How to Get the Most Out of Tutoring

Do you study for hours, only to get poor grades? Do you ever feel like you just can’t learn? You’re not alone, and you shouldn’t let yourself get discouraged. Luckily, for every struggling student there are resources available that can help you put your test-taking woes behind you. One of the best ways to conquer your academic struggles is to look to a tutor for help.

Committing to tutoring lessons is a great way to take action to improve your academic standing. Just remember, signing up for tutoring is only the first step. Here’s how to make the most of your tutoring sessions:

  • Be Prepared. First of all, you’ll want to arrive to your tutoring session on time and ready to learn! Bring all of your books and supplies to your tutoring session that you would bring with you to class. If you’re working on graphing equations, you’ll want to have your graphing calculator, or any other tools you normally use in class. Your tutor will be better able to help you learn if you have everything you need at hand. Also, don’t forget to bring your notebook. You will want to take notes at your tutoring session just as you would if you were in class.
  • Give Your Tutor All the Info. If you need help with a specific assignment, be sure to give your tutor all of the details your teacher has given to you. For example, if you’re struggling with writing a paper, give your tutor a copy of the prompt your teacher assigned. This will help your tutor understand what is expected of you. Once your tutor understands what your teacher is looking for, he or she will be better able to guide you in the right direction.
  • Be Active. Don’t expect your tutor to do all the work for you. Your tutor is there to steer you in the right direction and answer any questions you may have, but ultimately it is still your responsibility to complete your assignments. You will gain so much more from your tutoring sessions if you are prepared to put work into your time with your tutor.
  • Speak Up. Don’t be afraid to ask your tutor one million questions! There is no such thing as a stupid question, especially when you are working with a tutor. Your tutor is there to answer any questions you have, no matter how small, to make sure you really understand what you are studying. Additionally, if you happen to know your learning style (ex: visual, auditory, kinesthetic, etc), don’t hesitate to let your tutor know. Your tutor wants to see you succeed, and if their methods aren’t working for you, it’s totally okay for you to suggest other tactics that have proven effective for you in the past.
  • What Would My Tutor Do? When you’re faced with a difficult problem in class and your tutor isn’t around to help you, ask yourself how he or she might tackle that problem and you might just surprise yourself by getting it right. Your tutor isn’t just teaching you how to write one paper or solve one equation. Your tutor has excellent study skills and habits of thinking. These habits are what make your tutor successful, and you can learn them too. Watch how your tutor approaches subjects that are difficult for you, and begin to apply these processes to your work even when your tutor isn’t around.

Enjoy your time with your tutor and don’t worry about not having all the answers yet. Your tutor will be able to help you get ahead, and the more you follow these tips, the more you will get out of your tutoring sessions.
