Hello! My name is Karmyn and I am a professional singer/actress and vocal teacher/technician. In my journey to become a vocal artist, I had to discover the proper techniques to allow me to sing both classical and musical theatre. Being a professional vocalist, I had to find something that worked safely and effectively!

*** My Story ***

When I entered college in the 1993, I had high hopes for my voice. My usable range was quite large for my age: G3 to E6. During my collegiate training I began to notice problems: jaw pain that I had never had before, loss of breath control and forced high notes that used to feel so natural. Unfortunately, because of this training
, I left college with a shrunken range: A3 to Ab5, I had lost more than an octave as a result of poor training by a doctorate of music.

In 1995 I won Miss Louisiana (Miss America). I was blessed to received scholarship for the rest of school. One of the colleges that provided money was the University of Louisiana Monroe. I decided to take summer sessions with Dr. Weidman. He realized quite quickly that I had been given the wrong Fach and technique for my voice type and encouraged me to stop with my former teacher and give my voice a break. And I did.

In fact, I decided to focus on acting. The closest acting community was Dallas, Texas. There I was picked up by the Ivett Stone Agency and began booking national commercials, TV spots and films. Along the way I worked with Don Shook of the (then) Actors Company in Dallas, TX. Don listened to my vocal story and told me about his teacher, Bill Bauer.

Bill became my vocal mentor and saving grace. He taught me how to release the tension of poor training and build the technique that lasts a lifetime! I am forever in his debit as my Angel of Voice!

Along with his guidance and genius he helped developed a safe, powerful technique for all vocal genres. I’m so confident that this method will work that I can I guarantee your singing and/or speaking voice will be the best EVER!

In addition to Bill's technique, in 2005, I began incorporating the Gary Catona Method for both my speaking and singing students. It is a powerful Bel Canto vowel method that strengthens and heals all voice types!

Whether you are a beginner and want a solid technique, or you have experienced bad training and need to retrain, I guarantee this method will work for you!

*** How I Can Help You***

I have taught both singing and acting for over 17 years and have the honor of working with some amazing students including, American Idol finalist Rachel Hale, Singer/Song writer Sara Skinner, Bluegrass singer Joseph Hott, Actress Molly Quinn, Actor John R Colley, Ark-La-Tex’s country star, Klancy Johnson, singer/actress Tara Clem and many, many more.

Here are some examples of how I can help: vocal node/polyp elimination therapy, increasing vocal range, eliminating “breaks” in your range, supported sound, natural breathing techniques, body alignment, conquering performance anxiety, stage presence, song interpretation, and positive internal programming.

I began teaching private vocal lessons in 1998. I have taught for two schools of music, First United Methodist Music School in Texarkana, Arkansas and Burbank Music Academy in Burbank, California. In 2007, I began offering vocal lessons online through Skype. My current studio is located in Manhattan.

I've been a member of the National Association of Teacher's of singing for 6 years and am also a member of Actors Equity, SAG-AFTRA, NARAS (the Grammy's) and a lifetime member for the music fraternity Sigma Alpha Iota. I hold 2 Fine Arts degrees in Music and Drama as well as a Bachelor of Applied Arts; Sciences in Administrative Leadership with an emphasis in Psychology.

*** Lesson Details ***

In your lesson, I start where you're at. I identify immediate problems and then put you on a regimen to move you toward your vocal best. I am a stern but encouraging teacher. I expect a vocalist to practice.

Whether a beginner or seasoned performer. My goal is to get your voice to a place of ease in production and to articulate your performance in a way to connect with your audience.

Each lesson is recorded and emailed so you can listen and practice. Practicing is imperative to building your vocal muscles and performance skills.

Here is a list of other benefits that I provide: ear training, finding your true voice - not just an imitation of your favorite vocalist, smart career goal setting, overcoming stage fright, audition/interview techniques, positive self-programming, finding your acting "type"career marketing strategies, how to work "where you're at", scene study, monologue preparation, and a building basic musical theatre audition book.

I am a songwriter, composer, and performer living in New York City. I am a formally trained musician with considerable real world performing experience. Teaching music is something I enjoy immensely and something I am extremely passionate about.

During my time as a college student studying music, I began teaching guitar lessons. I found the work to be extremely rewarding. I teach guitar from beginner to advanced levels of performance, in many styles. I teach piano up to an intermediate level. I specialize in Jazz, Folk, Blues, Rock, Funk, and pretty much any contemporary style a student might be interested in learning. Although not my specialty, I am capable of teaching classical styles as well.

I am very excited to teach anyone interested in learning about the wonders of music, and I work with all ages.

In my lessons, students can expect to have fun while learning. I am friendly, warm, personable, caring, patient, and fun. I strive to find the perfect balance between learning the important fundamentals of music, and just plain enjoying music. Music takes hard work, but music is supposed to be fun!

I am a laid back person, and I do not expect any strict formalities when interacting with students. I feel that the more comfortable a student is, the more easily that student can learn and have fun doing so. However, I do expect my students to thoroughly practice, to focus, and to strive to improve.

I tailor each lesson to a student's particular needs. Everyone learns and interprets music in different ways, so I strive to serve each of my students uniquely. From basic fundamentals to advanced techniques, I cover everything. I also give each student an opportunity to choose some music that they will enjoy learning.

My curriculum changes depending on the student's ability level, age, and instrument of choice. I typically use a method book for reinforcement of musical fundamentals, and a supplementary "project" piece of music that the student enjoys playing and learning. I do this so that my students can see direct connections between music fundamentals and playing music that they enjoy. My own personal knowledge and experience as a musician is always added to each lesson as well.

*** Travel Equipment ***
For guitar lessons, I provide my guitar and any equipment that the student may not have initially, like for example, their own guitar, or music stand. Piano students will need their own keyboard for the very first lesson. The student should eventually provide their own instrument and equipment, such as their own guitar, music stand, and copy of the selected method book; all of which are things that they will need in order to pursue practicing on their own time.

I'm a pro saxophonist in NYC, currently performing both in the NYC area and internationally.

*** Lesson Details ***
I offer three distinct types of lessons.

1) For 7-12 grade music students, I offer lessons geared towards preparing you for the NYSSMA competition. We work on the basic requirements for participation, can work together to narrow down the options and select the right piece for you to perform, and improve your musicality as a whole. I have sent many students to NYSSMA, all with positive res
ults. 2) My more expansive lessons are for beginner musicians and up. We work as basically as scales, modes, and fingerings, as well as a little bit of jazz history. As you progress, we dig deeper into jazz theory, focusing on the standards and improvisational theory. Like anything else, you get out of it what you put into it, and as long as you are willing to work towards becoming a better player, you will. 3) For NON-SAXOPHONE students with an interest in jazz improvisational techniques, I offer jazz improvisation lessons. This requires an intermediate level of proficiency on your instrument. We cover standards, different techniques to apply over different patterns of chord changes, and even basic elements of composition.

I like to keep the atmosphere light and positive during lessons, so we can have a good time and still be learning. I love to work on appropriate music that the student suggests, or has an interest in. Pending the level of the student, we may even arrange for special appearances at some of my performances.

My son Nicholas, 10 yrs old, has been taking saxophone lessons with Imraan for about a month. Searching for a young motivated teacher who is up to date with todays music is very difficult. My fear was for Nicholas to get discouraged in his saxophone playing and music with a non motivated instructor.
Imraan has been the perfect match for Nick. He is not only an excellent saxophone player but a great instructor. He motivates my son with his saxophone playing, has patients with his teachings and with kids, is up to date with todays music and most important, my son cant wait for his next lesson.

Imraan, Im glad we met you and look forward to hearing my son play in concert with you someday.

In a one hour lesson, we will spend twenty five minutes on vocal exercises designed to teach support and placement. Having performed leads on and Off Broadway, I know that without good technique you can't do eight shows a week, do back to back sets in a nightclub or cabaret or tour as a pop or rock singer. The second half of the lesson is spent on songs. As an acting as well as vocal coach, I focus on dramatics as well as musical interpretation. A singer must be connected to the words as well as the music. I hope to teach you to love singing as much as I do.

Mary Phillips is excellent! I highly recommend her. Her knowledge of technique and her ability to explain it's proper applications helped my daughter improve not only her vocal quality but her range. Mary also worked on building her self confidence and attitude. I've notice a significant improvement in her approach to auditions. She is less nervous and more confident in her skills. We had a hard time trying to find an instructor who values someone with a lower range. I wish we had found her earlier!

Mary was an absolute godsend! I started lessons with her to help prepare for college theatre auditions. I was so overwhelmed with the whole process and didn't even know where to begin picking monologues and songs. Mary helped me so much by sending different monologues that she thought would fit and we would go from there. She was always there to answer any questions I had, and I had a lot! She is patient and encouraging and our lessons were always a lot of fun but I also learned so much! I also took voice lessons from Mary and in doing so, my voice has greatly improved and so has my confidence. I just finished all of my auditions and I truly could not have done this without her. I couldn't recommend her more!

Katie is an ok teacher but I had a bad experience regarding a missed lesson. I was charged for a lesson ($60) that I cancelled 10 minutes prior to start time but called back 15 minutes later (that would be 5 minutes into our lesson time) to say we could make it. Katie had moved up another student and could not do our lesson but charged us any way!! If we were going to be charged for an hour of her time, she should have been available during that hour or at least given us 15- 20 minutes like the other teachers do. Also, if she moved up another student, why not let us take his spot?? The reason for their rule of charging for missed lessons is because the teacher misses out on that hour of income. Well she made double time during my paid hour!! What bothers me even more is that she cancelled one of our lessons just 2 hours before it was supposed to begin, and I was very understanding and accommodating. I did not give her a hard time or complain at all and just rescheduled. She didn't even consider returning the favor. Her lack of ethics really bothers me! Don't expect any favors from this one, she's all about the bucks!!! One word, "karma".

My goal of teaching is to help students discover their talent and love for music in a natural way. I began jamming music with my parents when I was 3 years old. I remember the feeling of joy and excitement when making music with them. Now as a teacher, I try to bring this enjoyment based approach to classes and teach my students to not think they are working and instead, enjoy the practice of making music. I believe that when a student is inspired and enjoys the learning process, they naturally strive to get better.

As I began playing piano at a very young age, I've developed an ability called absolute pitch. It is a rare auditory phenomenon that enabled me to play nearly any song I heard, without having a score. And this really help me to teach my students the songs they love as scores are not always readily available and I am abl
e to write out a customized score that suits their level.

My students will have covered different areas of music, including classical repertoire, jazz, rock, pop, composition and theory. I give private lessons for all ages and levels for piano in my technology integrated home studio in Briarcliff Manor, NY. I received my degree from Berklee College of Music and New York University. I'm also certified with the associated board of the Royal school of music and Trinity College of Music in London.

Since then, I have performed throughout the United States and earned a doctoral degree in piano performance, but these days most of what I do is teach. I am classically trained, though I have worked with students on a range of musical styles. I get tremendous satisfaction from helping my students overcome their challenges. Regardless of the age or experience that a student brings, my goal is to help make piano playing personally enriching and musically satisfying.

Here are the qualities I think you should look for in a teacher and the ways in which I think I offer them.

MUSICALITY
A teacher should have an ear for what
makes music colorful and beautiful. I believe that the goal of musicians should be to attune our inner ears to the music behind the notes that sit on a page before us and then let that music flow through us. We all hear different qualities in the notes, but as long as we honestly try to get inside the notes before we touch our instrument, we can all make beautiful music.

TECHNIQUE
Once we have an idea of the way we want the music to sound, we need technique to produce those sounds. Early in my training, I experienced discomfort from the poor way in which I was playing. As a result, I had to retrain myself completely. I was fortunate enough to find three teachers of the Taubman Approach who helped me to understand the connections between playing in a coordinated way and playing beautifully. As a result of having made many mistakes myself and then overcoming them, I have developed the ability to see what is holding back my students and to help them find better ways of approaching the piano.

MATERIALS
The best music for students is the music that motivates them to practice. That said, at certain times, I think some pieces will help a student get to the next level, and others will only tie the student in knots. I have taught a lot of repertoire in a variety of styles. I can give students at any level music that is appropriate for them. I am also always eager to work on music that my students bring me.

To give students skills that directly apply to their playing, I also incorporate theory, ear training, sight reading, and scales into lessons.

INSTRUMENT
Although I have no qualms about teaching students who have electric keyboards, acoustic instruments give better aural feedback to pianists about the health of their technique. At least once a week I make sure my students get to play on an instrument that responds to their efforts with a beautiful sound: either my own 1913 Steinway B, or one of a variety of good grand pianos at the midtown studio where I teach.

PRACTICE METHODS
Students can expect to learn a lot in their lessons, but lessons usually only happen once a week. The quality and quantity of the student’s practice the rest of the week is critical. At each point in the process of learning a piece, there are different practice methods that help a pianist get to the next step. I think I can see where students are in the learning process and can guide their practice so that their time spent at home is optimized.

PERFORMANCE EXPERIENCE
Many students enjoy playing music for themselves, but when they are asked to play for others, the joy of the experience turns into fear of embarrassment. There is no quick and easy solution to performance anxiety, but having worked through it in hundreds of performances, I can say there are certainly ways to reduce it and even make performing joyful. Understanding that playing for others is an experience of sharing, not “impressing,” and practicing in a way that helps one to see, hear, and feel the music the instant before one plays it are at the core of my method.

PERFORMANCE OPPORTUNITIES
I teach children and adult students. I do not force anyone to perform, though I encourage it. I am a member of two associations of independent piano teachers that sponsor recitals and competitions for my young students. My adult students and I usually get together at my apartment twice a year for a piano-food-fest.

FLEXIBILITY
Ultimately, there is no single way to teach all students. Students come to me with different degrees of musical training, physical awareness and dexterity, musical tastes, discipline, and patience. It is my job to figure out what will light each student’s fire and help them to practice through their challenges so that they can enjoy the beautiful and all-consuming experience of making music.

I had a great experience taking piano lessons from David. After several years away from the piano, I wasn't entirely sure where to start. David took me back to the beginning and focused on fundamentals and technique. Not only did this improve my playing, but it also helped me develop awareness of areas that I could work on when I practiced. I found David to be a wonderful teacher who teaches a good balance of technique and artistry, and I would take lessons with him again.

Lessons with David were my favorite time of the week during college. He worked on both basic techniques and finer details and nuances, which made the lessons very creatively satisfying. As a student, I hold him in the highest regard. If you haven't signed up for a lesson, you're missing out!

I always wanted to learn how to play the piano and it wasn't until the age of 29 that I decided that there was no better time than now to start taking lessons. As a beginner, I am so thankful to have David as my teacher. He stressed the importance of technique even though he knows that I just really want to learn how to play so I could show off at a dinner party. Without this, I wouldn't have progressed as quickly as I have. He is incredibly patient, which is what I like most about him as a teacher. Given that I started with David as a true beginner, he had to go over the same things repeatedly, for months on end, and he was never once impatient. He also thinks about his students outside of his lessons and that speaks volumes. I only like certain types of music and am quite stubborn about only playing what I like. He not only understands this but will send me links to songs and brings pieces of music to our lesson because I often have difficulty finding pieces that I like or that are the right fit for my skill level.

If it weren't for David's steadfast positivity, his kindness and his genuine desire to see me grow and learn as a piano player, I would not still be taking lessons from him three plus years later. Luckily for me, that is not the case and I look forward to having many more lessons with him. I highly recommend David as a teacher!

My name is Elana. I'm a professional violinist and enjoy teaching students of all ages and levels. My students have ranged from ages 4-64. Their goals have ranged from pure enjoyment to those considering a career in music. My goal is to help each student play to the best of their abilities and for them to enjoy the lessons. Violin is my passion, which comes through in my enthusiasm during lessons. I am gentle and patient but also honest and very particular about what to look for when practicing.

I take great pride in teaching the Russian method. Not only is the technique I teach used by the best violinists of all time, it also emphasizes efficient and correct use of the body to avoid injury and develop a tone with richness and projection.

What I look for in a student is a commitment to practicing every day. It's an
adjustment in the beginning for many, but once established simply becomes part of the day, like brushing your teeth. Over time, students hear improvements from practicing consistently and this creates a very positive experience. The violin becomes a source of joy and confidence.

Violin lessons help develop skills such as coordination and focus at the highest level, persistence, confidence, creativity, patience, and many other "life" skills whose benefits extend far beyond music lessons. Many people who achieve success in a career outside music later in life often credit their music lessons as having been key in that process.

As far as my musical background, I received my music degree from Rutgers University, where I was a recipient of the Marryott Music Scholarship. Upon graduation I freelanced as a violinist in the NYC metro area. My major teachers include Neil Weintrob and Lewis Kaplan.

As a teacher I have 20 years of experience. I've worked in various programs and currently teach violin and viola lessons at a local private school, in addition to running a private studio of violin and piano students. My violin students have been concertmaster, principal players, and section players in orchestras such as All-County, Region I, and NY Youth Symphony.
