About Nicholas
Hello.

I'm a cellist - conservatory graduate - offering cello lessons. I teach a wide range of students from young children just starting the instrument, to adults picking up the cello as a second instrument, to teenagers working on advanced repertoire.

I emphasis natural, effortless playing, which I explain in simple, easy steps. I also work to help each student discover their own musical voice through singing and other approaches to feeling and expressing music.

As a performer, I've played everything from classical recitals to baroque chamber concerts to recordings with songwriters. I've performed with Boston Ballet and other area orchestras and regularly perform solo and chamber concerts. I also have some experience with improvisation, arranging, and composition.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I can provide some sheet music, t
hough students usually purchase music books and pieces eventually. Otherwise, a cello, bow, rock stop, and rosin, and we're all set. I can help guide the purchase or rental of any equipment.

About Denise
I'€™ve always had a love for music. When I was 8 years old, I taught myself how to read music before my first piano lesson because I was so excited to learn. I continued taking piano lessons throughout my school days and became involved in choir in high school.

When I began college I decided to study business. I auditioned for choir and realized that my dream was to become a music educator. I graduated from Point Loma Nazarene University with a Bachelor of Arts in Music. I studied piano, voice, clarinet, and music education. I had a lot of experience playing the piano and singing that I decided to learn the clarinet and join the concert band so I could have band experience. I was also involved in hand bell choir and continued to perform with the choir after I graduated. After graduating, I taught piano at various private elem
entary schools throughout San Diego. I also had the wonderful experience of being the pianist and vocal soloist at my church. I am a substitute teacher and have the opportunity to work with students from preschool to high school and am able to use my knowledge of each age group and school curriculum in teaching music.

"Great works are performed not by strength, but by perseverance" - Samuel Johnson

*** Lesson Details ***
Lessons are tailored to each individual student'€™s needs. I think everyone is special and has their own unique way of learning and customized lessons should reflect that. I believe that music theory is important and I include that in lessons. For piano lessons I mainly use Alfred'€™s piano books. In each lesson I will demonstrate the necessary skills in order for the students to feel comfortable in taking the music home to practice. For voice lessons I include vocalizations, vocal technique, and song study.

I want students to have fun with music. I am very patient and I think it'€™s important to encourage and praise students. I hope to instill the desire to learn in each student.

"The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams." - Eleanor Roosevelt

*** Studio Equipment ***
Lessons in the living room, full size keyboard for piano lessons

*** Travel Equipment ***
I provide a portable keyboard.

About Vanessa
A concertizing musician since age 9, I hold a Bachelor’s and Master’s of Music in instrumental performance from the California State University Los Angeles, where I was named the CSU system's youngest to receive a graduate degree. In 2005 I earned a Doctorate of Musical Arts from the University of Arizona, where I was the Graduate Teaching Assistant. I have also been honored as the University of Arizona's youngest doctoral graduate, receiving my degree at age 19.

I have performed as a member and guest soloist with countless chamber ensembles, orchestras, and bands across the United States. Highlights of my international tours include concerts in Shanghai, Seoul, South Africa, Madrid and at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. In addition to playing for such notables as Oprah Winfrey, Maya Angelou, Tippi Hedren, Barbara Sinatra, and
Florence Henderson, I have played as an honorary guest at UCLA, the Colburn School, UC Santa Cruz, for the Japanese Ambassador and Embassy, and appeared as guest artist with the Anderson String Quartet, Barry Manilow, and most recently with Il Divo, as well as made several television appearances. My extensive performing experience means that no matter your skill level, as my student I will have you performing, sharing your music with others, and becoming an artist.

I have been the recipient of numerous awards for both my musical and academic performance, including the Valeria Finzi Memorial Harp Competition two years consecutively, the Sally Casanova Pre-Doctoral Fellowship, and have been named as a Medici Scholar and on the Who's Who Among American Women and National Dean's List. I am also active as a composer, arranger, and transcriber, and have taught for the past 16 years. Teaching has always been a special joy of mine, and I have experience teaching students of every age and skill level. I believe in an individualized approach for each student and love to inspire students with my own love of music and lifelong learning. I have worked as a teaching artist with the McCallum Theatre Institute (with elementary-age children) and an instructor for the Osher Institute (age 55+). With a solid background in Classical masterworks, my technical skill and artistic vision allows for interpretations of a variety of music spanning Celtic, Latin, pop, jazz, and rock genres. I teach piano, harp, music theory and musicianship at Mt. San Jacinto College, music history at College of the Desert and provide private instruction from my studio in Palm Springs.

*** Lesson Details ***
What do you want to learn? If you are passionate about music and interested in improving your skills I will mentor you to help you achieve your personal goals. I will personalize our curriculum depending on your experience level, needs, and desires. I believe in a well-rounded approach so we'll focus not only on leaning the notes, but the inflections and expressions of music, performance techniques, technical dexterity, music theory, and music history. In this way not only can you be a skilled performer, but an informed one as well, no matter what your age. My students are my highest priority- I love working with children, introducing them to music for the first time, as well as with the adult student who "always wanted to take lessons" but hasn't been able to yet. Furthering the talents of experienced musicians is also a pleasure. I will be honored to help you in your musical journey!

*** Studio Equipment ***
Studio: quarter grand piano, pedal harp, Celtic harp, electroacoustic harp. There is an adjacent seating area so parents are always welcome to sit in on lessons.

*** Travel Equipment ***
Under special circumstances I am happy to travel to students who have their instrument and related equipment.

*** Specialties ***
I teach both Classical and popular styles and can specialize according to my students' needs/interests.

I am an adult student, new to music in general. I have been taking harp lessons with Vanessa for about 10 months now and she is absolutely wonderful. Vanessa is extremely knowledgeable about harp, music, and pedagogy. She is also very patient, helpful, and flexible. Vanessa is professional without being stuffy and I always look forward to my lessons! I feel that I have progressed so much and wouldn't have been able to do that without Vanessa.

With over 20 years of experience as a musician, piano teacher, and music director, I am able to explore all aspects of musical theory and make the piano an enjoyable and exciting instrument to learn to play.

My lessons will be rhythmically exciting, and never boring. I always have book lessons as well as personal musical pieces that the student would like to work on. I most often will incorporate ear training in all of my lessons without being obvious about it, as well as performance. I believe it should be music that speaks to the heart.

Not only will students achieve their goals in learning to play their favorite song or actually play well, they will find a peace and a calm in freely exploring the art of music. Whether they find it to be an escape from it all, or their future with a musical career, it shall be achieved.

D
id you know that a troubled child can find rest and recovery from getting involved in the arts, especially that of the piano? Did you know that as a remedy from feeling despair and hopelessness, the piano is a proven healer? Wouldn't you like to play a song to a friend or a neighbor and make them feel better today? TAKE PIANO LESSONS!!... YOU ARE ON YOUR WAY...

*** Studio Equipment ***
Living Room: 3 pianos (upright piano and 2 digital 88 keys weighted). Microphones, amps. Music stands, additional seating for parents.

*** Travel Equipment ***
A piano, or at least a 40-key keyboard instrument that has depth of sound. A good quality instrument, because if not, they will lose interest.

I have a Roland-88 key traveling digital piano instrument. This can go wherever I go. I also own a Technics Digital piano that has all sound capabilities and recording features. I also own an Howard or Baldwin Upright piano, which plays beautifully for those getting to know a true piano sound and control of its pedal.

*** Specialties ***
contemporary gospel, jazz, show tunes, semi-classical

I taught Daniel at the Art Institute and I have to say he is one of the most thoughtful and engaging students I've had in my classes. His dedication to tutoring greatly benefited the audio department as a whole and elevated the work of the entire student body. I knew when my students would go see Daniel for tutoring because they would come back to class with a better understanding of the subject matter and bring interesting new ideas to the class discussions. Highly recommended!!

About Teresa
I am excited to have the opportunity to teach piano lessons to students who want to enrich their lives by learning this magical instrument! I can say with 100% confidence that I can customize an individual course of 'study' that will make it possible for ANY student to quickly and easily play piano utilizing methodology geared toward the student's own particular learning style.

Music is a language that, once the basics are understood, is simple to become fluent at. I, myself, began taking piano lessons when I was 12 years old and continued studying music in college where I studied piano pedagogy (teaching) and commercial recording arts in Southern California. Combining the traditional formal training I received in music theory, technique, composition, and performance with the ART of improvisation and 'playing by ear', I have developed
a method that makes it fun and simple to learn how to master the piano!

I look forward to interacting with many students here at Takelessons.com---including YOU!
