Singing is an extension of speech. Good breath support is needed. Vowels and consonants are two best friends for the singer. Even though I am classically trained as a singer, I have explored successfully other vocal genres like popular and jazz. Though a singer, I am first a music educator. Most times, I learn along with my students and I enjoy what I do. Rudiments of singing are taught right away and reinforced with each lesson. Beside vocal technique, the student is exposed to various genres of music as well as singing music the student wants to sing. Technology is used for recording, listening, and performance.

About Michael
Born and raised in New Jersey, I have been involved with music for many years. The instruments that I play include Trumpet, French Horn, Handbells, Organ, Voice, and Piano. I received my formal education at Moravian College in Bethlehem, PA, which is where I earned a B.A. degree with Honors in Music. In order to obtain my Honors, I chose to develop elementary lessons on Chinese folk music. In my Junior year of college, I performed a dual media recital in both Voice and Piano, and for my Senior year recital, I focused on giving a Vocal performance. These recitals demonstrated the musical talent and techniques that I had developed throughout my experience at college. In addition to my musical experiences in college, I have also learned about various pedagogical approaches through both my vocal studies as well as my studies on the keyb
oard. There is always more than one approach to teaching musical concepts! As a musician, I have performed in both the Bethlehem/Allentown area and the central New Jersery area. In addition, I have sung as a member of the Princeton Pro Musica and sat as a member on the executive board of the Princeton Girlchoir. These experiences have enhanced my professional insight as a musical instructor today. At present, I am a teacher in the classroom, an organist at a local Presbyterian church, and a private piano instructor. Overall, I thoroughly enjoy seeing my students grow and develop as musicians.

*** Lesson Details ***
My instruction correlates with the age, the musical background, and the public/private school music curriculum of the student. Each lesson is a special musical vignette in the sense that it is a unique learning time for the student. It is important for the student to be motivated by the material that they are given and to have a full understanding of the concept(s) that were taught in the lesson. Above all other reasons, it is most important for the student to enjoy their piano lessons and want to come back the next week. Therefore, it is my job as the instructor to inspire them to practice and benefit from each and every lesson. Whether it be vocal or piano instruction, each lesson consists of fun warm-ups, interesting technical exercises, and repertoire of all sorts. What the student learns in 3-6 months depends upon the motivation of the student as well as my ability to teach what the student needs to know in order to achieve their goals as a pianist and/or vocalist. Regarding my methods of instructing piano students, I use the Middle C method for players of all levels. Those who are more advanced use triads as well. My overall goal as a teacher is to work with my students and give them the skills that are necessary to play music that they enjoy.

*** Studio Equipment ***
lessons in living room; 2 pianos (C2 Yamaha and Steinway upright); organ

We are very pleased with how Michael approaches piano lessons for our 4 1/2 year old son. He incorporates singing and movement into the lessons and keeps him engaged throughout. Great patience and sense of humor as well.

Michael is a great teacher. He focuses on understanding of concepts. For more fluent play we always need to practice a lot, but if we do not understand the concepts behind musical notation, we do not even know where to begin. He is also very encouraging and guides us out of mistakes in a way that the logic sticks. Highly recommended - you will enjoy learning with him

Lessons with Mike Mraz was a Christmas present from my son, Andrew. I enjoy singing, yet have never had occasion to study music or to take private lessons. Mike helped me clarify my goals: breath control, vocal mechanics, reading music and having fun. He graciously sent me some primer materials and located sheet music for several of my favorite Broadway show tunes. Our five 45-minute sessions together were both instructive and enjoyable. As I approach age 70, I can check "work with a voice coach" on my "Bucket List." Kudos for Mike!

Hello!

I am a working, professional operatic tenor in the Philadelphia area. I have been teaching for the past 6 years in San Diego, Houston, and Salt Lake City. I have sung with many professional operatic companies including San Diego Opera, Aspen Opera Theatre, The Santa Fe Opera, Des Moines Metro Opera, and Opera de Tijuana.

My students receive world-class training as well as a highly personalized approach that ensures their goals are attained. I emphasize a foundation of healthy vocal technique. We then use those principals in whichever genre my student wishes --- music theatre, pop, rock, jazz, gospel, country, or opera. Our sessions are relaxed and fun while also focusing on key concepts and repertoire that the student wants to learn.

Whether singing is a dream job for you or you would just like to learn how to use your voice for fun, I can help you to use your voice healthily so that the only thing you need to do is enjoy the singing experience.

Lessons consist of learning a solid vocal technique, and learning various repertoire from Broadway, pop, to classical. Also, performing skills will be incorporated, so that the singer feels comfortable acting the song as well. I strongly believe that singers must be actors, and that is what makes us different from instrumentalists. It is also a lot of fun! For children or adults who are willing, I also teach sight singing and spend some of the lessons time learning some basic reading skills.

About Sandra
Sandra began her training at the Settlement Music School in Philadelphia. She is a two time recipient of the Mario Lanza Award, and holds a B.M. degree in opera from the Philadelphia College of Performing Arts. She studied acting at both the Wilma and Walnut Theaters in Philadelphia. Sandra was engaged for seven years at Theater des Westens in Berlin, Germany, where she performed extensively in Musicals and Operetta. She also toured throughout Germany with the ensemble "Operetten Express". I have been teaching for the past 8 years and am passionate about healthy, comfortable singing. My lessons are structured to include vocal warmups/technique exercises, sight singing to strengthen musicianship, and then the working of repertoire. I will have suggestions for repertoire, but also am happy to work on anything the student may be interested in.

About Charlea Lyn
Hello! My name is Charlea Lyn, and I want to begin by thanking you for taking a look at my profile. It has always been one of my firm beliefs that anyone can sing as singing can be defined by “uttering words or sounds in succession with musical modulations of the voice.” Therefore, with this mentality in mind I feel as though it is not a job, but more a privilege to be able to teach people to sing.

My parents say I started singing before I could talk, however, I seriously started taking lessons when I was 14. Over the course of my lessons, I fell in love with opera, and decided that was what I wanted to pursue as a career path. That decision led me to SUNY Fredonia, where I received my BM in Music Education and Vocal Performance, and later to the San Francisco Conservatory of Music where I received my MM in Vocal Performance in May
'13 under the tutelage of Catherine Cook.

One of the most important things that I have learned thus far, is that singing is a truly expressive art form that requires hard work, diligence, and commitment. It is my goal to bring each of my students the farthest I can in healthily developing their technique as well as work on the emotional portrayal and fundamental building blocks of music. Although I teach each student specific to his or her individual needs and desires, my lessons usually consist of three parts - technique exercises, sight singing, and repertoire. Furthermore, other things that stay consistent are a comfortable and safe environment for the student, my undivided attention, all the information that I have to share with others, and most importantly FUN!

Although it is my personal decision to pursue opera and classical music, I have experience in musical theatre and am comfortable teaching a variety of genres. I truly believe that although each genre is different, the foundation and principles of healthy singing are the same.

Not every teacher is right for every student. However, I do my best to give all my students lessons in a comfortable and productive learning environment. I hope that you will take the next step of your path towards healthy and beautiful vocal production with me. Thank you for your time and consideration and I hope to hear from you soon!

Last year my 16-year old and 13-year-old daughter both started taking lessons with Erin and although they came in at very different levels, I was floored with how much they have each grown as singers—in their technique, artistry, and confidence. Erin was able to pinpoint their individual needs and help them each improve in a way that made them enjoy singing even more. My 13-year-old had never before Erin found a teacher who could keep her motivated. Beyond what she taught them, Erin is a wonderful advocate for my daughters and encourages and supports them through their auditions, performances, and competitions. I am so thankful for her impact on my daughters’ lives.
