About Geoff

Hi, my name is Geoff and I play Double Bass, Bass Guitar, Cello and Piano. I played full time in a Symphony orchestra for 20 yrs., began playing Piano in 1963, Bass Guitar 1970, Double Bass 1977 and Cello 1982. I prescribe lessons complete with Solo, Ensemble, and Technical Playing and Reading Skills thoroughly as well as progressively. I make the lessons fun and interesting and relate well with all types of personalities. My students view me as a teacher and friend who' s a good listener when they have things like overloads in homework from school and other complications that kids face. They do great at NYSSMA and are asked to play in all ensembles at school. I love animals and my hobbies are hiking in the mountains including in snow and ice, camping, building things and work on my own car when I can. Most of my students stay with me for

8-10 yrs. and handle themselves very well in all ensembles. They play to earn scholarships for college as well and play for life. Happy Playing!

About Chris

I am a licensed music teacher and board-certified music therapist. I began teaching private piano lessons in 2005 during my undergraduate degree. I attended William Paterson University and received a degree in music education. Upon graduating, I received the William Paterson University 2010 Outstanding Classical Performer award. In 2017 I earned an M.A. in music therapy from Montclair State University, where I was awarded the David Ott Scholarship for Outstanding Music Therapy Intern. Learning music therapy has given me deeper insight into my teaching. My favorite part of music is the learning process. I enjoy performing music, but I personally get more out of learning it. Teaching allows me to be involved in the learning process with other people. I can assess a student's abilities and develop plans and materials that address his or her

musical needs. A deep understanding of music and the learning process guides me during my lessons, and I enjoy guiding students through their musical struggles and victories. In addition to classical piano, I also sing, play upright bass, and guitar. Most of my students are piano students, but I also teach guitar and bass.

*** Lesson Details ***
Since each person is different, my lessons are tailored to the individual. I don't have set lesson plans that all my students adhere to. The lessons are designed to fulfill each individual student's unique needs. My specialty is in classical music, so my students learn how to read sheet music. I also provide a solid foundation in music theory, piano technique, and interpretation. I'm laid back and easy to get along with, but I do expect my students to practice. I see my role as a musical guide. That means that I can help students who want to learn, but I can't make anyone learn music. The more you put into music, the more you get out of it. When my students take my advice during the lessons and practice at home, they progress quite quickly.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I will provide music books, staff paper, and pencils. I expect students to have an instrument of decent quality to have a lesson on.

*** Specialties ***
I'm primarily a classical pianist with experience playing in a variety of settings. I’ve played in rock bands, I've done musicals, and I played upright bass in a folk/jazz band. I have an in depth understanding of music theory and moderate understanding of jazz harmony.
I don't adhere to any one specific teaching method. I find that since every individual is unique, individualized teaching approaches are necessary to suit a student's personal needs.

Chris is an excellent instructor, but more than that he really cares for his students and always goes the extra mile! I own a music school in NJ and Chris has worked for me teaching many students over the past several years and I get nothing but compliments on his teaching style. If you are looking for a great piano teacher you have found him with Chris!

I highly recommend Sarah. She has excellent skills for any teacher - she's encouraging, knowledgeable and patient. I'm an adult who played piano years ago and always wanted to play the flute but I was frustrated, squeaky, out of breath, and out of tune. With a few weeks of lessons I'm further along than I was trying to teach myself over years.
I had years of serious music study with critical music teachers who made me embarrassed about mistakes and dread my lessons. With Sarah, the learning is fun and I now look forward to every lesson.

Even though I am a novice, she taught me from reading notes to how to appreciate music by explaining very well. But I had to do what I had to do, HW and practice!!!

I will strongly recommend her to anyone.

Honestly, Gina was a strict teacher and great teacher at the same time. I had to practice a lot, but it was really rewarding experience. She is very patient and guided me to understand how profound classical piano is. My playing technique improved significantly.

I would strongly recommend Gina to anyone who wants to improve!

I had my first lesson today in Mandarin as a novice. Lulu is obviously an excellent tutor. She is organized, knowledgeable about the physical processes of phonetics, and extremely encouraging. I can not wait to go deeper into the Chinese language with her as my tutor. I strongly recommend taking lessons from her.

"Mike is truly a patient, excellent teacher & communicator. He totally understands my needs and limitations, and always finds a way to address them and the

I am absolutely confident that in the very near future I will be able to play the banjo and be able to jam with others - and I attribute all of that to Mike and his approach. My only regret is that I didn't meet him 17 years ago when I first moved to the area and decided to learn to play the banjo. I wholeheartedly recommend him for anyone - he loves to play and he loves to teach."

"Sam has been the viola instructor for our daughter Ava (12 years-old) for over a year now. We can't say enough good things about Sam. He's punctual, eas
y to work and talk with, flexible with his schedule and gives wonderful feedback on how Ava's doing. He is patient, mild-mannered, attentive, encouraging, supportive, and he really makes the most of the time spent teaching Ava. It didn't take more than a few lessons until we can hear an improvement in Ava's playing. He nurtures the passion she has musically and his support as an instructor helps motivate her to become better with each lesson. She practices on her own without being reminded as she wants to be able to even make the slightest improvement between each lesson. It's great and we're lucky to have found the perfect instructor for Ava the first try:) Thank you! Sam:)"
