About Me

I have been studying music for eight years now. Having come to music rather later in life than most, I find that I am more empathetic to the perspective of the beginning student than many teachers. I spent the Summer of 2009 teaching music fundamentals to groups of severely physically and mentally disabled children of all ages. Since then I've completed my Bachelors degree in Music, and have taught privately to several students.

To me, music is above all about transformation; yes, beautiful sound transforms our experience of the environment, but learning an instrument transforms the very way a student learns. Learning to play an instrument is an experience of training one’s nervous system to gradually act and respond in new ways, and that kind of persistent, focused, training is applicable to anything.

Playing music is also fun and cathartic.

*** Lesson Details ***

I plan my lessons around getting students to enjoy playing music as soon as possible, whether that means learning how to strum a chord rhythmically, their favorite song, or how to take a blues solo.
There are steps that have to be climbed to do more complex things and I encourage students to practice a little every day rather than for a long time once or twice a week. Developing a love of music and steady practice habits are more beneficial over the long term than practicing until your limit.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Living room with upright piano, guitars, amps, and music stand. Street parking available, and parents can sit in on lessons with waiting area available as well.

*** Travel Equipment ***
If necessary I can provide amplification, cables, a guitar (for the first lesson), and a microphone.

*** Specialties ***
Jazz, Folk, Blues, Rock, Hip-hop, Funk, Reggae.

About Me

I have been studying voice, guitar, and piano since age 12 and received my B.A. in Music from Skidmore College. I am an active professional singer-songwriter, guitarist and pianist. My music has been featured by Rolling Stone, SPIN, and USA Today, and I have performed at major venues across the country, including Joe's Pub (NYC), and The Hotel Cafe (LA). I am infinitely passionate about sharing my life's love with young and beginning musicians. Looking forward to meeting you!

*** Lesson Details ***
I will tailor your lessons to be what you want them to be. They can be fun and laid-back, focused and highly structured, or a little bit of both. My teaching methods include emphasis on scales, arpeggios, and exercises to build proper technique. I then bring this technique to the study of songs in a genre of your choice (pop, rock, jazz, classical, or anything else). I am trained in the Italian Bel Canto method of singing and can incorporate those methods into your singing program if you wish. If you are a parent looking for lessons for a very young beginner, I will provide lessons that are light and fun, so that your child will stay engaged, and most importantly, get excited about music!

*** Travel Equipment ***
Students must provide a guitar for guitar lessons, or have a keyboard or piano in their home for piano lessons. For voice students, I would prefer if they have a keyboard or piano in the home, but if not, I can bring my guitar to accompany them.

*** Specialties ***
I specialize in pop, folk, and rock, but also have extensive training in classical and jazz, and can incorporate any of these genres into your lessons.

About Me

Over the past few years, I've studied with Modern Guitar Greats such as Jonathon Kreisberg and Mark Dziuba.

Currently, I'm gigging around the Hudson Valley with several Jazz and Rock Groups. You can catch me playing every Sunday from 2-6 at the Cafeteria Coffee House in New Paltz.

Skype Lessons are OK

*** Lesson Details ***
Lessons will involve building song repertoire, and exploring how to connect ideas aurally, visually, and mentally.

Teaching, like jamming, should be a conversation. I look forward to learning as much from you as you do from me!
