I hold a B.A. degrees in Music and Spanish from San Jose State University, and have 15 years experience in teaching and performing.
My musical palette encompasses Jazz, Afro-Cuban, Brazilian, Symphonic, Opera, Reggae, Funk, Rock, R&B.
I am very fortunate to have shared the stage with many masters in the Jazz and Afro-Cuban/Salsa scenes, notably: Karl Perazzo and Jeff Cressman (of Santana), Louie Romero (Hector Lavoe and Wille Colon) Wayne Wallace (Wayne Wallace Quintet) the famous salsa vocalist Tito Nieves, Cuban-born vocalist Fito Reinoso,
legendary Bolivian charango player Eddy Navia, Bolivian guitarist Gabriel Navia, Eric Rangel y su Orquesta America, Julio Bravo y su Orquesta Salsabor, and the Pacific Mambo Orchestra.
Besides music, I enjoy salsa dancing. I have been dancing for ten years and have been teaching salsa dancing for three years. I also believe in furthering my communication skills. I belong to my local public speaking Toastmaster club for 2 years. I also enjoy art very much and have been drawing as a hobby for three years.

I have been teaching piano for almost 40 years. I have a NY state music teachers license, a masters in music therapy from NYU, and a bachelors in Music Education and AFFA certification.
I try to keep the student self-motivated by using music that the student likes, as well as covering the basics. I use props which can be internalized by the student and gradually removed. For example, using stick-on letter names for the notes for a beginner and then removing them one at a time when the student feels ready.
I am friendly and very easy going; I'm not a disciplinarian. If a student doesn't practice for some reason, we practice together at the next lesson. If a student doesn't want to practice at all, I can be very creative in motivating them. I don't believe in parents forcing their children to practice, because this tends to turn the child off. Even though I tell parents that if your child doesn't want to play, please don't force it; I tend to keep students for many years (maybe it's because the student's self-motivation is so important to me and to their success).
I also have a lot of experience teaching handicapped individuals as a certified music therapist.
The music therapy has enabled me to be a better teacher in general because the therapeutic aspect comes up in all lessons, in one way or another. Music educators focus on the educational goals of music, while music therapists focus more on the therapeutic goals . A therapeutic goal might be increasing concentration span or self-confidence. These issues often need to be addressed in all lessons, and can only help the learning process.

I started playing music in the fourth grade. My first instrument was the
cello. In fifth grade I changed my instrument to the violin and found that it was definately something I wanted to persue. A year later I started
on the piano, and unlike the violin, I found that it was easier to learn it on my own. Because of that, my knowledge on the piano has been mostly self taught. I have been playing both instruments going on 16 years, and even though I did
play other instruments, nothing took center stage like the
piano and violin.
Although I have never played in the Boston Philharmonic or London
Symphony Orchestra's, nor have written or composed any CD's, doesn't
mean I don't have a passion for what I do. To me, music isn't just about playing in a large orchestra or being famous. It is about recognizing the many different styles from cultures all over the world. It is the ability to appreciate the sounds the reverberate across the spectrum, the ability to mix and match in order to create something new, and to think outside the box when it comes to inventing new ideas. To me, music is a form of art (just like dance, drawing and writing), and just like any form of art, there must be a spark of passion behind it, or it becomes meaningless.

I feel there is a great deal of talent in the youth of today, and that it is my job to provide a knowledge and understanding of how to best use that talent. I try my best to provide a comfortable atmosphere to help my students to develop, refine and heighten their talents. I love to teach performance techniques in voice, music, dance, and various other fine arts activities. I have been an aspiring performer my entire life and have enjoyed every learning experience I have come across. It is because of this that I feel I can help you reach your full potential. It is my goal to share my passion for performing arts with others so that they might become excited about their potential and future. I hope to empower others with the knowledge of using there instrument properly and efficiently so that they may utilize their talents to their fullest potential. Through lessons with me my students will enjoy and flourish in using their talents and become confident in doing so. Both learning and performing should be fun and exciting and that is what my students should know, that I am here to have fun and to help you embrace your natural talents and use them with ease and comfort.

Though I am your teacher I am also a fellow performer. I understand that everyone learns differently and I try to take various approaches to help the student get the most out of each lesson. I encourage my students to be open and honest with me about each aspect or their lesson so that we can, together, tailor a lesson plan that best fits each individual.

With a Master's Degree from Union Theological Seminary & a Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages Certificate (TESOL) I am here to take students to the next level in their learning. I have four years of teaching experience. I've tutored Math, Science, English, Creative Writing, History and Social Studies. Additionally, I've taught Creative Writing at Los Angeles School District High Schools. Not to mention I've taught College Level Philosophy online.

Li Bloom holds a BA in Theatre Arts, Dance from the University of California, Santa Cruz. She has worked as a dancer, choreographer, & teacher throughout the US and in Canada. She's a visual artist; author/editor of four poetry books; media performance artist currently working on her first film project. Teaching and tutoring children in creative movement, fundamental guitar, theatre & literature arts is her passion. She also teaches yoga and dance fitness classes for adults.
