Hello! My name is Rubina. I have been playing the piano since I was 3 years old and the violin since I was 8. I have taught students ages 3-80. It is never too late to start learning to play the piano/violin! Every lesson is customizable. Learn to play your favorite pop/Disney/holiday/tv film songs! Whether it is to prepare for school orchestra auditions, learn to play Happy Birthday/holiday music for your family and friends, for fun, or all of the above, every lesson is customized for you!

Teaching music has always been a big part of my life. I first started teaching piano because my mom was a piano teacher. Starting at the age of 10 I was already assisting her by helping the younger students practice. By the time I was 14 whenever she was unavailable I would step in for her. As for violin, my high school teacher was a wind player and was not familiar with the violin and I actually ended up teaching the orchestra class. I started teaching in classrooms since I was in high school and loved it ever since!

Rubina B. holds a Bachelor of Music Degree from the New England Conservatory, a Master of Music from Hogeschool voor de Kunsten Utrechts Conservatorium (Netherlands) , and a Master of Musical Arts from Yale School of Music in Viola Performance. She is very passionate about helping students take the first step in starting their musical journey. She has been teaching violin and viola privately and in school classrooms for 14 years and piano privately for 10 years. She was awarded Yale School of Music, The Malcolm L. Mitchell and Donald M. Roberts Class of 1957 Prize, which is given to an outstanding graduating teaching artist in the Music in Schools Initiative. She currently lives in West Haven, CT with her husband, who is also a violist, and her 2 cats Walton and Bartok. In her spare time she loves to cook Korean food, garden, and swim at the beach.

Any size keyboard welcome! 

This class is for students with little experience playing the piano. For a faster pace please check out the Play-a-thon for advanced beginners classes.


At the start of each class students will learn how to play with step by step instructions. Students will learn the note names and the placement of the fingers on the keyboard. A great chance to improve your reading skills. Every class we will learn a new song that could range from classics, jazz, Disney styles, and more! 
It will be a piano marathon with many different genres!

If this is your first time, you can follow along with the finger numbers and those that have experience will have an opportunity to improve their sight reading skills!

It is recommended to use the biggest screen you have to read the music.

**All you need to know before class starts is:
for both hands...

thumb = 1st finger
index = 2cnd finger
middle = 3rd finger
ring = 4th finger
pinky = 5th finger

Optional - Its helpful if you get a washable marker and write out the numbers on your fingers.

Intro to Piano Play-A-Thon

Rubina is great! She's super helpful, patient, and encouraging. She is very responsive, and flexible with her schedule. She moves at my pace and is great at assessing my skills and gauging what I need from my lessons. I highly recommend her to anyone just starting out, or those who have prior experience but would like more formal training.

She was also super helpful with troubleshooting my camera/device issues, and even sent me youtube videos to assist with getting the right setup.
