I was a brand new student, with very little experience, trying to teach myself online. When I realized that wasn't working I searched for an instructor and found Mike. He has a very patient demeanor, can play all styles, and most importantly is an easy going and fun instructor. He teaches what you want to play, and I have rather eclectic taste in music...... So if wasn't familiar with a band/song, he has the ability to listen to it and play it right on the spot. Mike has an exceptional ear! You can't go wrong with him, so give him a try! You'll be very happy you did

I signed up to play guitar for "The Sound of Music" with Burbank Community Theater, and after I got the music I realized I was way over my head. So, I went to Mike hoping to get a lot of help. He's amazing. First, he sight-read all of my music, which is crazy. Then he was able to simplify it for me so I could play it and still make it sound good. If it wasn't for him I wouldn't have been able to do the show. And now that I've done the show successfully I have a whole new range of skills on the guitar and playing the songs I love is way easier.

I'm so grateful for Mike and everything he's taught me!

I have played keyboard myself since the age of 7, and have played professionally for the past 40 years.

About Rob
Originally from Chicago, I attended Chicago Musical College for 2 years before moving to Calif. and receiving my B.A. in music from Cal. State Northridge. I also have an M.A. in Education from there. I have been a band director in public schools for over 40 years. My bands have won over 50 1st place awards in music competitions. I have been playing keyboard professionally since the age of 14. I truly enjoy working with both kids and adults on a one on one basis, and provide a relaxed and friendly, yet goal-oriented experience.

*** Lesson Details ***
In each lesson, students will work on technique, music theory, and learn pieces (both from the method book and from supplementary material). I choose material for each student to use based on age, ability, and interest. I don't use a "one size fits all" curriculum. Although lessons are r
elaxed, I do expect students to do their part and work on the assigned materials at home. In addition,I enjoy playing along with students as soon as possible.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Music Room: upright piano, chair, sports memorabilia, room for parents to sit in on lesson

*** Travel Equipment ***
I expect students to provide instrument (except piano) and music (which I would select)

*** Specialties ***
Can teach any school band instrument and keyboard

Piano is my main instrument and the one I enjoy teaching the most. I think it is approachable, versatile, and immensely rewarding. I recommend piano lessons to anyone with an interest in music, as it is an amazing tool and perfect foundation for studying music.

IMPORTANT NOTE: My availability is very limited right now due to the amount of students I have, however please don't hesitate to message me requesting specific times that are currently unavailable -- I can often shuffle things around to accommodate different scheduling needs.

About Christopher
pianomancan.com

My name is Christopher, or Chris for short. I am a composer, arranger, pianist, vocalist, and private tutor. I have taught private lessons in classical and contemporary piano performance, vocal performance, guitar performance, music theory, and musicianship to local students for the past 10 years. I currently have nearly 40 weekly students all over Ventura County. I attended CSUN's school of music where I received my Bachelor's of Music in Music Composition. My other experience includes teaching at 2 different music studios (Perry Music Studios and Brookyln's Conservatory of Music), teaching Confirmation classes to teenagers at St. Jude's Catholic Church, and teaching English to Japanese high school students through the Rotary Youth Exchange Program.

My philosophy when it comes to doing anythi
ng with music is that it should be fun! Whether you're practicing a piece, playing with a band, writing something new, or even learning music theory, music is primarily about enjoying yourself and the others around you.

The best way to ensure that you enjoy yourself is to learn what you want to learn and play what you want to play. In addition to a standard curriculum, I want you to tell me what kind of music you're interested in and what kind of pieces you want to play! Do you love classic rock? Do you love pop? Blues? Jazz? Folk tunes? Opera? Or maybe you're a fan of the classical masters? Whatever the case may be, my number one goal is to make sure you're having fun while you develop your new talents.

I'm comfortable teaching students as young as 7 years of age, although I can teach even younger if they are especially well-behaved.

I really like working with Chris a lot for several reasons. First he is a very kind & enthusiastic teacher who is always very cheerful and always brings his best to the lessons. As an adult student, I'm not very confident about myself. He has helped to bring that confidence back. He was able to help me tackle the speed problem for a piece of music that I was having trouble with for a long time. And with just a few words of advice, he was able to help me fix the problem right away. Chris is truly a fantastic teacher! I'm glad to be his student.

I see my main job as a piano teacher to teach a student HOW to practice properly on their own and create a sustaining long term relationship with music. I emphasize simple rules of practice, such as slow practice with repetition, then break that down with hands separate practice and metronome and counting practice to apply to everything a student is currently studying. Ear training is also something I regularly work on with students every lesson. It is a simplicity of approach to music and the piano with which I think makes my teaching work, creating long lasting results, especially
in terms of one's deeper relationship with the art of music.

My lessons do vary from student to student though, depending on the student's interest and musical inclinations (i.e. whether they already have a good ear and sense of rhythm, etc.) However, ear training, theory and repertoire are applied to all students.

The private lesson experience is unique in that it allows for more “customized” instruction that group lessons or rehearsals alone are not able to give. The instructor and student work one on one as a “team” toward the ultimate goal: a better understanding of their instrument, and a higher level of musical development.

In every lesson, we will work to improve technique, theory, listening/music reading skills, among other things. I will assign exercises and/or pieces each week that are meant to challenge, not overwhelm! Sometimes I will assign an exercise that is expressly meant for a particular area in which the student may not be the strongest, in an effort to develop that area. Learning an instrument is a skill that takes time to develop, and it is within the journey where most valuable learning takes place!

About Amanda
Amanda is a professional Pittsburgh-area flutist and private teacher. She has served as principal flutist with the Pittsburgh Philharmonic as well as second flute/piccolo with the Undercroft Opera. She has also served as a substitute flutist for the Edgewood, Westmoreland and Johnstown Symphonies. Amanda also performs with the Dolce Appassionato Trio, a chamber ensemble comprised of flute, cello, and piano. She is active as a soloist, performing in a variety of venues throughout the Pittsburgh region.

An ardent advocate of early music and historical performance, Amanda also plays the baroque flute. She has performed in masterclasses for internationally known baroque flutists Kim Pineda, Janet See, and Barthold Kuijken.

Amanda received a Bachelor of Music degree in music education from Seton Hill University, and a Master of Music de

John is a fantastic instructor. He has a love for educating others on musical expression and he is a wellspring of musical knowledge. He provides a depth to the piano that I wouldn't have noticed if I taught myself how to play.

John emphasized how to shape musical phrases to make music as opposed to a collection of notes. He had a good ear for honing in on my weaknesses such as how some notes that I played stuck out or the movement of my arms. Most importantly, he taught me how to approach practicing the piano in an effective way. I learned how to listen to myself and how give each note, phrase, and piece the attention and musicality it needed to sound beautifully.

For an adult learner as myself, he was accommodating with how busy I was. He adjusted to my needs and work schedule and taught at a reasonable pace. However, he also never veered from his expectations and praised what I was doing right and provided methods to fix what I was doing wrong.

Although there were times when John expressed his passion for music by delving into tangents on the broader historical significance of pieces, his mini-lectures were never irrelevant nor inappropriate. For example, he commented on how in waltzes, the rhythm on the left hand would need to emulate how a Romantic era string section would play it. For anyone who is serious about how or why pieces of music are meant to be played in a certain way, John is great about contextualizing pieces to make them sound great.

Most importantly, he made practicing piano something that was both enjoyable and challenging, which is difficult to find in a teacher. I owe a great deal of my musicianship to John and he met my expectations of learning the piano. Thank you!

Why should your child play a musical instruments? Especially, such a complicated to learn musical instrument as a piano. It develops a lot of skills such as musical taste, memory, fine motor skills (which is very good for child’s mind developing) and ear for music. Because I’m just starting to teach kids I offer a small fee for this complex subject. 30$/hour. If you don’t have a piano and not sure if your kid will actually want to play in a long term, I have an option for you. I work with kids from 6 to 15 years old. It’s never too late to learn! So, if you’re older than that but still ready to learn, write me a message and we’ll work. I promise individual approach for my students.

Piano Tips and Techniques: Playing Glissandos
There are many musical terms that you will hear when learning to play any instrument, and the piano is no exception. You probably started off with terms related to tempo, such as largo and allegro, and progressed accordingly. You will learn new terms at every level, so maybe you have already heard the word glissando. Even if you haven’t heard of the term, you probably have heard a glissando in music. For example, Jerry Lee Lewis’s song "Great Balls of Fire" uses glissandos. Derived from t
