety of styles.

Percussion was not my first instrument, so I had to work much harder to catch up to my peers. All of my formal education is strictly on auxiliary percussion, so I treat drum kit as an orchestra of percussion instruments, rather than a standard instrument. I am all about fostering growth through creativity and self-evaluation, and I seek to help students grow as musicians from a comprehensive perspective.

I walk students through more than just functional drumming; I enrich their knowledge and facility with studies in music theory, ear training, and composition to avoid training "drummers", but rather: musicians.

About Machado

I am a professional multi-instrumentalist, producer, composer, audio engineer, and educator based out of Portland, OR. I have 8 years of collegiate experience in performance, composition, theory, and pedagogy from Washington State University, University of Puget Sound, and Whitman College. I play

"Joan is very patient as an instructor. I appreciate the feedback she has given me on nuances in my body posture, my grip on the sticks, and seating position to help me be comfortable during the lessons. I began drum lessons with her early in my pregnancy and she has been very accommodating to my busy and hectic schedule."

"My son started learning the drums at age 5. Not only is he able to keep a beat but he is learning to read music. He is also being taught proper drumming techniques and that there is more to it than just banging sticks. Within these past two years, Mike built his confidence and gave him enough skills to go perform at his school's talent show. Each lesson my son comes out smiling and has a sense of accomplishment. He says his lessons are fun and that Mike is a cool teacher. Mike shows that he loves to teach and I couldnt be more pleased!!!!"

"I've been taking drum lessons with Mike for almost a year now. I can say with confidence that I've been progressing from lesson to lesson under his instruction and guidance.

If I were to describe Mike as a teacher so far, he would be the Yoda of drums; he's positive, gentle, and fun. But at the same time, he's firm and pushes you to be the best drummer you can be. Mike also calibrates his lesson based on your current drum level; he never teaches something that is too easy nor does he teach something that is too difficult. Instead, he has guided me through challenging but achievable exercises. Progression has been improving one baby-step at a time. This wouldn't have been possible without Mike's attention to detail, patience, encouragement, and continuous feedback.

With that being said, these small baby-steps over the past year have led to tremendous improvement in my skills in 2016. Looking forward to getting even better in 2017. I would highly recommend Mike for private lessons if you wish to be a JEDI DRUM MASTER!"

3 Ways to Play Complex Drum Patterns (With Audio)

As you advance in your drum lessons, you will want to take on more complicated drum patterns and grooves. Here, Federal Way, WA drum instructor Kendra M. explains how you can learn to play complex drum patterns... Complex drum patterns can be intimidating for new drum students. Take this "tricky" groove for example: Even though this groove sounds complex, there are actually several ways to break patterns like this one down into manageable parts. Before you know it, you'll be …
