The ukulele is a creative adaptation and redesign of the machete de braga, a small stringed instrument that was introduced to Hawaii by Portuguese immigrants in August of 1879. The Hawaiian people fell in love with the sound of the instrument and named it “ukulele" because the fingers of the performer dancing around on the neck and strings as a song was played resembled jumping fleas. Ukulele means jumping fleas in the Hawaiian language.

Since the ukulele is related to a European instrument and the guitar from Spain, the relative tuning is the same. It should be tuned a perfect fourth up from a guitar, so the first string is tuned to an A, second string should be tuned to an E, third string will be a C, & the fourth string should be tuned to a G an octave up. Most ukuleles have a fourth string that is an octave above what the normal progression would be of most stringed instruments. After the first lesson you will be making music, playing songs and be on your way to achieving your musical goals with the ukulele. Playing Ukulele requires a knowledge of chords, melody, strumming technique as well as knowing songs all of which we will begin to learn in your first lesson.

With 10+ years as a music teacher and professional musician I have picked up many approaches that will insure you are making the most progress and truly finding your musical voice.

I'm a professional musician and instructor, teaching various instruments for over ten years. My main instruments are guitar and drums/percussion, but I've also played and taught piano, mandolin, ukulele, and harmonica.

I would love to work with novice ukulele players of any age, to get you through the basics - chords, melodies, rhythms, strumming, finger-picking, and so much more! We can learn popular songs for the ukulele and/or talk about reading and writing music on the ukulele. I'll structure lessons according to the age, skill level, and interest of the student.

I can teach all levels and many styles. I make it easy for you to learn at your own pace so you can achieve your goals and have fun playing music.

I've been playing ukulele for 3 years. I have a lot of musical experience, playing instruments for 20 years and teaching for 10. Ukulele is a lot of fun and I look forward to helping you learn songs and styles that you're interested in!
