Music Theory is what ties everything together, your understanding, or lack, of it impacts your ability to make the notes come to life. I can help you improve sight reading ability, improve your understanding of music theory and give you the tools you need to handle the mental side of music.

About Gail
I studied music from elementary school through high school, taking a break to have a family. After I volunteered to teach Kindergarten and first grade music at a school in Lakeside, I picked up my instruments and began to study again in earnest. Many hours of study, lessons and practice later, I am a better musician than I have ever been, and I've also gained a valuable perspective on teaching that I never could have had by simply being a musician.

I currently play viola with Equinox Quartet, playing Renaissance music up through the Baroque period.

My strengths lie in working with young children, helping them both understand music and love it. My goal for every student is to leave me having a strong understanding of theory, musicianship and desire to seek out more opportunities for growth. I work with each student to tailor a prog
ram specifically for their needs, from working through simple bowing mechanics issues to the psychology of performance. Each student has different challenges to overcome, and simply using a one-size fits all approach is not going to help them.

I pride myself in being flexible and available to to my students for questions, whenever they may need to ask them. I believe that you shouldn't have to wait for the next lesson to have the question answered that may just make the pieces start coming together a bit quicker for you.

*** Lesson Details ***
A typical lesson consists of checking student's progress, addressing any immediate issues and working on skill building.

OK, so those are the basics, but what happens is so much more than that! One student may have trouble hitting a C#, so we'll work on those. Another may have trouble relaxing, we might spend some time on breathing exercises to help with that. Still another might have a death grip on the neck of their instrument, so we'll do some exercises to help relax their hands.

My goal is to help students get well on their way to a lifetime love of learning and making music.

In 3-6 months, they should be:
* Reading music consistently at a level appropriate to their progress.
* Developing an understanding of rhythm and meter.
* Placing their fingers properly, and reliably for the most part.
* Developing correct posture and holding their instrument and bow in a relaxed manner that suits their body type and facilitates the freedom of movement required for great music.

*** Studio Equipment ***
music stand, music

*** Travel Equipment ***
Viola or violin, music stand, music.

*** Specialties ***
Classically trained, but I realize not everyone learns the same way, so a hardcore theory based approach is not always the right choice. We work together to develop a plan that will work and help foster a love of making music.

I specialize in working with kids of all ages. Don't we all have a little kid inside us just itching to get out and play?

My newbie (beginner with zero experience) son has been taking violin lessons via skype for almost 2 years now. I specifically was looking for a teacher who could meet us over the internet, considering I needed a break from the commute. Although I wasn't sure this could work, I gave it a shot...& I am SOOO glad I did! I love the flexibility for our lessons to be in the early morning before school, we could only do this online.

My son LOVES playing his violin! It's funny because he wanted to quit once or twice when he came upon new challenges, etc. Gail works patiently with him as he gains confidence, slowly but surely he has improved dramatically. She has customized his lessons perfectly to fit his needs which is what I was hoping for. Online accompaniment to his songs made it even more fun & we just started a fiddle book (my son's request) which he is enjoying enormously.

My son picks up his violin & plays on his own all the time, WOW! He sounds great, is learning good technique & theory, but most importantly he was given a chance to enjoy the learning process, to me this is priceless. You won't be disappointed with Gail, she is a GREAT teacher! So glad we found her!!!

Side note: In the beginning I was trying to figure out how to tune the violin for my son, & fingering. The snark tuner & the chinatera fingerboard sticker gave me some needed confidence that we could do this online.

Gail is a very good and kind violin teacher and was just perfect for my son's introduction to instrument. He really enjoyed the lessons and learning how to play each of the strings then putting them together in a song. It was a wonderful experience.

About John
I am a 36 year old professional musician, and music and tennis Instructor. I teach Trumpet, French Horn, singing and tennis. I have 25 years experience playing trumpet, French Horn and Singing and play in several groups around the San Diego area including:
The New City Sinfonia (Chamber Orchestra)
The Amalgamated, (a Ska/Reggae Band)
Full Strength Funk Band
Heartland Brass Ensemble
Trumpets R Us
Filarmonica Portuguesa Uniao De San Diego
Tierrasanta Lutheran Church,
Elk Tones Big Band
Dim The Lights Disco Tribute Band

I am very passionate about music, from learning to teaching, practicing, performing and recording. Every day my goal is to promote music, learn, practice and help people enjoy music either by listening or performing.

*** Lesson Details ***
Lessons will start with good solid warm-up exercises focusing on
breathing and proper technique for Brass playing.
The 2nd part of lessons will be technique, Scales and method books for trumpet and french horn.
The last part of lessons will be working on Solo repertoire and learning songs for performance, sight reading, playing duets and learning jazz improvisation if interested. Lessons will include sight reading, play along/sing along CD's Scales and technique as well as theory.

For my Trumpet Students I use Herbert L. Clarke Technical Studies Book to help improve aerobic endurance, technical and finger velocity as well as production of good tone quality. I will also use the Earl Irons Group of 27 exercises as well as the Max Schlossberg Method to help improve air flow, breathing control and fluidity of sound throughout all registers. I also use the J. B. Arban's Conservatory method for other techniques including scales, double and triple tonguing, intervals as well as duets and solo repertoire.
For jazz minded students I will start with basic fundamentals of improvisation including melodic improv, Blues forms and blues scales as well as reading through chord changes and playing in several modes and other scales used in jazz.

I also provide tailored instruction on Bugling, and the proper playing of military bugle calls for those students interested as well as those involved with Boy Scouts who wish to earn their Bugle Merit Badge.

For my French Horn Students I will use the same technique books as Trumpet but learning traditional French Horn Solo repertoire, as well as Brass quintet/choir repertoire and orchestral and concert repertoire. Focus for French Horn students will be mainly on control of partials and tuning techniques.

For my Voice students I will start with good breathing technique and warm up exercises designed to get the vocal chords warmed up and get all the other muscles relaxed in order to produce great tone quality. Focus will be on intonation, and learning to use the air and support to extend the vocalists range higher and lower as well as gain power and confidence in singing.
Each Vocal student will have a piece to practice or will bring a piece of their choosing in that they would like to learn and this will be used to apply the techniques learned at the beginning of lessons. Styles of singing that I sing and can teach are Classical, Jazz, Big Band and Standards, Oldies, Pop, Country, Soul, Rock, R&B, Christian Rock and Church Music and also harmonizing like in a duet style or choir/vocal ensemble setting. I will also teach performance techniques, showmanship, stage presence and the overall performance package every singer needs to have confidence while singing.

I am a classically trained musician on Trumpet, French Horn and Voice and reading music, articulations, dynamics and learning musical forms is an essential part to any performers success. I also have studied various jazz styles and improvisational techniques as well. I want to teach students the basics of good musicianship and help them to excel in learning, practicing and performing in their own selected styles of music, whether its classical music, or jazz/rock/pop/country and any other styles students are interested in.

For Academic students who need tutoring I have a very extensive background in history, specifically focusing on US History, Military History, and the study of different eras including major war eras. Academic tutoring can be geared towards the understanding, comprehension and critical thinking understanding of the subject matter, as well as research, essay writing, as well as public speaking and project presentation.

For Tennis Students, I focus on the basics from footwork, to basic swing mechanics as well as strategy. Tennis lessons can be geared to develop specific areas of the game of tennis, or an overall game improvement whether for those who want to be competitive, or just enjoy a friendly game. I am also willing to do group lessons of up to 4-5 players to enhance a group learning environment as well as combining the skills from each player to enhance the other and create a fun learning environment on the tennis court.
*** Studio Equipment ***

My main teaching location is my private studio in Spring Valley and at the Ramona Music Center in downtown Ramona for students in the area. I have all items needed including music stands, CD player for play along programs as well as an upright piano.

*** Travel Equipment ***
When traveling I can bring my own personal music stand and electric keyboard with stand as well. Technique and song repertoire and theory books I can provide when needed.
For tennis instruction I have my own rackets as well as a ball hopper full of practice balls to bring to any location or public open tennis court. I also have reels of string and a stringing machine to restring tennis rackets with broken strings.

People can play music for many years, and not know how it all fits together - that's where theory comes in!! I'm passionate about sharing the joy of learning music theory and will help to apply it to whatever instrument you are learning. Come see what's so fun about understanding music!!

About Regina
I was inspired to play the violin after seeing the local middle school orchestra perform when I was 8 years old. Since beginning group violin lessons the following school year, I have been consistently involved in developing my passion for and involvement in music in versatile ways -participating in many classical orchestras and ensembles, interning at 91X radio station during college,
and performing as a session musician and live string performer in the San Diego music scene.

In 2010, I graduated Cum Laude with a B.A. in Music and a minor in Pre-Therapeutic Psychology from Point Loma Nazarene University. In addition to teaching lessons, I play for weddings, parties, and other events, and can be found rocking out on stage in acoustic world punk band QUEL BORDEL!

I teach from more traditional methods and use my personal history to p
rovide a well-rounded learning experience. I enjoy sharing the beauty and creativity of classical music, Irish/world music, hymns/religious pieces, as well as contemporary songs.

My approach to teaching is very holistic, helping to create for each of student a solid foundation of music theory, history, note-reading, and technique while also exposing them to a variety of pieces and genres so they can be better prepared to explore what most interests them.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Keyboard, music stand, tuner, metronome, flashcards, etudes and exercises, various sheet music, etc.

I've taught music theory classes and privately for 20 yrs. I can help you to read music and improve your rhythm. I can also assist in A.P. music theory.
I use Julie Johnson's Guide to A.P Music Theory and The FJH Note Speller.

Students find that in a few short weeks they are improving in Music Theory classes and chorus/choir music is much easier to read.
It's fun when it's laid out easily.

About Carol
I've sung most of my life. I've been teaching since 1991. I listen to a lot of different singers but my real passion is jazz, Brazilian music and blues. I've performed in the US as well as England and Scotland. I also have recorded 2 Cd's.

I teach many different styles of music and work with beginners to advanced. My teaching studio is equipped with a P.A. system so that students can also work on their performance skills.

What's the first lesson like? When I first meet a new student I ask about what experience they've had singing. Even beginners sing in the shower or along with their favorite songs.

Finding out what kind of music the student listens to and wants to sing is also a big part of the first lesson. I find that it's more motivating and fun to work on songs that the student enjoys.

It's good for me to know if th
ey feel strain, tension or raspiness. I explain a little about how the vocal cords work, visualizing or picturing the action of the vocal cords and the muscles that work with them.

I encourage students to find their own images that they can relate to. We work on breathing, increasing range and power through vocal exercises. I have pre-recorded exercises for the student to work on during the week.

Working on songs is equally important. Knowing how to get the sound that is uniquely your own and expressing yourself without strain or damage to the vocal cords.

Do any of the following things interest you? Increased range and power, ear training, song writing, breath management, music theory, or improved performance skills? Try a lesson. It's rewarding and fun!

*** Lesson Details ***
I have a warm down to earth approach to voice lessons. I'm laid back and very patient. This doesn't mean that I'm not demanding of my students. I'll help you find the best way to find practice time and enjoy the journey. In a few weeks you'll notice an easier time hitting those higher notes. In a few months you'll be singing songs with more freedom. You'll learn breathing, tone quality, how to increase range and power. We'll also work on performance and making a song all your own.

*** Studio Equipment ***
PA system for singing on mic. Recording lessons or songs is also possible. As of July 2017 video will be available.

*** Specialties ***
music theory, voice, singing, speaking, beginning piano, performance skills
I specialize in jazz though I don't have much call for that. I'm good with most styles except Rap & Opera.
I am a believer in Speech Level singing. I combine methods of Caesari and the methods that both Musician Institute & Los Angeles Music Academy use.

Carol is a pro and taking lessons from her has been one of the single best decisions I've made in a very long time. I love singing and she reminds me of that when I feel like I'm not that great at it. She has helped me to improve and to believe in myself and while lessons are structured she has the instinct of an artist to lift your spirits when that is what is lacking. There is something really special about a teacher who is coaching your spirit as well as your talent. I used to have a life coach but turns out Carol is that too. I recommend her highly.

Lessons in music theory are available to help both beginners and intermediate students have a better understanding of how chords, chord voicings, scales, modes, and keys come into play for guitar players.

About Aldo
Aldo is a San Diego native with over 9 years of professional performing, and teaching experience. His musical path started at a young age in middle school and was initially self-taught on guitar. Throughout his early years he learned as much as he could on his own to be able to perform and did so and began performing in bands at the age of 18. Once he began his performing career, he also began studying music at Mesa College. During his years in school, he studied Music Theory as well as Classical Guitar under the guidance of George Svoboda and Jude Weirmier. As he was studying music and performing, he wanted to pass on his knowledge to others to help prepare others for the "real world" of musicianship. Aldo started his teaching career at Music Central at the age of 20 and was offering lessons to students of all ages, from beginners to ear
ly intermediate. To this day, Aldo continues to perform locally around San Diego in several bands as well as he runs his own independent record label to help promote other local musicians. He has never stopped teaching throughout the years as it is has been and always will be a true passion for him. Aldo is completely immersed in music on a daily basis by being an active musician, teacher, mentor, and overall lover of music. Aldo's knowledge of guitar touches every genre and style imaginable, from Bach to rock, jazz, metal, you name it! His goal is make you succeed and excel at your instrument. In his spare time, Aldo enjoys skateboarding.

*** Lesson Details ***
My lesson plan is very simple. First of all, it revolves all around you and what you want to do with guitar. It doesn't matter if you want to master your skills before you hit the recording studio, prepare for the stage, learn the song you have always wanted to play, or just learn the instrument because it has always been your dream. I can help you. My approach is very relaxed and encouraging and I will always provide feedback to make sure you are going to hit your goals. After determining your goals, I will cater your lessons to help you reach them. Students who would like to read music will go through method books and supplemental material. Those who would like to start playing right away will start off with chords, understanding charts, counting rhythm, learning tablature, and reading simple sheet music. Intermediate to advance students can expect to focus on areas where they need help. New techniques can introduced or improved such as sweep arpeggios, tapping, speed picking, and performance tips. For Classical Guitar, I can help students from a beginning level to an early intermediate level. I will help them work on their sight reading and technique along the way. My classical guitar lessons will have a strong emphasis on the performance of the pieces assigned.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Aldo's studio is fully equipped with practice and performance amplifiers. A spare electric guitar is available for students if they happen to forget theirs. Recording equipment, drums, bass guitar, and bass amp is also available for accompaniment. Repair and maintenance tools are also available for quick adjustments or restringing a guitar.

*** Specialties ***
rock, pop, blues, metal, classical, speed picking, finger picking

Aldo is the best guitar instructor I have ever had

Now granted, I haven't had too many. Half a dozen at most. But let's be real, here. Most guitar instructors are terrible. They don't have any kind of cohesive lesson plan, or they show up to the lesson high, or they spend the whole half hour "showing you what you will eventually be able to do" by jamming on their own, while you watch.

Not Aldo.

Aldo is like the quintessential guitar instructor. He shows up on time. He has lessons prepped, including printed AND digital sheet music (courtesy of an excellent iPad app). He carefully monitors your progress and updates the lesson plan accordingly.

But my absolute favorite thing about taking guitar lessons from Aldo is that he teaches you EVERYTHING. Technique, Chops, Chords, Music Theory, Improvisation, he knows it all. Also, literally any song you bring in to him, asking him to learn how to play, he will be able to learn in 5 minutes flat and teach you, at least the basics, in half an hour.

I was a student of Aldo's for 2 years, and in that time my skill as guitarist grew by leaps and bounds, and I looked forward to Thursdays at 5:30 more than any other time of the week. I seriously cannot recommend him enough, and I hope you get to take a lesson from him soon.

Learn chord building, scales, harmony and form. Improve your understanding of what is happening during a chord progression and how particular chords work together in a particular key.

About Edward
Edward first became fascinated with the guitar at the age of fifteen. Before long he was putting bands together and looking for gigs. As time went on, his influences grew to include everything from classical to hip-hop to pop, but the one genre that that made the strongest impact was flamenco.
His passion led him to Spain where, after subsequent trips, he studied with some of the greatest guitarists in the business including David Serva, Emilio Maya, Paco Cortes and Rafael Santiago “Habichuela”. Between trips Edward studied classical guitar at Grossmont College and San Diego State University, where he received his bachelor’s degree in music performance in 2008.
Today Edward regularly performs as a soloist and with various ensembles ranging from pop groups to flamenco troupes. His comprehensive studies in music history and theory coup
led with one-on-one, ‘old world’ style lessons from flamenco masters gives him a great foundation for teaching.

I never picked up a guitar until after age 50, and then for some unknown reason decided I wanted to learn flamenco guitar.

I've been taking lessons with Ed for about 8 months.

Ed is teaching the flamenco basics and techniques, and also makes sure he adds in some easier items so that I can see progress. The lessons are comfortable - Ed has an easy going personality that makes the lessons comfortable and enjoyable.

Very pleased with Ed as my instructor

Niki is an outstanding piano teacher. She began teaching my daughter when she was 9 years old, and after 3 years of lessons, I am extremely pleased with how well my daughter plays the piano. Niki makes learning piano fun and interesting for children by allowing them to choose some of their own popular pieces. Her teaching style is the perfect balance of friendly and encouraging, yet very professional with an emphasis on progress. She sets high expectations and inspires her students through her own love of music. I would highly recommend Niki to any student fortunate enough to work with her.

While many piano instructors teach children, I had difficulty finding someone willing to have me (an adult) as a student. I tried two different teachers before finally hearing about Niki . Her lessons focus on the basics (like scales and lessons from technique books), as well as songs. She breaks the songs into manageable portions, so I am never overwhelmed and notice my progress from week to week. Her approach works. I am getting better at reading notes and I think I sound better too. I highly recommend Niki to anyone, at any age, who needs a piano teacher.

Music theory is one of my favorite subjects! So important for really understanding the music we play.

About Clarissa
Hi, thanks for checking out my profile! My name is Clarissa Lee and I've been teaching piano for 14 years. I'm an active member of the Music Teachers Association of California. I am committed to providing professional, well-rounded music instruction. My goal is to provide a comfortable environment for you to learn and enjoy music!

I provide a combination of repertoire, theory, sight reading, and ear training appropriate to your level. My piano studio is very fun, with plenty of games and learning incentives. Students are given many performance opportunities.

I expect each student to practice consistently each week. I believe that training in classical music is essential to build quality musicians. The core repertoire will be from the great classical composers, but I always add kid-friendly music to the assignment, whether it’s the
James Bond theme or Star Wars.

Easy to talk to, always professional and ready to go when we show up, very patient with my daughter who is not a "natural" at piano. I'd definitely recommend her.
