Marimba

No need to be nervous before my lessons.  I have taught lessons to ages 6 to students in their 70's! My lessons have a comfortable atmosphere where students can be okay learning with mistakes; through trial and error.  I always keep a light mood with quick bits of humor.  I teach in a relaxing way, but at the same time you may expect to leave with new musical knowledge every lesson. I enjoy showing the connections between music and other areas of study and life. I always finds ways to work a student's personal interests into lessons. I always strive to help students learn how to practice in an efficient and organized way.

I am a published composer and active performer/teacher/conductor with a Bachelor's Degree in Music Education and a Master's Degree in Conducting!

Hi!  My name is Dylan, and I graduated from the Berklee College of Music. I play the drums, vibraphone, marimba, xylophone, and piano! I've been a musician since I was 8 years old.  

I have played in nearly a dozen regularly gigging groups, performing on Drums, Vibraphone, and Keyboard.  

I've been teaching private lessons since 2008, and it is a passion of mine. I really love sharing musical knowledge with people, it is one of my favorite things to do.

My two other passions are art and foreign languages. I currently work as a tattoo artist, and spend nearly 3 hours each day drawing and painting. I’m eager to teach art lessons to anyone who wants to learn how to draw or paint. 

I was lucky to learn French through immersion, and love to share my knowledge of the language. I’m familiar with both the grammatical rules and intricacies of the language, as well as informal and everyday speech. As a non native speaker, I’m very familiar with the challenges posed to French learners, and love to share the tips and tricks I’ve learned along the way.

My son has recently started taking lessons with Mike always look forwards to his percussion lessons. Mike has helped him with improving on many different types of percussion instruments and at the same time makes the lesson fun.  Mike is friendly and very helpful with my questions which I really appreciate as a parent.

Marimba:
A percussion instrument consisting of a set of wooden bars struck with mallets to produce musical tones. Resonators suspended underneath the bars amplify their sound. The bars of a chromatic marimba are arranged like the keys of a piano, with the groups of 2 and 3 accidentals raised vertically, overlapping the natural bars to aid the performer both visually and physically. This instrument is a type of idiophone, but with a more resonant and lower-pitched tessitura than the xylophone.  Like all instruments I teach we would start right from the beginning with learning hand technique, notes, rhythms, reading, chords, songs, theory and soloing.

It is completely untrue that some people are "born to sing or play an instrument" while others are not. With my expertise a person who believes they have no talent can learn any instrument, the most "tone deaf" can learn to sing perfectly in tune, and someone who thinks they have "no talent" can become better than anyone out there. I have a unique and very patient teaching style that makes learning any instrument seem easy!

It all started out in a small town called Chatham, NJ where I spent the first thirteen years of my life. I remember loving music as early as I could walk and talk. I started taking guitar lessons when I was seven years old. Along with the guitar, came a love for singing and writing my own songs. When we moved to Pennsylvania the guitar came with me. Throughout my high school years, I spent hours playing with teachers, fellow students, and parties.

When I was sixteen every week for three years I would drive an hour into Philadelphia, by myself, to study with world-famous Artie Singer. His students include such names as Chubby Checker, Frankie Avalon, Al Martino, and Bobby Rydel. Artie co-wrote and produced two massive hit records “At the Hop” and “Rock ‘n Roll is Here to Stay,” both recorded by Danny and the Juniors. 

While going to a Community College in Philadelphia the music teacher there took notice of me, pulled me aside, and told me about a great music school I should attend. He then sent away the application and helped me fill it out. The next thing I knew I was in Boston attending Berklee School of Music! I graduated Magna Cum Laude with a degree in Jazz and Rock Composition, Arranging, and Guitar.

I had originally gone to Berklee intending to major in voice. However, I had no luck with the vocal department there and ended up with nodules on my vocal cords. The damage was so significant that I had to stop singing during my four years at Berklee and turned to study Guitar and Composition.

I tried every vocal teacher in town wanting more than anything to be a singer. What I found was no teacher could help me and it seemed obvious that even though they had the “big name” they didn't know what they wt. I was losing hope. The combination of this roadblock and my persistence led me to the greatest thing that ever happened in my life....... I met Dante Pavone!

I kept hearing about a singing teacher named Dante Pavone. Since I had already tried everyone else, I decided to give him a shot.

I have a Percussion Performance Degree from Arizona State University, have authored over 6 books on how to play better including: ART Approach to Keyboard Percussion Sightreading, ART Approach to Rhythm!, Turn It Up & Lay It Down, The Book (with Joe Bergamini and Spence Strand) I have over 26 years of teaching experience and constantly work to find better ways to show people how to be great. I am currently working on 4 new books in the Percussion area and about a dozen more for other instruments.I work with each student to find out what motivates them and how to set goals to reach whatever level they seek. I have worked with almost every age possible and find it exciting to see people find out how great they are.
