The ukulele is a creative adaptation and redesign of the machete de braga, a small stringed instrument that was introduced to Hawaii by Portuguese immigrants in August of 1879. The Hawaiian people fell in love with the sound of the instrument and named it “ukulele" because the fingers of the performer dancing around on the neck and strings as a song was played resembled jumping fleas. Ukulele means jumping fleas in the Hawaiian language.

Since the ukulele is related to a European instrument and the guitar from Spain, the relative tuning is the same. It should be tuned a perfect fourth up from a guitar, so the first string is tuned to an A, second string should be tuned to an E, third string will be a C, & the fourth string should be tuned to a G an octave up. Most ukuleles have a fourth string that is an octave above what the normal progression would be of most stringed instruments. If your G string is not tuned an octave up it’s a larger size than the average ukulele G string ...

Beginning ukulele students will be taught the basics in a fun but productive way. I will teach a strong foundation so a student can move forward with confidence. Lessons would be individualized to focus on areas that need the most guidance.

You will learn the basics about rhythm, harmony, and melody and how they apply to ukulele. You will become fluent in the 12 basic keys to a degree where you can play simple songs in any of them.

About Melissa

I have been teaching since 2006 on a variety of topics. I graduated with an BA from the University of Wisconsin. My degree is in History with and emphasis on East Asian history. I've taught all age groups from age 2 up to retirees. My teaching experience includes one-on-one and group classes

Rodrigo is an excellent instructor! He explains everything thoroughly and makes the accordion less intimidating to play.
Barbara Judd
I have been taking accordion lessons from Rodrigo for about 6 months. I had never been successful playing a couple of instruments from long ago. I have now made great progress from Rodrigo's instructions. He helps me understand music theory, reading music, simplifying music, and how to charge my musical working memory. I have long been a collector of music. This is the first time I've felt progress and success.

"Adam does a great job of adjusting to the student's level of experience. I'm a beginner with some minimal uke experience, and he adjusted the pace of the lesson accordingly. I especially like his emphasis on contemporary music; he seems to have fun with music which, as someone who endured years of strict classical piano training as a kid, I find very refreshing."
