I have been a performing musician for almost 20 years and teaching for over 10 years.  I consider myself a multi-instrumentalist, my first instruments were the drumset and piano and I began studying guitar in my teens.  

My love of music has led me to study a wide range of subjects, but my primary teaching these days is focused in intermediate classical music or rock/pop/jazz styles. I tend to help steer students towards a learning path based on their goals and experience.  I strongly believe that there is no single path to becoming a good musician, so I've worked hard to be flexible in how and what I teach.  I'm just as comfortable teaching Bach and Beethoven as I am teaching The Beatles and Foo Fighters.

One thing that is common among all my lesson is a strong foundation of music fundamentals: sight reading, rhythm, basic theory.  I focus on building skills that will last a lifetime in addition to learning your favorite songs.  Students who build a solid foundation learn much faster and retain much better!

Lessons are fast paced but thorough and always friendly and encouraging. I use a wide variety of materials, method books and play-along tracks - I have also written two instructional drum books which I use frequently with my drum students.

In this workshop, we will take a deeper dive into guitar techniques.  Recommended for students who have been playing guitar for a few weeks to a few months.  The techniques covered will help you learning more challenging techniques including chords, riffs and even some simple solos!

Topics include:
-Pentatonic Scales, Blues and Major Scales
-Barre Chords, 7th Chords, tricky chords
-Hammer-ons and pull-offs
-Picking technique
-Intermediate strumming patterns
-Time keeping

This class is not for first time guitar players, some experience necessary (Basic open chords, a few riffs or a few songs).  The emphasis is on technique and not songs although we may play some parts of songs for examples. Bring your technical questions to class, discussion and participation is encouraged!

I have been teaching guitar to students of all ages for over 10 years.  Guitar is such a popular instrument and there are so many options available to learn, so I try to be very dialed in to my students' personalities and goals to make sure that they are feeling empowered learning, not intimidated or bored.  A good guitar teacher is far more valuable than a YouTube lesson because a teacher can give you specific feedback on common mistakes: fingering, hand/arm mechanics, tone, time/rhythm and more; All of which make the difference between being ready to play in your bedroom versus playing in a room with other people!

In addition to learning all the classic guitar songs and riffs, I tend to focus on fundamentals: building a strong foundation of tempo, rhythm, and basic reading/theory skills. This foundation serves two purposes: It greatly increases the student's ability to learn new material (as opposed to 3 months for one song, then starting over on another song) and it gives the student long term/lifelong musical skills.  Once you build a solid musical foundation, you'll be able to continue learning and growing on the instrument at any time in your life.  Many adult students of mine tell the same story, "I learned two songs when I was a kid and I've been playing them for 15 years and never learned anything else."  I strive to make all my students MUSICIANS as quickly as possible while also keeping things fun and quick paced.

Within the first few lessons you should expect to be able to play a couple classic beginner riff songs and chord songs and within a few months to a year you should expect to have several full-length intermediate songs under your fingers.  I love helping students grow, develop confidence and a lifelong love of music!
