Beginning students work from the Alfred Premier Piano Course, later transitioning to the Pathways to Artistry series by my former teacher, Catherine Rollin. We work on developing a curved hand position with relaxed wrists and strong finger joints. I use technical exercises to teach artistic expression rather than teaching these two elements separately. Beginning students count and sing note-names out-loud to integrate theory and note-reading with their playing. I accept piano students ages five and older. I do not accept piano students younger than five because their hands are too small to play comfortably.

About Blythe
My name is very unusual, so some students have difficulty pronouncing it. You pronounce the "y" as in "sky" and the "the" as in "breathe". My name has only one syllable. Don't worry if you're still having trouble with it--I'll help you out at our first lesson.

I grew up in southeast Michigan and have been in love with music for as long as I can remember. I started violin lessons when I was three years old and at five I became the youngest student ever accepted into the studio of James Waring, now-retired violinist with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. Under Mr. Waring, I developed a solid virtuoso technique and worked on chamber music as well as solo and concerto repertoire for the violin. While I was an undergraduate student at Westminster Choir College, I continued my violin study with Dr. Mia Wu.

After six years of violin st
udy, I added piano lessons. I studied with Catherine Rollin, an internationally-known teacher and composer. Ms. Rollin's practical approach to technique and musicianship has been extremely influential in my own teaching, and I use her exercises and compositions with my students. I studied a wide range of repertoire with Ms. Rollin but my very favorite pieces were those by Bach, Chopin, and Debussy.

I sang in choirs throughout my childhood and began taking voice lessons in high school. I eventually decided to study voice performance at Westminster Choir College, where I completed my Bachelor of Music degree in 2004 and my Master of Music degree in vocal pedagogy and performance in 2008. While a student at Westminster, I performed the soprano roles of Ifigenia in Handel's Oreste, Amy in Mark Adamo's Little Women, and Janthe in Heinrich Marschner's Der Vampyr. I have coached with Daniel Beckwith, J. J. Penna, and Dalton Baldwin, and was privileged to sing in the Westminster Choir and the Westminster Symphonic Choir under Dr. Joseph Flummerfelt. With the Westminster Choir, I recorded the album Heaven to Earth and performed in Lakmé and I Capuleti e i Montecchi at the Spoleto Festival U.S.A. in Charleston, South Carolina. I also performed Handel's Messiah with Sir Neville Marriner and Nicholas McGegan, Mahler's Symphony No. 3 with Sir Michael Tilson Thomas and Lorin Maazel, Berlioz's Requiem with Charles Dutoit, and Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 with Lorin Maazel.

I have taught in the Princeton area since 2008, maintaining a studio of about twenty-five voice, piano, and violin students. In addition, I sing as cantor and soprano section leader at Queenship of Mary Catholic Church. I live with my husband, Jerome, in Plainsboro and I love to knit, crochet, and sew when I'm not teaching or performing.

My goal in teaching is to foster a love of music and a passion for the arts. I focus on developing my students as musicians in general and on a relaxed technique that will allow for the best possible artistic expression.

*** Studio Policies ***

Tuition

There are 38 lessons each year, scheduled from September through June. The schedule will be distributed at the beginning of the 2017-18 academic year and may be found on the TakeLessons website.

30-minute lessons     $34.00
45-minute lessons     $45.00
60-minute lessons     $56.00

Tuition encompasses lesson time and overhead costs including lesson preparation, office hours, event preparation, and studio recital performance opportunities. Lesson lengths are recommended by the teacher based on student age, level, and availability. Tuition is collected through TakeLessons.

Attendance

Just as strong attendance is expected in school, strong attendance is expected at music lessons. As a courtesy of the studio, one make-up lesson is offered per student per academic year.  Make-up lessons will be scheduled in late June. The studio shall not assume responsibility for the student's absences outside of this allotted absence.

In the event of a student cancellation, the teacher is to be contacted via email, text message, or phone call for notification as soon as the student is aware of the cancellation.

In anticipation of absence, students/parents may choose from the following options to facilitate continued progress:
• The student/parent may send the teacher a video recording (i.e. via DropBox). The teacher can provide an electronic critique, utilizing the lesson time to watch, listen, and write a critique and assignment for the week.
• The student/parent may elect to use the *Student Swap Directory.

If the student stays home from school or work on their lesson day due to contagious illness, or was excused early from school due to contagious illness, it is requested they not attend their lesson. The teacher has the authority to excuse a contagiously ill student from their lesson. In these situations, make-ups will be offered upon request outside of the allotted absence.

In the event the teacher needs to cancel due to an unforeseen circumstance, she shall notify students and parents of the cancellation as soon as possible through email and/or phone.

For every cancellation made by the teacher, two make-up date options will be offered to the student. The student is to select one. If the student cancels or does not attend the scheduled make-up lesson, the lesson will be marked as missed. The teacher reserves the right to offer a credit or electronic critique in lieu of the above-mentioned make-up lesson in appropriate circumstances.

*Student Swap Directory

Students/parents may elect to be a part of the Student Swap Directory, designed to offer possible opportunities for students to swap lessons in anticipation of a lesson conflict. Parents/students are responsible for arranging their lesson swaps. If a lesson swap is made, it is the responsibility of the parent/student to inform the teacher.

To be included in the Student Swap Directory, a permission slip, provided by the teacher, will need to be completed and returned to the teacher, allowing the student’s name(s), parent’s name(s), lesson day(s), time(s), and length(s), and email and phone contact information to be shared.  The Student Swap Directory will be distributed at the start of the 2017-18 academic year.

Weather Emergencies

Lessons will generally not be held in the studio on days when West Windsor-Plainsboro Public Schools are closed due to inclement weather. If roads are cleared and passable by the time of the student’s lesson, they may attend their lesson at their own risk. If there is­­­ a one- or two-hour delay, lessons will still be held according to the lesson schedule.
 
When West Windsor-Plainsboro Public Schools are closed due to inclement weather, Google Chat, Skype, or FaceTime lessons will be conducted from the studio. The teacher will contact the students/parents to arrange the lesson. This will prioritize safety and will also allow students to adhere to the lesson schedule for optimized progress. Laptops, iPads, Tablets, iPhones/Smartphones, etc. may be used when the camera and microphone is adjusted and set in view of the student at the piano. Students are to have their music, theory book, assignment book, and a pencil ready to go. Students are to sign on approximately 5 minutes prior to their lesson time, with all settings appropriately adjusted. They are to call at their lesson time.

In lieu of a Google Chat, Skype, or FaceTime lesson, students may opt to send the teacher a video recording (i.e. via DropBox). The teacher can provide an electronic critique, utilizing the lesson time to watch, listen, and write a critique and assignment for the week.

Practicing

Regular practice is essential to musical development. Lessons will include the development of effective practice skills so that students are clear on how to practice. Practice builds muscle strength, coordination, problem-solving skills, focus, self-discipline, a sense of accomplishment, and the enjoyment of being able to make beautiful music through the process. In addition, the student will greatly improve their musical proficiency. The teacher will include written practice instructions in the student’s notebook. These instructions are to be read carefully each week to maximize effective practice time.

Students should practice a minimum of 5 days per week and the amount of daily practice should correlate with the length of their lessons. Students taking 30-minute lessons should practice 30 minutes a day, students taking 45-minute lessons should practice 45 minutes a day, and students taking 60-minute lessons should practice one hour each day. Practice time should be divided into 2-3 focused sessions with specific goals set for each practice session.

Repertoire

When new repertoire or a method book is assigned, it will be the responsibility of the student/parent to purchase it. Music may be purchased at Music and Arts in Mercer Mall on US Highway 1 in Lawrenceville, NJ.

Music may also be ordered online at Amazon and other websites recommended by the teacher.

Termination

Any student/parent wishing to terminate lessons must do so in writing. The termination will go into effect at the start of the following billing cycle. The studio shall not assume financial responsibility for the remainder of the billing cycle during which termination occurs. Borrowed music/materials will need to be returned to the teacher at the conclusion of study.

Additional Information

Violin students MUST bring their own instruments to the first lesson. Piano students must have their own pianos when lessons begin. An acoustic piano is strongly recommended, even for beginning students, but a full-size (88 keys) touch-sensitive electronic keyboard is also acceptable. More information is available upon request. Voice students are encouraged to practice with a piano or electronic keyboard but may use an online keyboard to check pitches if they do not own a piano. ***Lesson Details and Recommendations***

Singing voice: I teach classical vocal technique with an emphasis on the body-mind connection. Through the course of my training, I have studied the Alexander Technique, which is a method that has been used by actors, musicians, and athletes to find optimal body-mind coordination to achieve better results. The voice is the only instrument that is literally your body, so we will be using these tools to improve posture, breathing, and resonance. By learning a healthy vocal technique, you can expect improved tone quality, an expanded vocal and dynamic range, greater resonance, increased agility, improved diction, and more. Healthy vocal technique can be applied to any genre, and I teach students who are studying a wide variety of music, but classical and musical theater repertoire is my area of expertise.

Speaking voice: I have had great success helping students who come to me for help with their speaking voices. As the speaking voice and singing voice use the same set of muscles, the same set of functional principles apply. I work with students to improve their posture, breathing, and breath support when speaking, as well as clear diction, better pacing, and conveying emotion and meaning. These tools also lead to increased confidence when speaking.

Piano: I am also an established piano teacher and have had much success teaching beginning and intermediate students from ages 4 to 91 in various styles of music. I believe it is important for students to learn how to read and interpret written music as well as understand the structure behind it, so in addition to learning musical basics, I incorporate music theory into lessons. I encourage my piano students to learn how to read lead sheets and create chord accompaniments as well, which opens the door for comfortably playing in all sorts of styles sooner than would be possible by classical approaches alone. I also work on improvisation and songwriting with my piano students, if desired.

***Lesson Recommendations***
I offer lessons in 30, 45, and 60 minute increments. These are the *minimum* lesson lengths recommended. Longer lessons are more beneficial, except in the case of children with smaller attention spans. A 60 minute lesson is the best choice for serious students (teenagers or adults).

Ages <12 years: 30 minutes
Ages 12 and up: 45 minutes

Piano:
Ages <7 years: 30 minutes
Ages 7 and up: 45 minutes

Combination Lesson:
Ages <12 years: 45 minutes
Ages 12 and up: 60 minutes

*Please note: I do not reserve regular lesson times in my schedule for students who cannot commit to weekly lessons. With students who wish to take less frequent lessons, I recommend the flex plan, with lessons to be scheduled as we go at our mutual convenience.

***Educational Background***
Elizabeth holds an M.M. in vocal performance from West Virginia University, where she was featured in numerous WVU Opera Theatre productions and was the soprano soloist with WVU Choirs in Faure's Requiem and Handel's Lord Nelson Mass. While at WVU, Elizabeth resumed taking lessons at the piano, which she had previously studied for many years, and exceeded the piano proficiency level required by the university. She also holds a B.A. in music and international studies from Emory University. Elizabeth has studied and performed internationally, both at the American Institute of Musical Studies in Graz, Austria, where she was the recipient of the Lemmonds Scholarship, and at the Bel Canto program in conjunction with L'Arena di Verona opera company in Verona, Italy.

As a graduate assistant at WVU, Elizabeth taught voice lessons to music education and performance majors as well as a course on vocal pedagogy. After graduating, she served as adjunct faculty, in which capacity she taught vocal repertoire and opera theater. She has maintained a private studio since 2005, in which she instructs students in voice and piano. About Michael
Born and raised in New Jersey, I have been involved with music for many years. The instruments that I play include Trumpet, French Horn, Handbells, Organ, Voice, and Piano. I received my formal education at Moravian College in Bethlehem, PA, which is where I earned a B.A. degree with Honors in Music. In order to obtain my Honors, I chose to develop elementary lessons on Chinese folk music. In my Junior year of college, I performed a dual media recital in both Voice and Piano, and for my Senior year recital, I focused on giving a Vocal performance. These recitals demonstrated the musical talent and techniques that I had developed throughout my experience at college. In addition to my musical experiences in college, I have also learned about various pedagogical approaches through both my vocal studies as well as my studies on the keyb
oard. There is always more than one approach to teaching musical concepts! As a musician, I have performed in both the Bethlehem/Allentown area and the central New Jersery area. In addition, I have sung as a member of the Princeton Pro Musica and sat as a member on the executive board of the Princeton Girlchoir. Michael is a great teacher. He focuses on understanding of concepts. For more fluent play we always need to practice a lot, but if we do not understand the concepts behind musical notation, we do not even know where to begin. He is also very encouraging and guides us out of mistakes in a way that the logic sticks. Highly recommended - you will enjoy learning with him

Lessons with Mike Mraz was a Christmas present from my son, Andrew. I enjoy singing, yet have never had occasion to study music or to take private lessons. Mike helped me clarify my goals: breath control, vocal mechanics, reading music and having fun. He graciously sent me some primer materials and located sheet music for several of my favorite Broadway show tunes. Our five 45-minute sessions together were both instructive and enjoyable. As I approach age 70, I can check "work with a voice coach" on my "Bucket List." Kudos for Mike!

Learn to read, write and perform on the piano. Play simplified versions of your favorite songs while making your way through Alfred's basic piano library. Using software, I create recordings of my students exercises; students experience an enjoyable way to practice and develop their skills playing along with recordings. These recordings are made and adjusted specifically for each learner. The software allows me to tailor a practice session specifically for each student.

Michael C. was eleven years old when he began to play the electric bass guitar. He decided to get an electric bass because it was the one instrument needed to start a band among his friends. In addition to playing the electric bass, Michael enjoyed time practicing on the guitar and piano in high school. Transferring the knowledge and finger technique to the guitar came easy because of the similarities between guitar and the bass. And growing up with an upright piano in the house always lead to tinkering and eventually became a proficiency after college. In 1996 Michael enrolled at the the Philadelphia University of the Arts. He was awarded a presidential merit scholarship and a university grant based on his entrance audition. During his studies Michael was recruited for a student ensemble also know as Metagroove. During this time Michael
had shared stages with guitarist John Scofield, Singer Ike Willis (Frank Zappa Band), Medeski Martin and Wood and The Disco Biscuits among countless others.

C. has completed a Master of Arts in music education as well as Bachelor of Music in bass performance. Michael is qualified to teach on bass, upright bass, guitar, drums, piano, voice and a rare instrument called steel pan (steel drum) among others. Michael performs as a freelance musician. He can be found performing regularly at private parties and events around the greater Philadelphia area. He has performed playing most styles and genres of music. Among these styles are Pop, R & B, Blues, Hip Hop, Jazz, Calypso, Flamenco, Latin, Pop, Musical Theater and Rock & Roll.

About Maria
At a young age, I found my passion through playing and listening to jazz and classical music and experiencing the interpersonal connections music creates. From performing to teaching, I love to share my passion for music with those around me.

Since graduating from Temple University with a B.M. in Music Education and Jazz Studies, I have played with musical groups in Europe and recently became a K-8 general music teacher in Philadelphia. Playing and teaching around the world and at home has given me great insight into how students need to be taught: with relevancy to their own lives while maintaining artistry and integrity.

My teaching experience ranges from private lessons and jazz workshops to summer music camps and K-12 music classes. I love teaching and will probably never stop!

tant to solidify the foundations of music, so that the student can grow into a knowledgeable, expressive musician. My lessons are taught with a personal and energetic approach leaving the student excited and eager to further explore music. I always make sure that the student is having fun!

Learning an instrument is all about personal growth as a musician. I will help my students become better musicians week by week as long as they are willing to practice and come prepared for the lesson.

Maria is my first sax teacher and i loveeeed her. She is extremely patient, and knows how to teach (which is so important). She also inspires me for jazz solo pieces. I remember one time she just asked me to improvise and great music was "forced" out of my horn.

She is a great teacher and I would def have kept taking lessons from her if not she moved out of town. I am really hoping that she will return and do lessons with me again.

While I don't have firsthand knowledge of Justin's trombone teaching skills, I am quite familiar with his talent for and love of teaching through my work with him as an organizer and a trainer ever since we met in 2010. Justin is great at interacting with people of all backgrounds and ages, and has utmost patience for absolute beginners. In piano lessons my goal is to not only give students a knowledge of the instrument but also a love for music and playing. In lessons we will learn how to read music and the basics of music theory while also learning fun songs. For younger students I like to use fun teaching aids as we learn music theory to engage their attention and make learning enjoyable. I also seek to get to know my student's musical interests so that as we progress we can include fun songs into our lessons like Disney songs, popular music, or church music.

I am a classically trained pianist and Carnegie Mellon graduate. I have studied with renowned and respected pianists and educators, including Norman Krieger, Tereza Lee, Sergey Schepkin and Ralph Zitterbart. My goal is to pass on what I have learned from them, creating a synthesized approach that addresses your or your child’s needs. Moreover, I want to help you or your child build a foundation for playing the piano well, which involves learning fundamentals such as note reading, music theory, ear training and technique. Finally, and most importantly, I want you or your child to have fun playing the piano and making music!

About Josh
Josh Levitin began studying piano at age 16, an age generally considered late for a new piano student. Almost immediately, his teachers found that he had a natural ability to play the instrument at a high level. Tereza Lee, at the time a graduate piano student at the Manhattan School of Music, was Josh’s primary piano teacher and mentor, and helped him prepare for college, university and conservatory auditions. At age 18, after playing the piano for only two years, Josh received offers of admission from six conservatory programs to study piano performance, most notably from the Manhattan School of Music and Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh.

Josh chose to attend Carnegie Mellon, where in 2009 he was one of only three piano students to gain admission to the University’s School of Music. That same year, Josh became a Hadar Scholar,
receiving financial support from the Richard and Mica Hadar Foundation to pursue his undergraduate music studies.

Josh graduated from Carnegie Mellon with University and College Honors. He also received a merit scholarship to study with pianist Sandra Shen at the Brevard Music Center in Brevard, N.C., where he studied for three summers, and performed solo and collaborative piano repertoire. While there, he studied further with Indiana University Jacobs School of Music professor, pianist Norman Krieger. Josh’s teachers at Carnegie Mellon were Sergey Schepkin and Ralph Zitterbart.

Josh is currently on the faculty of Church Street School for Music and Art in Manhattan, where he teaches piano, and Dan’s Music Studio in West Orange, N.J, where, in addition to piano, he uses music as therapy to help students with disabilities.

Josh also offers private piano lessons. Josh reaches students in New York City, and Essex and Passaic Counties in New Jersey.
