Vandell A.

Coppell, TX

About Vandell

Hailing from the "Birthplace of Jazz", Vandell's path to greatness and his purpose in music would not be too hard to find. While studying music at the age of 13 at a local jazz summer camp in the Treme' area of New Orleans, it was there that he learned to play the trumpet. After an entire summer of playing the trumpet at the camp, he was approached by one of his teachers that challenged him by stating his embouchure would work better with the saxophone. Being that this influential teacher was the coolest saxophonist in the world in the eyes of this young, budding jazz musician, Vandell took th
is challenge as a compliment that his teacher would even consider training him on his new instrument.

Soon after cultivating his craft on the alto saxophone, he joined the world renowned St. Augustine "Marching 100" Marching Band. This experience afforded Vandell the opportunities of performing in events and parades all over the world as a member of the prestigious marching band, which would ultimately convince him that performing and playing music was what he wanted to do for a living after graduating from high school.

Shortly after graduation, he enrolled in classes at Southern University at New Orleans, and studied with the legendary Edward "Kidd" Jordan. After a month of studying with Kidd, the catastrophic devastation of hurricane Katrina took the city of New Orleans by storm. At the age of 18, and after enduring the life-altering changes brought on by Katrina, Vandell realized that he wanted to seriously pursue a career in music and began to write original compositions. In just a few short years, this decision has led to him sharing the stage with a vast array of artists, from multiple genres of music, and at venues across United States and Europe. He has also opened and shared the stage with several internationally acclaimed artists and musicians, including Grammy award winning jazz saxophonist Kirk Whalum and the legendary smooth jazz saxophonist Tom Braxton.

In June of 2011, Vandell released his debut album entitled "Years Later”. This album is a collection of original musical compositions that has been written since he relocated to Texas following the aftermath of hurricane Katrina in his hometown of New Orleans. The "Years Later" album, to date, has been getting rave reviews from smooth jazz fans, music lovers and critics across the world. With the success of "Years Later" Vandell decided to release an uptempo 5 song EP called "Turn It Up". Since it's release, the leading single "Let's Ride" has reached #1 on the Billboard Charts!

*** Travel Equipment ***

I've had saxophone instructors in the past, but Vandell is by far the best. He's incredibly knowledgable, patient, and makes the lesson fun. Plus, its really cool to see some of his past gigs and covers on YouTube and know you're learning from someone with legitimate expertise. Looking forward to increasing my proficiency through his teachings.

Marilyn S.

The Colony, TX

About Marilyn

Music Job History:
My music teaching/playing background includes: private piano instructor at home studio, elementary music teacher in Lewisville ISD and Odessa Public Schools, piano accompanist for middle school/high school band Solo Contests, and former church accompanist for Methodist churches. I accompany both Lakeview and Griffin choirs throughout the school year.
Was Elementary Principal at Owen Elementary, The Colony, Lewisville ISD
Personal Information:
Have 3 children, now ages 24, 25, and 27
Love gardening, reading, playing piano, ringing handbells.

I believe performing
is an important part of music learning, so I schedule at least 2 recitals each year. Some of my adults prefer not to perform and that is okay too. I am a member of Carrollton Music Teachers Association and through them there are festival opportunities 4 times a year for those students who are ready to play for a judge!. The more you perform, the easier it gets!

*** Lesson Details ***
I believe that most people would say that they wish they could play the piano. Taking piano lessons keeps you practicing and working on improving your skills. I can always help a student to play better in some aspect of their playing. I break down skills into as small a step as needed so the student can understand what needs to be done. Reading music is similar to reading words, so sometimes the problem is not with the fingers being able to play, but what the student is seeing. I can take whatever series you are currently playing out of and move forward with you from that series.
Rhythm can often be a problem when playing and that usually is just a matter of getting that rhythm into your vocabulary and really hearing how it goes.
Fingering is another area that can be the reason that a passage is not working for you and I can help you figure those areas out. I always try to correct and help you improve by using humor and positive reinforcement. I have several books that work on technique in fun, short exercises that will apply to any songs or literature that you are working on.
We will spend some of every lesson sight reading (looking at music that you will practice at home). Improving your ability to read music at sight will make your piano playing more enjoyable for you.

As with any lessons, the more you practice, the more progress and fun you will have! Every student needs a spiral notebook that we will use to keep track of your lessons. I have found it best if I buy the books you need and then you pay me for the books - that keeps you from having to search at a music store for the correct books and I make sure you have the correct book/levels. If you prefer to find the books yourself, that will be fine also. I am flexible and want your piano playing years to be lifelong for you.

I can teach from any series, have tended to specialize more with beginning and intermediate students. I have taught from almost every series over the years.
Right now I have students in Faber & Faber, Bastien, John Thompson, Schaum, David Carr Glover, Hal Leonard, FJH, Dozen a Day, and Alfred series.
I think that breaking skills down into small steps works well for mastery and understanding. I like to expand my students' appreciation of different types of music, from classical to pop, looking for music that is at the student's playing level.

Merilyn is fantastic!

I am an adult student of Marilyn's and played the piano for 10 years growing up. I came to Marilyn wanting to start playing again after not playing at all for 7 years. My experience has been wonderful and I am surprised at how quickly I'm picking it up again. This is mostly due to Marilyn's positive feedback and constructive instruction. She is laid back and easy to work with and my experience playing as an adult is much more enjoyable than when I was younger.

I have taught acting to small children, teens, and adults in community, private, and collegiate settings. I taught acting at the legendary Lee Strasberg Theatre Institute in New York City. Michael is an encyclopedia when it comes to guitar. We are working on theory, and he just knows it from A to Z. He is patient. Explains every detail when I ask for the minutiae. He inquired what I wanted to learn, and he formed my lessons around my goals. But it has an organic feel in that what i initially wanted has changed as I understand more. He moves in that flow and adjusts our target in lessons.

But what is most important is he is not an adversary when it comes to lessons. In the past I have taken lessons and it was the instructor's way or no way at all. Michael's lessons are like hanging out with a friend who is a great guitarist that is willing to share his knowledge.

I look forward to lessons.
