About Mandy
I have been singing for as long as I can remember and started studying voice at age 15. I sang in my first band when I was in high school, then 2 others while in college. Professionally, I was a back-up vocalist and percussionist with the Sam Morrison Band from 2006-2012, where I traveled all over the country. This premiere Bob Seger tribute band is signed by Titan Tribute Media and has recorded 3 albums that can be found on iTunes.

I left home to study music at Cal State, Long Beach. There, I was challenged with more difficult subjects, like opera and Lieder. My appetite continued to grow as I immersed myself in performances, competitions, and traveling the world with college choirs.

I have worked in opera companies based in southern California, including Lyric Opera of Los Angeles, Long Beach Opera, and Celestial Opera. I hav
e also been hired as a soloist at various local churches.

I was a faculty member at Orange County School of the Arts, for almost a decade, where I taught Music Theory, Music History, and Musicianship.

As a member of Belle Musique, a hand bell trio, I played and sung for weddings, funerals, and private parties.

I got to wail as the lead singer of Pine Street Band singing classic covers from CCR to Blondie to Tom Petty.

In addition, I sing and play in a band, Wheel House, where we create a unique blend of rock, blues, and funk.

It is my belief that it is never too late to follow your passion, but you have to find what really makes you happy and fulfilled!

*** Lesson Details ***
I teach students according to their own goals and interests. However, I must include elements that are vital in the musical world whether the student is a hobbyist or leaning toward a professional career. My instrumentalists will learn all aspects of theory including rhythm, basic theory, and musicianship. My singers will learn about breath, anatomy, alignment, and performance. This is in addition to learning fundamental repertoire.

I have very high expectations for my students and do my best to motivate and challenge them, bringing out the natural musician. I am goofy but demanding and always develop a strong and trusting relationship with each and every student.

*** Studio Equipment ***
In home music studio with upright piano, electric piano, recording equipment, drum set, amps, guitars, bass, and seating for parents.

*** Specialties ***

About Kristen
My name is Kristen K. and I am an accomplished violinist and teacher from Lexington, Kentucky. I began my musical studies at age 7 and quickly discovered my passion and love for music. As a young musician, I attended numerous summer music festivals, participated in the Central Kentucky Youth Orchestra. I was a winner of two concerto competitions, which gave me the opportunity to perform solos with the youth orchestra. I continued my studies at the University of Kentucky as a Violin Performance major and it was there that I discovered my love for teaching music! After completing my performance degree, I decided to also pursue a Bachelor’s in Music Education. During my college career, I served as a teaching assistant in the University of Kentucky String Project, I taught group and private lessons at several local middle and high schools, an
d also maintained my own private violin and viola studio. I was also awarded the McCracken Scholarship Award for Excellence in Music Education. The most rewarding part of teaching has been seeing my students continually improve and reach their goals!

In addition to teaching, I also am an avid performer. I have been a member of the Lexington Philharmonic Orchestra for 7 years and was a member of the University of Kentucky Symphony Orchestra. I perform as a soloist, in chamber groups, and in orchestras regularly at various events and concerts. In the past few years I have attended international chamber music festivals in Prague, Czech Republic and in Lucca, Italy. I have also had the opportunity to perform with some of the world’s most renowned musicians including Itzhak Perlman, Midori, and Gil Shaham in additional to performing in the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. and in Carnegie Hall in New York City. Studying music has provided me with many wonderful opportunities to learn and to grow. It is my goal to help students really love and enjoy playing music and develop the skills that allow us to share the magic of beautiful sound. Maintaining a high level of mastery as well as continuing to learn about the art of teaching are fundamentally equal and of highest priority for me. Through teaching music, I hope to inspire students and help them reach their potential.

*** Lesson Details ***
My teaching style is relaxed and understanding of where each student is at, while always maintaining a quick pace for learning new skills and always expecting the student to put forth their best effort. I am very encouraging and positive. I work with each student and his or her parents to determine short and long term goals and try to best provide the materials, instruction and motivation to achieve those goals!

*** Studio Equipment ***
Lessons in the living room, well lit, piano, music stands

*** Specialties ***
I specialize in teaching classical music but I also teach bluegrass and fiddle. I particularly like the Suzuki Method for beginning to intermediate students, but when they become more advanced I begin to incorporate concertos and sonatas.

About David
Hi there, and thanks for viewing my TakeLessons profile! I am excited to be a part of the team in Berkeley, CA.

I started teaching lessons while in music school for Classical Guitar in 1996. From 1998 onwards, I played with a variety of musicians from Africa and Latin America, as well the as great American traditions of gospel, funk, jazz, and bluegrass. All the while, I continued to study music theory and composition, on my own and in private lessons with both well-known players and local professionals. Flamenco and Indian Classical music have also been great interests which I am still involved with.

Though guitar is generally my "go-to" instrument, I often use a MIDI keyboard for composition, and studied/performed on bass for 10 years. The last few years, I have begun to develop my voice as well.

Since 2006, I have been teachi
ng music theory and composition at Ex’pression College in Emeryville. This is a digital production environment for the arts, and my students come from a variety of backgrounds. Some are musicians/aspiring musicians, and some are primarily interested in working with technology; but all are audio enthusiasts and love music!

*** Lesson Details ***
Whether you are a complete beginner or have been playing gigs for years, are very young or old, I have something to offer you!

How we structure lessons depends in part on you and your goals, as well as your learning style. Having taught music for over 15 years, I have a large amount of resources at my disposal, and can either teach from a method book, or a variety of materials, some of which are my own creations.

I also like to use technology as a teaching aid, and can show you how to use your own computer, keyboard, or music production application (garageband, etc) to practice and create music at home. Another thing that I offer is to make recordings of key parts of the lesson, either as an audio or video file, or both. These can be shared with you through email, dropbox, or a flash drive if you bring one along to your lesson.

Please contact TakeLessons if you have any further questions! I look forward to meeting and working with you or your child.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Home studio: Front room with computer station, guitars, music stand. Waiting area with couches and table, and parents can sit in on lessons. Street parking available, no pets.

College: practice rooms and classrooms available with computers and MIDI controllers.

*** Specialties ***
On guitar and bass, I have experience in world music including Africa, Latin America, and Flamenco. I also love American traditional music, including funk, jazz, rock, and gospel. I specialize in teaching music theory and composition, no matter what instrument. Rhythmic concepts applied to any instrument are a favorite topic.

If I could give 4.5 stars I would, the only reason it's not 5 stars is because I think nobody is perfect, but David is very close to it. I really liked how patient David was with Eli and his deep knowledge of music was very impressive. David is able to prevent things in a number of different ways and he makes sure that you understand that material very well.

David is awesome! I began lessons with him because i was not satisfied with the music theory classes at the school i am enrolled in, as well as the classes did not accommodate well to my learning differences. David not only has endless knowledge of music theory but also has shown me tools and helpful methods for studying music. I highly recommend taking lessons from David if you are either a beginner or you are at a higher level and would like to expand your knowledge of music theory.

About Greg
I started playing guitar in the 5th grade and in middle school began playing in rock groups. At the beginning of high school, I started teaching in some of the local music stores in the area. While wanting more from my playing, I started classical guitar lessons with an Andre Segovia student, Rani Cochran, and soon started lessons from Warren Nunes, a top jazz guitarist in the Bay Area. While continuing to take lessons in both types of music, I majored in Music at the local college. There I played in the jazz band and in guitar ensembles. After receiving my A.A. degree, I took classical guitar lessons with Larry Ferrara at the Conservatory of Music in San Francisco. At this point I transferred to San Jose State University and received a B.A. in guitar performance and a B.A. in Psychology, graduating with honors. My latest performing exp
erience has been playing in the worship band at my church for the past several years. I enjoy teaching guitar and sharing what I’ve learned over the years of playing. We all never stop being students and learning new things on our instrument.

*** Lesson Details ***
Lessons are provided in a comfortable, fun environment and are private and on a weekly basis. Initially the student will complete a questionnaire before the first lesson to allow me to better understand what experiences the student has had with the guitar and with music in general. Additionally, I try to find out what groups and guitarists he or she likes. Finally, discuss what goals the student has or put another way, what he or she wants to do with the guitar. When we have completed the first lesson, I will better understand what the student’s playing level is and be able to provide a lesson plan based on that level and current experience. The lessons are tailored to each student’s capability and desire to play/practice. The lessons will be challenging but not “out of reach”. The student will feel successful and see the difference in playing within a relatively short time.

I will assess the student’s progress each week, by reviewing the previous week’s work. Based on the student’s progress, I will advance to new material or stay within the same material. The student and I will agree on how much time the student will devote to practicing each week. The student will keep a three ring notebook for adding handouts as they are given. I usually use a guitar book, to have structure, along with supplementary material that fills in the gaps. It is vital to practice on a regular basis in order to improve.
I provide teaching with patience and motivation. Being a parent of a child with ADHD (I homeschooled for one year), I incorporate learning from my parental experiences into lessons as needed. There have been several studies done that show how early music lessons have longtime benefits.

*** Studio Equipment ***
The studio lessons are taught in a music room upstairs with large windows facing the street with guitars, amps, a computer, stereo and seating. The house has 3 cats which are kept separate from lessons. Street parking and/or driveway if needed.

*** Specialties ***
I've taught rock, blues, jazz, classical, contemporary Christian, and music theory. I try to get my students to play along with CD's and listen to others playing what they want to learn. I draw material from the hundreds of books I have collected over the years.

About Shana
Singer. Songwriter. Performer. Musician.
2015 Jazz Search West Winner. Former cast member of Fix My Choir on the Oxygen Channel. Up and coming Bay Area Artist. Read more..

Carrying a tune with angelic excellence. Conveying emotion through song and stage presence. Captivating an audience. For singer, songwriter and performer Shana Dinha it all began with "Phantom of the Opera."

An Assyrian-American born into a musical family, Shana’s musician family took her to see the play in London when she was 5 years old. It moved her. It inspired her. And she couldn’t stop singing once it ended – which turned out to be a good thing.

"When I don’t sing I’m not myself," she says.

Shana’s identity is a passionate artist, one who grew up invested in her craft. Unlike Phantom’s lead character she didn’t disappear in the face of the personal
and professional challenges that came along with it. She revealed herself, embraced the spotlight, and used her talent, her faith, and the love in her heart to achieve award-winning acclaim.

In 2008 Shana was awarded The Superior Command Solo Performance from California Music Education Association. A year later she claimed an Outstanding Vocalist Award from Music in the Parks & toping it with another Superior Command Solo Performance from California Music Education Association in 2010. Then in 2015 following a turn on Oxygen reality television series "Fix My Choir," she melodically belted her way to victory at world-renowned jazz club Yoshi’s, winning the competition, Jazz Search West. Possessing the ear-catching ability to skillfully sing gospel and R&B as well as jazz, Shana’s gift is destined to keep on giving.

Born in Dallas, Texas and raised in Pleasanton, California, Shana’s desire to sing was encouraged by her parents. "They gave me every opportunity for music lessons and also put me in choirs, she recalls. Shana was introduced to gospel by singing in urban choirs, though she gravitated toward R&B and jazz. Unfortunately those genres weren’t the only things she became attracted to.

After high school Shana attended DeAnza College. It took her 4 years to finish a 2-year program and receive her Associate of Arts in Social and Behavioral Sciences. It was delayed by a run of self-sabotaging life choices. I wasn’t loving myself very much," she admits. "I was in a hole. I was dealing with depression."

Concerned for both her well-being and the future of her potential music career, Shana decided continuing her education was the key to her survival. With her life on track she pursued and was offered a scholarship to attend Musicians Institute in Hollywood. Her parents, however, were concerned she’d regress in that environment. Shana would find herself having a literal come to Jesus moment.

"I realized the best thing I could do in that moment was to go and find a gospel choir just to sing in church, she says.

Once Shana found a church choir to join she asked its director if they knew of any professional choirs. Shana was recommended to JaRon Thompson who is the cousin of Terrance Kelly, Artistic Director of Oakland Interfaith Gospel Choir. This opportunity led to Shana working with a group called "Flow" that was managed by award-winning singer, composer, and Recording Academy member Nona Brown.

"Right away I got a gig singing backup with Josh Groban in front of 18,000 people," she says. "I felt an extreme amount of bliss I’d never felt before! I felt right at home. I felt at peace. It was like this is what I’m meant to do. That was a pivotal point in my life where music changed everything for me.

Although Shana feels no other music reaches the richness of jazz, she considers herself a well-rounded performer capable of singing various styles. Music and singing are part of her nature, something that’s carved into her heart and soul.

Shana says, "The only thing better than singing is more singing."

Last year my son expressed a strong desire to join his school's orchestra as a violinist that sparked our search for a violin teacher for him. We are so glad to have found Honor. She is a talented musician, and is engaging and patient when teaching my son. For a violin newbie, my wife and I were really happy to see my son setting a big challenge for himself and wanted to support his musical endeavor. For the past 9 months, he has steadily getting better with his violin playing techniques. As with any instruments, practice is key to getting better. Honor left my son clear instructions on what he needed to practice between lessons and let us know of her lesson plans. Now it's a pleasure to listen to him practice; no more cringing like in the early days. :) We are confident he has a very good chance of joining his school's orchestra in the coming year.

Honor is always punctual to the lessons. When there was any unexpected delay, she always texted us and kept us informed. She has been really accommodating to my son's school and after-school schedules. We highly recommend Honor to any parents seeking music lessons for their sons/daughters.

Honor is awesome. Out of the blue, my 8 year old son asked for violin lessons. I have never been very musical so I wasn't sure where to start. I looked at a few programs in my area but it nothing seemed like the right fit for us. I wanted someone who could nurture my son's new found love of the violin but not overwhelm him. I was getting a bit discouraged when I found Honor's profile on TakeLessons; she was the exact person I was looking for. In fact, I signed myself up for lessons too - you are never to old to learn something new. Our lessons have been great. My son is so much more comfortable having them at home. They are fun and challenging. My son is so excited I never have to remind him to practice - we love practicing together. We look forward to seeing Honor every week.
