Robert H.

Pikesville, MD

About Robert

Creativity, skill and love of music are the key elements that I work to encourage in every student. Over the years my teaching has evolved and I find it gratifying to take people far beyond their own expectations while helping them achieve their goals. I believe everyone is musical and just needs the right key to tap into their own creativity.

For beginners it's important to study with an excellent teacher. Setting a solid and creative foundation makes all the difference!
For advanced players studying with a great artist takes you greater artistry.

Weekly private lessons focus on te
chnical skills in either piano, voice (or a combination of both) and a strong musical foundation. Theory and Ear Training are fundamentals that are embedded in this approach to developing a complete musician and artist.

I have over 20 years experience working with students as young as 3 and old as 85! Often multiple generations in a family study together making for a rich family experience.

Performance opportunities: Recitals, Concerts Cabarets and Musicals are a part of developing into a musician and singer and enhancing a love of music that will last a lifetime!

*** Lesson Details ***
Piano - Classical, Jazz, Blues and Improvisation. Current students are beginners to professional musicians and music teachers.

Voice – I am an accomplished vocal coach and songwriter and currently work with a wide variety of singers from young beginners to professionals who look to develop through ear training, singing and songwriting. In a unique way I guide people to become better performers and musicians through the combination of voice, piano and composition.

I work with students as young as 3 or 4 and into their 80’s. It’s important to begin with an excellent teacher from the start to set a good foundation and to have the ability to develop as quickly and thoroughly as possible. I enjoy working with beginners as well as accomplished musicians. I also believe that music is one of the great joys of life and that lessons should be FUN!

Besides a wide variety of performance opportunities through my Family to Family Concerts, I also offer my students the curriculum and exams of the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music, a gold standard music curriculum.. The ABRSM is accredited in over 100 countries worldwide and exams are offered twice per year in all instruments and voice.

*** Studio Equipment ***

A message from Robert: Hello, I am a master teacher focusing on the classical repertoire along with a very creative approach to improvisation and composition. I help students to achieve their interests of music rather than focusing on teaching one particular method. Classes are tailored to the student and constantly evolving. This has led me to work in a variety of mediums and styles including Jazz, improvisation, rock and blues. This approach also enhances an understanding and love of classical music.
I also guide my students in the curriculum and exams of the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music. (ABRSM) Exams are offered twice per year.
I have also found it inspiring to work with people with disabilities and help them find a way to express themselves musically. I give lectures and workshops in the area and around the country on improvisation and creativity along with concerts of my own music.
I also work with a number of students in vocal coaching and accompanying.
New this year are seminars in songwriting for adults and children. Groups of 4-5 collaborate on new songs. Film and video composition coming soon!

Murray P.

Baltimore, MD

About Murray

My musical career started at age 3 when my parents placed a pair of drum sticks in my hands. I started playing drums in church and then progressed to play in middle school where I was part of the jazz band and orchestra. With some very early lessons, I begin to blossom into a skillful drummer. I then continued to play in bands in high school and, in addition, became a member of the Milford Mill Academy Marching Band. In my sophomore year, I became the section leader of the drum line where I played & mastered the snare drum. I have 2 degrees in music theory from Deer Park Magnet school and Morg
an State University. I have performed with many bands from all different musical genres such as gospel, funk, pop, jazz, blues, rock, Latin, reggae, and R&B. In 2004 I became the only drumming instructor at The Psalms of David School Of Music. In 2011 I started and became the principle of the New Antioch Baptist Church School of Music. I have recorded with a variety of musical artists and currently plays full time at the New Antioch Baptist Church of Randallstown. In 2012, I recorded my first DVD entitled, "P.'s Time 2 Groove". Throughout the last 24 years of my drumming career, I still have the passion and fun as if it were day 1. Within the last 14 years, I have taken that same passion for playing and have transferred that energy into all of my students. I welcome all students any age, any skill level. Hope to have you as a new student very soon!

*** Lesson Details ***
My students will quickly learn the basics of drumming, including: stick control, technique, rhythms, drum fills, and licks. It does not matter if you are a beginner, intermediate or advanced drummer. The same time and effort will be exercised. We will have a fun and meaningful time playing, both by ear and by reading music. These lessons will really be hands on using teaching methods such as music books, DVD’s, and playing of my own. Students will have a great time also studying music theory, learning how to assemble the drum set, learning the parts of the drums, how to tune the drums, and how to accompany other musical instruments. After 3 to 6 months taking lessons, all students will be well on their way to a very successful musical career having had such fun and learning to play all different styles of music. My motto: Lets play Good, get Better, and be our Best!

*** Studio Equipment ***
Finished basement: (2) drum sets, small studio, recording equipment, seating for students & guest.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I will bring snare and sticks. For the more advance lesson drum kit if one not provided. For the beginners sticks snare and if they already have a drum kit that is fine too.

*** Specialties ***
Gospel, Christan, jazz, blues, rock, R&B, pop, Latin, reggae, funk

This is only my 4th week and I have already decided to continue taking lessons from Murray. His skill, knowledge, teaching style, and enthusiasm has inspired me to practice for SEVERAL hours a week. Murray has not just simply gone through the lesson plan, but has given me some very good suggestions on how to practice more efficiently and gain comfort with new material. I see progress and I look forward to more in the upcoming months.

Nathan R.

Windsor Mill, MD

About Nathan

I have been teaching private lessons for close to 10 years and have been an active performer for even longer, playing in all different types of groups, from rock bands and jazz groups to orchestras and brass bands. I studied music at Frostburg State University (Bachelors) and the Peabody Conservatory (Masters). I can teach just about any age and skill level and cover anything you are interested in learning; whether its a certain style, genre, technique or song.

My lessons are laid back, with a focus on perfecting the basics. Most students work out of a method book a
ppropriate to their skill level. Aside from that we'll also spend time learning songs and pieces of the students choice. With the right amount of effort, you'll know your way around your instrument in no time at all

*** Travel Equipment ***
Will provide sheet music and exercises. My students should have a working instrument as well as any method book or sheet music we are working on.

*** Specialties ***
I teach all styles and genres

Jennifer P.

Gwynn Oak, MD

About Jennifer

I am a professional singer-songwriter and have been teaching lessons fulltime for the last 12 years. I teach students of all ages and levels of experience. My current range of students include: kids with learning/developmental disabilities, teenagers who have starred in school musicals, and performing adult singer-songwriters. Whatever your background or desire, I can help you to cultivate your unique musical potential, and to strengthen your creative voice.

As a professional vocalist and pianist, I have worked freelance, in a variety of settings, over the years--including solo, in wedd
ing bands, small jazz and rock/pop groups and with big bands. I have been singing with the Mood Swings Big Band for 6+ years. During that time, we have performed at the White House, the Chamber of Commerce and in Kennebunkport, Maine (at the Bush estate).

I also have an extensive professional and personal background in meditation (10 years), astrology (5 years) and healing (particularly Reiki, 4 years). I am very interested in the intersection between a healing/mindfulness-awareness approach and singing/playing piano.

Susan S.

Owings Mills, MD

About Susan

Acting – I have taught all kinds of acting, including Audition Skills, Shakespeare, Stage, Film & TV, Dramatic, Comedic, whatever. I also have quite a bit of experience performing in all those arenas.

Voice – Anyone can sing. I you want to and have always thought you couldn't, you will be delighted when I prove you wrong. If you're a serious singer, no matter what kind of singing you want to do, you should train classically. It's just the best way to train those delicate muscles.
I am an excellent coach, at any level. I will teach you how to OWN the song. That's what keeps people coming b
ack. However, as an instructor, I am better with beginners.

Speaking – Ever lost your voice because you were talking too much? Every professional speaker I know of has. YOU DON'T HAVE TO. It's simply a matter of knowing the correct way to produce the sound. That's easy for me to teach.

Writing – I have been a professional writer and editor for over eight years; I have books, articles, posts, newsletters, etc. published. The point of grammar is to facilitate communication, NOT to be right. I can teach you practical grammar, not just correct grammar. I can show you how to make your words flow and be easily read. If there are typos in here, please understand you should never proofread your own work.

Nutrition/Alternative Medicine – I have been in this field for over 25 years. I am certified as a Sports Massage Therapist and most of my experience is in that area, but over the years, I have garnered quite a bit of usable knowledge.

Meditation – There is no one right way to meditate. You don't even have to be still to meditate, although it's a good place to start. We'll find a way(s) that's right for you.
