I welcome any student wanting learn the  joys of playing brass instruments.  I have taught more than 500 students on a private level since I began teaching.

I like to teach based on the individual. I have taught group and private lessons. The materials I use are varied, with an emphasis on scales, theory, and also some duet playing. I also like to incorporate some music history into each lesson. I feel that each student needs to work from known to the new areas. I often use supplementary materials (solos or small ensembles) to reinforce my teaching.

Grant Reed  has the right combination in his approach to teaching: patience, enthusiasm, and the ability to analyze, troubleshoot, and motivate. He has had extensive training. He also has a lot of teaching and performing experience. Grant knows what works! His manner is calm and empathetic.

I am an expert on the fundamentals of low brass playing and will tailor lessons to meet your needs on learning the tuba. Beauty and richness of tone is always my first priority, as that truly allows us to achieve the music goals we are aiming for. 

Grant currently teaches trombone and low brass lessons at Music Center of the Northwest, privately in the Seattle area, and also coaches young low brass players at a number of schools through the Seattle Youth Symphony's Endangered Instruments Program (EIP). In addition to being a music educator, Grant is an active performer and has played with numerous orchestras across the country. He is a regular member of the trombone section of Symphony Tacoma, and has appeared as an extra musician on numerous occasions with the Seattle Symphony and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. I took guitar lessons (adult learner) with Jess for a few months over the summer of 2023. Sadly had to put lessons on hold because of schedule issues on my end. Jess was an excellent teacher with well demonstrated mastery of the material. I got to practice a lot of useful exercises that felt well paced for my learning level. The variety of the exercises never left me bored and gave me good practice with different topics, from rhythm to music theory. The studio space was very comfortable and welcoming

My Background

I've been playing with classical ensembles and rock bands since 2001. Even though I started on classical trombone and rock guitar, I have come to expand my repertoire to a variety of instruments and genres. During my time in college I performed with the University choir, orchestra, and band. I also have organized, wrote/arranged for, and performed with a variety of bands in my home state of New Mexico, as well as Japan, and the San Francisco Bay Area.


Since 2006 I have been an active teacher. This profession has taken me everywhere from working with classical guitar classes in New Mexico high schools to Elementary students in Japan to a variety of private students of various musical instruments and genres everywhere I've been. Since relocating to the Bay Area in 2010, I've had the pleasure of working with lots of great students from kids to adults with a wide range of ambitions. Since 2012 I've been running my own full time studio.


Philosophy of Learning

Lessons are generally designed to work towards giving students the tools to accomplish their goals and become increasingly independent over time. While all students will study similar fundamentals regarding technique, theory, and performance, every lesson is as different as every person. What kind of music do you want to make? I'll tell you what you need to do to get there, and help you take the steps to achieve your aspirations. It's really important to know though that everyone makes their own experience. The process of learning music involves you learning as much about your own mind and body as it does any external concepts, so please keep in mind only you can move yourself forward. 


I also love to help students put together a song, record, and produce it for them so that they can have a recording to share with their friends and family.


I also hold events for my students. (Check out our pictures and videos below!)
Younger students have opportunities to perform for friends and family at my studio every few months. Adult students also occasionally have events where they get a chance to get together and play music as well. 



Aside from in-studio lessons, students also have the option to sign up for online lessons via Zoom or the TakeLessons Classroom feature.

*Unfortunately due to scheduling issues, I'm not currently accepting students for bi-weekly lessons. I can do regular weekly lessons, or occasional drop-in lessons, but bi-weekly appointments make it really hard for me to give the best scheduled times to my existing weekly students. I'm sorry for the inconvenience.

Thanapol is originally from Bangkok, Thailand, studied euphonium with Mr. Thunyawat Thangtrakul at Chulalongkorn University in Music education major. Thanapol participated in many festivals and competitions, both band and solo, throughout his early years in Thailand. In 2017 Thanapol was given an opportunity to attend the University of Northern Colorado and held a very successful fundraising concert to help fund his travel and education. At the University of Northern Colorado,  where he studied euphonium with Dr. Nathaniel Wickham. Thanapol has had much success in festivals and competitions in the US including IET 2018, where he won second place in the artist division and more in solo competitions, during his time in the U.S. Thanapol graduated Master's degree in Music Performance at the University of Southern Mississippi, studied with. Dr. Richard Perry, with Graduate Assistantship. After the Master's program, Thanapol was working at Foxes Music Company in Falls Church, Virginia. His responsibility was Brass Specialist, Instruments Repair Assistant, Low Brass Instructor & Bookkeeper. Thanapol moved to New York City with his partner in May 2023. Thanapol is looking forward in start his Music career in New York City.

With over 15 years as a Tuba Player, over 20 as a Brass player, and almost a decade of teaching Tuba, James Browne has a versatile and expanding ability to teach both new and experienced players the ins and outs of this wonderful low brass instrument. 

James is a Graduate of Towson University and is a current Director of Bands. During his time at Towson University, Mr. James has played with the newly formed Symphonic Band under the direction of Brian Balmages, a successful composer and arranger. Mr. James has also had the amazing opportunity to play in the Wind Ensemble under the direction of Dr. Christopher Cicconi. During Mr. James's time at Towson University, Mr. James received extensive training in both Choral and Instrumental Instruction, along with countless hours of playing his primary instrument of Tuba. Mr. James's time at Towson University provided exponential educational growth, both as a learner and an educator.Prior to attending Towson University, Mr. James attended the College of Southern Maryland and earned an Associates degree in Secondary Education, Music, and General Studies. Mr. James played with Solid Brass, Souther Maryland Concert Band, and Ritmo Caché, and also was a Marching Band Staff Member.

First and most importantly, learning any instrument should be a fun experience! I believe the one thing that sets a great musician apart from a beginner is the confidence you possess. The focus of each lesson depends heavily on the level of each student... beginning students can expect a larger portion of the instruction to focus on fundamentals and music reading so as to lay a foundation for further success. For these students I will generally work out of an existing band method as these are more than adequate, and perhaps add a few supplemental materials which in include simple exercises specific to the instrument, scale patterns, and rhythm/music reading examples. 

More advanced students can expect to review proper technique and work on appropriate etudes and solo repertoire. I spend a lot of time working on practice technique. Confidence building if necessary. If the student plays in a jazz band we can work on bebop/swing/improvisation as well.

*** Studio Equipment ***
I have a stand, tuner, metronome, and video and audio recording devices should we decide to use them.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I can provide teaching materials and can bring a music stand. Student needs working instrument, and should own a tuner, metronome, and music stand. For a tuner/metronome I recommend a Korg TM-50. Nearly anything will do for a stand but I'd avoid a flimsy fold-up stand. I recommend an On-Stage SM7211. Can't go wrong with a Manhasset black stand either.

Tuba:
The largest and lowest-pitched musical instrument in the brass family. Like all brass instruments, sound is produced by moving air past the lips, causing them to vibrate or "buzz" into a large cupped mouthpiece. I begin teaching from the beginning with the very basics of breathing, embouchure,  fingerings, reading, notes, rhythms, songs, scales, theory and improvisation.

It is completely untrue that some people are "born to sing or play an instrument" while others are not. With my expertise a person who believes they have no talent can learn any instrument, the most "tone deaf" can learn to sing perfectly in tune, and someone who thinks they have "no talent" can become better than anyone out there. It all started out in a small town called Chatham, NJ where I spent the first thirteen years of my life. I remember loving music as early as I could walk and talk. I started taking guitar lessons when I was seven years old. Along with the guitar, came a love for singing and writing my own songs. When we moved to Pennsylvania the guitar came with me. Throughout my high school years, I spent hours playing with teachers, fellow students, and parties.

When I was sixteen every week for three years I would drive an hour into Philadelphia, by myself, to study with world-famous Artie Singer. His students include such names as Chubby Checker, Frankie Avalon, Al Martino, and Bobby Rydel. Artie co-wrote and produced two massive hit records “At the Hop” and “Rock ‘n Roll is Here to Stay,” both recorded by Danny and the Juniors. 

While going to a Community College in Philadelphia the music teacher there took notice of me, pulled me aside, and told me about a great music school I should attend. He then sent away the application and helped me fill it out. The next thing I knew I was in Boston attending Berklee School of Music! I graduated Magna Cum Laude with a degree in Jazz and Rock Composition, Arranging, and Guitar.

I had originally gone to Berklee intending to major in voice. However, I had no luck with the vocal department there and ended up with nodules on my vocal cords. The damage was so significant that I had to stop singing during my four years at Berklee and turned to study Guitar and Composition.

I tried every vocal teacher in town wanting more than anything to be a singer. What I found was no teacher could help me and it seemed obvious that even though they had the “big name” they didn't know what they wt. I was losing hope. The combination of this roadblock and my persistence led me to the greatest thing that ever happened in my life....... I met Dante Pavone!

I kept hearing about a singing teacher named Dante Pavone. Since I had already tried everyone else, I decided to give him a shot.
