I teach all levels of Music Theory. My teaching includes basic musical terms and symbol recognition, staff, notes, and pitches names, ear training, note values, time signatures, rhythm, repeat signs and first and second endings, dynamics, D.C. D,S, Coda and Fine, accidentals (flats and sharps), chord progressions, Circle of Fifths, roman numeral chord analysis, and basic composition.

About Karen
Karen R. was born and raised in a musical family in Lindstrom, Minnesota. Karen has loved to sing and play instruments almost all of her life, and became passionate about music early in her childhood. She has played 7 instruments proficiently including piano, bass guitar, acoustic guitar, ukulele, trombone, recorder, and voice (also an instrument). As a child, Karen took private instruction in piano and classical guitar. She sang and played guitar in her first band in the fifth grade! In high school she played trombone in band, bass guitar in stage band, and sang in the high school choir and stage chorus. In high school, she also sang and played acoustic and bass guitar in a rock band called the 6 pack, who performed for school dances and community events. Karen was also the singer and guitarist, leading the Young Life group. Even though
Karen has had training in many instruments, she has had the most training in voice.

As an adult, Karen has sung extensively in church choirs, women's ensembles, and has been a featured vocal soloist at church services, Christian retreats, and women's ministry events. She was extensively involved in vocal music at Grace Community Christian Church, where she was the singer and guitarist leading and teaching songs to women Bible study groups, preschoolers at vacation Bible school, and Kids Praise Club for elementary aged children. For Kids Praise Club, she also taught the children the choreography for the performances. Presently, Karen is a Choir Director for the K-6 Choristers group at First Presbyterian Church (FPC) in Mesa, AZ., and also taught singing and choreography to the children at VBS at FPC. Karen also had a main roles as Mrs. Paroo in The Music Man in April of 2013, and Mrs. Bucket in Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory in April, 2014, The Jailer's Daughter in Wind in the Willows, and Mrs. Brill in Mary Poppins, Mrs. Darling and a Pirate in Peter Pan, performed by the First Players at FPC. Additionally. Karen is presently a substitute elementary school and music teacher at Grace Christian Academy, Bethany Christian School, and teaches General Music K-12 at Young Disciples Christian Academy part-time.

During Karen's college career, she was a voice major at Mesa Community College (MCC) and Grand Canyon University (GCU). At MCC, she performed in the Sun Valley Chorale (SVC) and Cadence women vocal jazz ensemble. SVC performed classical songs at the Mesa Arts Center, and Cadence performed jazz songs for MCC events. Karen was also involved in musical theater at MCC. Karen was an opera singer at Night at the Opera, and a Broadway singer at Broadway Bound, both at MCC. At GCU, Karen has been in the President Singers, Canyon Singers, Canyon Chorale, and Union Choirs. Canyon Singers were the honor students and ambassadors for GCU who traveled locally and out of state to recruit students for GCU. As a voice major, Karen has had 9 semesters (4 ½ years) of private voice instruction under the tuteladge of Dr. Cathy Hauan at MCC, and Dr. Sheila Corley at GCU. Karen has three degrees from GCU: A Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education with a Minor in Music, a Master's of Education in Reading and Curriculum, and a Bachelor of Arts in Music Education. Music is Karens passion and she desires to teach it to all ages and stages of people. Music is the universal language and creates joy and healing in the soul.

Presently, Karen owns her own home music studio called Starshine School of Music in which she teaches piano, voice, and guitar. Karen also teaches Take Lessons music students (an online music student placement company) piano, voice, and guitar in her home. Karen is also an active Mary Kay Consultant.

Karen's teaching style is very patient, nurturing, encouraging, and fun-loving. Karen is a teacher who sets loving but firm boundaries and guidelines. She implements structure and organization, but is not overly strict and harsh. She believes in encouraging, loving, and imparting knowledge with her students so that they will maximize their potentiality and their inner musical stars will shine.
Karen teaches piano, voice, guitar, and music theory for beginning through intermediate (for voice she teaches beginning through advanced). The curriculum that Karen uses is varied according to the student's personality and learning level. She uses her vast knowledge and information from her education and past experiences, and also Alfred Essentials of Music Theory, Alfred's Instructional books, Hal Leonard Pro-vocal Series, Faber Piano Adventures for all levels, and other resources. She also uses an assignment lesson plan book so that each student will know her clear objectives, what is expected of them and so that communication is established with the student's parents if the student is under 18. Additionally, Karen uses incentives, a point system, and rewards for self-discipline, consistent practicing, musical accomplishment and growth, and a good attitude.
Karen's students learn and perform remarkably well because of her very loving, organized, and comprehensive teaching style. They progress in amazing ways on a weekly and monthly basis. They look forward to coming to their lessons because they are treated with such respect and care. They know that Karen has such a passion and love for music, which is so contagious and is passed on to them. Teaching drums professionally since 1998, Aaron has influenced hundreds of budding musicians to get the most from their instrument. He has studied privately with Rob Laytham (Modern Drummer columnist), Joe Leroux (marching band guru), Gary Chaffe (legendary drummer) and many others throughout the years. He has taken the best techniques and teaching styles from his influences and molded them together to form what he considers to be the most effective and inspiring method available.

I teach drum set in nearly every style and hybrid imaginable, as well as percussion and drum circle facilitation.

Accomplishments include recording 7 albums with various groups, touring with national acts across the west coast, drumming for the Warner Brothers Television house band, and still actively playing live shows and recording.

I put my focus on inspiring students to explore their own creativity with the tools and techniques that I give to them and nurture. I think it is very important to cover the basic skills that the school districts expect from their music students (sight reading, proper technique, note recognition, rudiments, timing, feel, etc.). I also feel it is important for a student to find his or her style and an ability to use the fundamentals to create music that they enjoy. He has written a method book based on the fundamentals of playing a rhythmic instrument with an emphasis on allowing the student to find their niche and lead a group through a piece of music or tastefully support it.

My studios are fully equipped with sound systems, the latest recording gear, acoustic and electric sets, hand drums and dozens of other percussion instruments. I believe that the more resources a person can draw from, be it intellectual or physical, the more fulfilling the learning experience will be.

Each lesson, my students will take at least a page of music that represents the concept that they are focusing on, and a goal set to accomplish by the end of the week so that they can build upon what they already know in an effort to put the big picture together. Ultimately the student will learn when and how to utilize the concepts that they are practicing.

*** Studio Equipment ***
A Yamaha electronic drum set in my Mesa Studio allows me to control volume and dial up any sound imaginable. I have full acoustic drum sets in other studios that I use for recording and private lessons. Often I will integrate guitar, keyboard, or other instruments in to the lessons if needed.

Sticks, Practice Pad, tuning kit, binder and books with teaching supplements.

My name is Andrew, and I've been a musician nearly my entire life. I have a Bachelor's degree in classical guitar performance from Arizona State University, but my background goes far beyond classical music. My performance experiences range from playing violin in my high school symphony orchestra to playing lead guitar in a Santana cover band, and just about everything in between! While I do expect students to practice consistently, I always do my best to tailor the lesson plans to their wants as well as their needs so practice is both fun and challenging. For students pursuing classical music, I'll typically start them in a book an
d reading sheet music, but for just about anything else, the lesson plans will be more customized to the taste of my students and will not require music reading ability in most cases. After the first few months, my students can expect to have a solid understanding of music, their instrument, and what steps to take to reach their long term goals.

My 6 yr old son started taking lessons with Ginni about a month ago. He is a very active boy who has difficulty sitting still and focusing. Ginni is wonderful with him! She is very patient, kind, and understanding of children's specific challenges. She works with him while gently nudging him to stay on task. He actually really likes going to piano lessons and is always excited when 'piano day' rolls around. So hats off to Ginni for her skills in making learning music fun and enjoyable to an active little boy! I always wanted my son to learn an instrument (we are a family of musicians) but what I didn't realize is the process learning piano is helping him with needed skills in school: concentration, focus and discipline. I am very happy I chose Ginni.

Music has been my passion for the past 18 years. I started piano when I was 5 yrs old and the violin when I was 7 yrs old. I continued with lessons until I entered the Detroit High School for Performing Arts. During my sophomore year, I took additional classes at Wayne Sate University for music theory and in my senior year I took on my first piano students. I have been teaching piano, violin and music theory ever since. I have also choreographed and taught dance for many years as dancing has been with me since my first lessons at 4 yrs old. My focus is in ballet, tap and jazz. I am a graduate from Eastern Michigan University where I was actively a part of the music and dance program.

I remember my piano teacher and I try to keep her balance of fun and learning. I am a very fun teacher, but I do expect my stu
dents to work, and learn. I introduce learning games and have contests. I also regularly quiz my students. For the younger students I like to inform the parents about what they should be practicing and of any theory exercises they may have for the week. Music is a rewarding and enjoyable passion that I try to pass on to my students.

When did you begin playing [instrument], and why?:

I've been singing since I was about 8. I began to play piano when I was a teenager, because many of my classmates were very skilled at the piano, and I became inspired to be like them.

What are your personal goals as a musician?:

I love opera, and my goal is to compose my own. I plan on working closely with the librettist, since I'm a poet as well.

Do you have a memory of a time when a musical concept or technique really clicked? Something you'll remember forever?:

I never knew what perfect pitch was until I was much older. I also didn't realize I had perfect pitch until a professor at an audition made me aware of my ability. Since then, it's become a wonderful tool.

What is your favorite piece of advice from one of your past (or current) teachers?:

Being compassion
ate with a student will allow them to fearlessly open up to their potentials.

What was your most challenging moment learning an instrument?:

In the winter months, my body feels tight and cold, and sometimes this causes tension during playing or singing. That's why to me it's important to work in a warm environment, do proper daily stretching, and have a healthy lifestyle (good diet, exercise, proper sleep).

What is your biggest musical achievement?:

Composing a fugue.

About Anabelle...

Anabelle has been involved with sounds and music from an early age. Her greatest forte is her hearing. When she was young, people thought she might become a voice actor, because her skill at replicating voices was quite apparent. Still, she loved to sing and had been regularly involved in choirs. She dabbled in violin in the fifth grade, but she didn't feel a "click." Without despairing, she tried her luck with piano and felt instantly in sync. She knew this was the right instrument for her. During her piano studies, she continued to work on her voice. In addition, she studied the workings of a sound board, and was head sound chief at her high school. At the college level, she began to pursue composition, while still continuing with piano and vocal studies. She holds an A.A. with a music focus (piano performance), a B.M. in music theory, and a M.M in music education from Boston University. She has been teaching music since 2006 and has worked with a wide range of ages and various group sizes. Her joy is working with people in a field that she is passionate about. Her interests include music (jazz, classical, opera, new age), ballet, composition, yoga, meditation, going to the gym, hiking and camping, scuba-diving, sailing,Traditional Chinese Medicine and acupuncture, cooking and baking, film-editing, sound engineering, poetry, reading good books, building websites, and watching documentaries.

WHO AM I?
I am Karen. I love Music! My family has always incorporated music into our lives. Some of my earliest memories are being danced around in my Mom’s arms and listening to her sing. I began formal lessons on the Piano when I was 7 years old. Growing up also I sang in the Church Choirs, played on Hand Bells, and explored the Flute. I spent a formal year each on Trumpet, Drums and Harpsichord and am currently working on learning Zither, Autoharp, Dulcimer, and Soprano & Alto Recorders, and sometimes the guitar (when I have a chance). Of course, I also regularly read and attend lectures, conferences, seminars and master classes to always improve my teaching skills. I have been teaching piano and music theory for over 31 years in this area and have played professionally. I am a member in good standing with the Music Teachers National Association (MTNA), and was with the California Association of Music Teachers (CAPMT), Empire Music Teachers Association (EMTA), the Music Educators National Conference (MENC), the Suzuki Association of North America, the National & the Inland Empire Kodaly-Orff Association, and the National Conference on Keyboard Pedagogy – I have not hooked up here yet. I am a fully certified and licensed teacher of Kindermusik and Musikgarten and have earned National Certification (NCTM) through the MTNA and have earned Level I & II (out of 3) in Orff-Scheulwerk. WHAT DO WE DO HERE?
I try hard to present students with a solid, broad based approach with an emphasis on understanding the fundamentals of musical comprehension, music reading, musical memory, and ear development. These are essential to playing and enjoyment of any instrument! To this end we cover theory, music history, performance, technique and practical application. These basics are supplemented and reinforced by the monthly group sessions, several annual field trips, access to regional, state and national music competitions and performances, as well as the formal Student Evaluations each Spring. I have a full music lab, an extensive library of music and music reference materials and up to date postings on local free or low cost musical events While I tend to emphasize classical music and technique, we will also cover a wide range of music in various meters and modalities: classical, popular and world music in solos and duets. Supplementary books are available: holiday, religious, popular, classical, music from specific times, places, composers, movies... or whatever the student wishes, when they are ready. My personal goal is not to have a studio full of competition performers. A few are always nice of course, but the average student just wants to be able to make music - to make it sing. I DO want them to understand, appreciate, and be able to pick up something and figure it out - or apply what they know to another instrument. Once music is part of a life, it never leaves; it is the one universal language.

Music theory lessons are perfect for those preparing to major in music, or for those who simply wish to improve their understanding of how music works. Lesson topics may include music fundamentals and notation, scales and modes, intervals and transposing, basic and extended harmonic materials, musical form and texture, counterpoint, harmonic progression, and 20th century techniques. Students will explore music history along the way by listening to and analyzing relevant examples from music literature. Students will also compose and learn basic keyboard technique as they progress in their theory knowledge.

About Kendra
Music lessons provided by Kendra C., Doctor of Musical Arts. Kendra has been teaching music to all ages for the past ten years in her own studio as well as in universities, arts academies, public and private schools, and summer camps. She graduated from Michigan State University in 2011 with a doctorate in Music Composition, and has had her original compositions performed by musicians in concerts and conferences around the world. Besides teaching, she has worked as pianist for ballet companies and as church pianist and keyboardist in both liturgical and contemporary services.
