About Justine D.
CloseI have been playing pop and rock guitar for 14 years and am excited about the opportunity to share my passion for the instrument with you! Our first lesson will begin with a quick assessment of your musical background, experience with the instrument, and your musical goals. Your next lessons will build on that foundation to support the goals you want to achieve.
Whether it's starting a band with friends, getting stronger on technique, or learning how to play in a new style or genre, we'll work together to reach your goals!
About Justine
Music was a big part of every single one of my school years, and I was lucky enough to be able to double major in music and psychology at Kalamazoo College once I graduated from high school.
My passion for music has taken me abroad, to London, where I studied Western & Russian art music and took classes in popular music studies at Goldsmiths College, University of London.
It spurred my move across the country to New York, where I developed a better understanding of how important creativity is to all of us -- especially musicians! -- at Teachers College, Columbia University.
And, most importantly, it's allowed me to do what I love from my home in San Diego, teaching privately both i
I'm excited to get started with you and help you set and reach your musical goals!
*** Online & In-Person Lesson Details ***
It's most important to me that you are excited and motivated about your music lessons! I am a flexible instructor and am always open to hearing your ideas for songs. After working together to identify your beginning knowledge of music and your instrument, we'll progress from song to song to develop your musical abilities.
All of my online and in-person lessons begin by warming up with a quick exercise, scale, or even an improvisational activity. We'll use the music you love to develop your guitar technique, learn new chords, and sharpen your listening skills.
You'll gain an understanding of what makes the music work and why the notes, rhythms, and harmonies are what they are.
The music we study can also serve as inspiration for creativity. I may ask you to come to the next class with a short composition of your own or we'll finish a lesson by improvising together on related musical themes.
I'll do my best to make my expectations for you clear and at the end of every lesson, we'll go over what we accomplished together and make sure you understand what to work on before our next class.
*** Additional Online Information ***
Online lessons can be just as effective as in-person lessons for teaching you the basics of your instrument, developing technique, and achieving your musical goals! I'll use screen sharing to display music, chords, and scale charts during the lessons. Materials will be emailed to you as well for you to use at home. And communication is extra important when it comes to online lessons; because I can't make physical adjustments, I'll often assess how you hold your musical instrument and describe how you can make the adjustments yourself.
Please note that a high-speed internet connection is needed in order to make sure that we can see and hear each other appropriately. In addition, I expect that you will be able to provide your own musical instrument (and amplifier, if you have an electric instrument) to use during the lesson.
*** Additional In-Person Information ***
I teach my in-person lessons from my home office with comfortable seating for both students and parents. I expect that you will be able to provide your own musical instrument to use during the lesson.
I will have music stands available for use during lessons and will accompany and demonstrate on my musical instruments. I will have an amplifier and cables, but if you prefer to bring your own amplifier you can do that, too!
Please note that I have two cats; they'll be in an enclosed room away from where we will have lessons, but if you have cat allergies this may not be a good fit.

I will provide teaching materials, obviously. I can also bring a music stand, or an extra guitar to my lessons if the student doesn't have one. I will also be making regular print-outs on my own to hand out to my student.
*** Specialties ***
I received my degree in Jazz Performance with the Guitar as my main instrument. My favorite styles are jazz, blues, rock, and pop. I could teach Bass Guitar, Piano, and Ukulele till about an intermediate level. I took four semesters of Piano classes at CSULB so I learned how to play all scales and arpeggios two hands and two octaves. However, I'd like to focus mainly on teaching the guitar to all levels, especially to those who are focused and dedicated to the instrument.
For whatever reason, I have a good knack for theory and ear training as well, so I could always teach Music Theory as well. I'd be a great Jazz Theory teacher.

Reviews From Students and Parents (Piano - Guitar - Voice)
“I just wanted to say Thank You and let you know how much I appreciate all the information and help you have given Mikey. You helped him form a great hobby that he loves to do and the family loves to hear. He has come so far since his first lesson and I am happy you kept the Piano lessons interesting for him. Thanks again for being a kind, great teacher to him.” - Cheryl, 5 Stars!
“Steven B, a patient, gifted teacher has supervised my studies on guitar with good humor, wit and flexibility. I would recommend him without hesitation to players young and old.” - Tim, 5 Stars!
“I took voice and piano lessons in Steven B’s Coronado Music Studio and also online via Skype. Both experiences were great, and it was really convenient to do the lessons on Skype. Steven B is an excellent teacher, and he is very patient. I recommend him to anyone who wants to learn to play an instrument or sing!” - Kat , 5 Stars!
“Steven B’s fun and patient teaching style rocks. I see how his bright, fun-loving personality, and knowledge of music for piano makes him top choice as my daughter’s music instructor.” - Anthony, 5 Stars!
“Steven B is a wonderful teacher! He is talented, always enthusiastic, and extremely motivational! Each lesson is designed specifically for our daughter Kelsey's ability and desired genre of music! Kelsey began guitar and vocal lessons in the Coronado studio and is now taking lessons via Skype since our move to Virginia. The lessons are convenient, affordable, and productive. We are excited to be able to still have Steven B as her guitar and vocal teacher!” - Amy, 5 Stars!
“I came to Steven B as a beginner in piano and I took the piano lessons on my Casio keyboard. I just wanted to learn my favorite songs. Steven B got me into the music I really enjoy! In only three months, I was able to play and sing a song I truly love titled “Angel” from Sarah McLachian. My teacher said I performed it as well as the artist. My friends, loved my performance of the song!” - Katrina, 5 Stars!
“My son has taken guitar and voice lessons with Steven B for the last year. We are pleased with classes and the improvement we've seen in comparison to a previous instructor. Steven B is punctual and extremely respectful of the time and money it takes to provide lessons. He can be counted on to be both friendly and professional. He comes prepared for lessons and expects the same of his students. If you are serious about learning and improving your skills, we highly recommend him.” - Christina, 5 Stars!
“My time in being instructed by Steven B on piano was a great, informative experience. Ever since the first lesson, he is a very good teacher that clearly knows what he is doing. Mr. Bruce taught me at my own pace, taking time to help me work on skills, especially small details that help me perform much better. He is a very skilled instructor, teaching me pieces from not only music books that he provides, but also the valuable skill of learning by ear, a skill few other teachers bother to touch on. Steven B has helped on a number of occasions with songs that I am learning on my own and fit time into our lessons to work on them. He is always willing to let the student work on what they like as well as what he gives out. When I once mentioned my liking for jazz, we soon started an in-depth series of lessons into the genre, teaching me much more than I ever knew prior to it. I’ve never felt pressured by my assignments and pieces to bring home, as Steven B knows everyone goes at their own pace and can take anytime from a few days to a few weeks to learn a song. My time with him was a very fun and informative time that I thoroughly enjoyed.” - Michael, 5 Stars!

One of his most outstanding teaching features is that he has an entirely unique approach to ear training (playing by ear). He creates customized playing-by-ear, step-by-step, walk-through recordings--which he professionally produces in his home studio.
These recordings break down a piece in such a way which allows a student to learn how to recognize intervals, chords, chord inversions, melodic lines, and more.
I cannot emphasize enough the (often under-appreciated) value of such ear training for students at all levels.

Learning to play the guitar was one of the best decisions I ever made and I hope to pass the knowledge I have learned on to you. From my lessons you can expect to learn how to read notes and chord symbols. We will also spend time learning a combination of your favorite songs and songs that I think would help you grow as a musician. Learning proper technique when playing guitar will also be of primary focus. Although I am a Jazz guitarist, I would be more than happy to focus on any style you prefer. I can teach you to play electric guitar, acoustic guitar, or both!
