About Tracey
I've been singing, performing, songwriting, and studying voice for 20 years. I attended Berklee College of Music, where I studied Voice/Vocal Performance, and earned an Associate of Arts Degree in Vocal Performance from Musician's Institute in LA. I've been teaching since 2006, and work with a wide range of contemporary genres with a focus on rock, pop, country, folk, Americana, R&B, blues, and soul. I like to take a "back-to-basics" approach to voice by helping students develop the core aspects of breathing/breath control, correct vowel placement/vowel tuning, and a focus on muscle memory as it relates to stretching the cords. I've been told my approach is simple yet effective, and a unique blend of classic concepts with a practical/modern approach to getting in tune with one's own unique voice. Currently a gigging musician and songwrite
r in SF, I am in the trenches alongside many of my students, which gives me a unique perspective and empathy for the many stages of personal and career development as a musician. I have a lot of first-hand experience with the music business and what it means to manage a band and a DIY-career. Another area I specialize in (and which is probably the nearest to my heart!), is performance anxiety. Having overcome performance anxiety myself and gone on to be a bandleader and gigging musician, I have a close relationship to this and take a special interest in helping students overcome their own fears and anxieties, identify their own voice and identity as a singer, and taking the steps to develop that.

Mostly, I aim to debunk the mystery that the voice can be shrouded in, and change it from being elusive and temperamental to something that students can feel in control-of and at-ease with. I've taught a wide range of students, from young kids to a Marine (true story!), so am comfortable dealing with an equally-wide range of goals and voices.

*** Lesson Details ***
Well, my students tell me that I have the unique advantage of "being young/in touch with the real-world of the music business, but with real professional training and chops." That's about as good as I could have said it, I suppose! I like to pull from all the different facets of my experience and background to inform me as an instructor: formal education and training, as well as my first-hand experiences with my own band, my own struggles with performance anxiety, and my discovery of my own voice through the very methods I now teach to my students.
What that means for you is that rather than focus on a rigid set of rules, we'll focus on your voice and custom-fit a program that is built from solid vocal technique coupled with specific tools to help you develop your own voice and style. I do truly believe in building a solid foundation for you to build your voice upon, but am unconventional in that I believe the best way to learn to sing is by breaking down what is actually going on in there- in a way that students can understand and interpret themselves. Nerd alert: Vocal technique can actually quite liberating and fun! Yes, we will teach you how to breathe correctly; yes, you will be singing scales. But the key is that you'll know why you're singing each note, and what is going to get you to sing those notes more effectively. I believe in hard work because the voice is a musical instrument; but I also believe in making it easily digestible and fun.

In our lessons, you'll learn how to breathe correctly, test your vocal range, and start working on strengthening your head and chest voices to achieve some continuity in your range. We'll also develop the mask and what I like to call your "vendor voice." Oh yeah- it's good stuff. You'll have warm-ups and scales you can use on your own time to get ready for a gig or to continue strengthening the muscles.

*** Specialties ***
I have experience with a wide range of styles, but my main genres of focus are rock, pop, Americana, country, blues, soul, and R&B.
I specialize in vowel tuning/correct vowel placement as a way to strengthen the muscles of the voice, in order to correct pitch/tone and solidify muscle memory as it relates to the voice as instrument. I teach from a "ground-up" approach, meaning I feel it's crucial for my students to understand how their voice works, why it works in certain ways, and how they can use vocal technique to their advantage as singers and performers. Building upon that strong foundation, I customize a program for each of my students to address their own set of strengths and challenges.

I had my first lesson with Tracey today and I can't wait to take more! I'm a person who likes knowing how stuff works, why we may do something a certain way, what I should be paying attention to etc etc, and I love that she is willing to break everything down and explain in a very relatable way. She's very patient, easy-going, and despite how uncomfortable it is for me to sing in front of others, she made me feel like she's truly there to go along the journey with me, to improve and discover my voice with no judgments. Tracey is the best!

About Frederic
I have been teaching cello for over 10 years. I grew up in Switzerland and stayed there until my Masters' degree, then went on to study at the University of Southern California (Doctorate of Musical Arts 2015). I recently moved to the Bay Area, where I have had the chance to play with renowned local ensembles (Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra, American Bach Soloists, Voices of Music, Ensemble San Francisco, Chamber Music Silicon Valley amongst others). Although I love all music that involves cello, I especially enjoy exploring new repertoire as well as discovering old works on period instruments. Sharing my passion brings me a lot of joy, and teaching has become an essential part of my life.

Cellists of all ages and levels are welcome!

About Todd
I have been playing and studying music for 30 years and performing for 20 years. I teach a variety of styles including rock/pop, jazz, country, and classical, as well as how to compose and improvise in a variety of settings. I can show you the in's and out's of the equipment used with electric guitars including amplifiers and effects, as well as teaching instrument maintenance and modifications. My teaching approach revolves around getting new students to make music as soon as possible, even with the most basic skills, to build confidence and ensure a continued interest in learning. I emphasize the internalization of the physical aspects of playing through repetition and progressive exercises customized to the individual.

Practicing very slowly, learning to use a metronome, shorter but more frequent practice sessions, and plenty time f
or free play, are some of the concepts at the core of my teaching style. My strong communication skills are used to dispel any mystery in the instrument, how it works, and making music with it. No matter the skill level of the student, there is always something new to learn or a new way to approach the instrument. I have extensive experience with music production technology including equipment, DAW software, and recording techniques, incorporating these into your lessons if you're interested. I am also versed in synthesizers and sound design.

My lessons are always customized towards the individual, but stress the ability to make music even with very little technique. Building on simple riffs, easy chord changes, and practicing slowly to instill confidence and keep students interested. I often incorporate popular Beatles or Taylor Swift songs to teach chord changes and song form. Working on reading music for piano students and tablature for guitar as well as lead sheets for both. I can also show you how to interpret "cheat sheets," those lyrics with the chords above them that you get from the internet, that are always a little bit wrong.

Having finally reached a place where technique is no longer a hurdle to making music is a reward equal to the amount of time and effort that was required to reach this level of proficiency. I find great joy in showing people of all ages that music can be life-enriching, expanding one’s appreciation of the arts, providing opportunities for new friendships, and creating a sense of accomplishment with every new song learned or skill acquired on a musical instrument.

About Erik
I am currently an undergraduate student in engineering and music at Stanford University

MUSIC:

I currently study with Stephen Harrison of the Ives Quartet and SF Contemporary Music Players. I have been principal cellist of the Stanford Symphony Orchestra and Philharmonia, as well as a member of the Stanford Collaborative Orchestra. I have also appeared in many other recitals and shows on campus.

Originally from Menlo Park, I studied with Sara Styles and Irene Sharp, and was a longtime member of the El Camino Youth Symphony. I also participated in music festivals including California Summer Music, Interlochen, and the Tanglewood Institute, where I was principal cellist of the orchestra. I won both the Palo Alto and Los Altos branches of the California VOCE competition and placed fourth in the senior instrumental solo category of
the United States Open Music Competition.

In high school, I occasionally tutored my peers. Later, my teacher (Prof. Harrison) started deferring prospective students to me. I have worked primarily with adult beginners and intermediate high school students, though I am willing to take on anyone who is self-motivated and ready to learn. I try to break the complexities of the instrument's technique into individual tasks. I then assign repertoire that exercises these tasks individually, allowing students to build up intuitive expertise without losing focus.

MATH:

So far in college, I have taken many of the introductory engineering courses (vector calculus/solid mechanics/etc.) and maintained a 4.0 GPA. In high school, I received several departmental awards, regularly won CA Math League contests, and attained maximum scores on seven AP exams as well as the level two SAT subject test and math portion of the SAT.

I also spent two years volunteering at an after-school program sponsored by the Boys and Girls Clubs of the Peninsula.

About Gwendolyn
I'm an opera singer with seven years of stage experience in Germany and the US, including top houses like the Deutsche Oper Berlin, the Komische Oper Berlin, Konzerthaus Berlin, and, since moving to the Bay Area, I have worked with Opera San Jose and Lamplighter's Theater. I have a MA in singing from the University of the Arts (UdK) in Berlin, and I have taught others to sing since 2014.

In addition to that, I teach people the voice and stagecraft to feel at home in their bodies and command the room with their voices while giving presentations. I have given seminars teaching scientific researchers in Berlin and Potsdam, helping them to present results in ways that are both informative and inspiring.

I am also a 200 Hour Yoga Alliance Certified Yogalign teacher. It is a sort of yoga that combines breath technique, self-massage, and yoga
according to the body's biomechanics. Yogalign teaches the body how to come into natural, functional, comfortable alignment and strengthens it to stay there. I use it while teaching voice, but I also love to teach it on its own.

I am fluent in German, having spent two intensive summers at the prestigious Middlebury College Language School, getting top training in the ins and outs of German grammar. That preparation, the tricks and tools I learned there, paved the way for the fluency I acquired while living in Germany for ten years. I am happy to help beginners learn the tools I learned to help get them on their way auf Deutsch.

Students in each area can expect to progress steadily week to week, provided they do the assigned exercises in between. The voice, the body, and language skills are all muscles we must train daily to expect any progress.

I look forward to working with creative students who have a passion for self-discovery and honest self-expression. Let's have fun!
