I have only received 3 lessons so far and all have been a wonderful experience. I am not a professional singer nor have I ever had any lessons singing. I simply just want to learn 1 song to sing to my future husband. OJ has made every lesson fun while I am learning and I know in time I will reach my goal.

Fun, Easy to Work with

This teacher has an easy, fun loving spirit. I have learned important tips to improve my singing, such as, to name a few, where to place my tongue, the importance of enunciation, and scaling from high to low notes without breaking. I would recommend him as a teacher.

Great Teacher

Throughout my life, I have been singing in Gospel choirs and for years, I have been an alto. After meeting with OJ, he helped me find my voice. He was able to determine my vocal range and I found out that I was never an alto, but a lyric soprano. I was so shocked, but excited at the same time. I thought that was amazing because he helped me discover my true vocal range. OJ is knowledgeable, patient, and fun to work with.

Profile
I've been teaching piano for over 13 years. I use Alfred's Premier Piano Courses levels 1 - 6 for children. For adults I use Alfred's Lesson Book 1 - 3. My teaching goals for all my students are to enable them to read and make music so that they could experience the joy of journeying in the realm of musical sounds.
My philosophy in teaching piano is very much like learning to drive a car. Once a person learns the mechanism of driving so many possibilities open for the person to enjoy trips to many places that bring pleasures that destiny could offer. In some ways, playing the piano is very much like learning to drive a car. Once the mechanism of making music is mastered, the possibilities of making journeys of musical sound is endless.

Heather is the very best of the three piano teachers I have had! I have made more progress in the last year with Heather as my teacher than I had in the two previous years with other teachers. Although I am an older student and take longer to learn, she has been patient and supportive. She never makes me feel incompetent, in fact, she is extremely complimentary of my efforts. Her positive attitude makes me want to work harder and to play better. And she is such a nice person to be around - gentle, polite, and friendly. I am having a great experience and highly recommend her for anyone who is learning to play or to improve their playing.

Taryn K. Baltimore, MD

I mainly work with the "Piano Adventures" series for beginner students. For more experienced students, I try incorporate classical music while also focusing on music that accommodates to the interests of the individual.
I believe that strong technique and basic musical knowledge are both important in creating well rounded musicians. With that in mind, I incorporate technical exercises, such as scale work, as well as music theory into my lessons.

About Taryn

I am a University of Hawaii Piano Performance Major with a training emphasis in classical piano. I have taken multiple AMEB piano examinations, as well as performed in various recitals, culminating in an undergraduate music certification. I have been playing for 15 years, working with a variety of musical and performance styles, including individual performance, accompaniment, and musical collaboration. These experiences have given me the skills to tackle and communicate musical themes and ideas to students with a range of learning styles and needs, from beginning to advanced, classical to leisure. Taryn has done a great job teaching our 5.5 year old boy who loves music, but has lots of energy. She is patient and persistent with great teaching skills. She has been flexible with timing when we needed it. She uses the Faber and Faber My First Piano Adventure which is an excellent set of books for the pre-reader and early reader and also very affordable. We appreciate Taryn setting our son's musical foundation.

Taryn is responsive to my objectives and brings creativity to the task.

I'm a guitarist with 35 years of semi-pro and professional experience, with the ability to sub on simple keyboards parts. I chose Taryn from the available group of piano teachers because of her classical training. Her background is important because my goal is to acquire correct technique and become proficient at sightreading. Taryn understands that an adult student, especially one with previous performing experience, brings a perspective that's different from a child's, or from an adult with no previous experience. She communicates well and is appropriately flexible when required, but firm in her adherence to teaching the fundamentals that will help me accomplish my goals.
Grace L. Baltimore, MD

Grace Is Tops!

By the end of May, I will have been working with Grace for six months. During that time, I have learned so much! I now feel I understand how to attack a new piano piece, and I am slowly gaining skill in executing it. My love for the instrument has simply skyrocketed!

Grace has an amazing skill set. Not only does she possess expert knowledge of the piano, but she exhibits that unique ability to convey her knowledge to others, in a straightforward, engaging, and often humorous manner.

Each lesson fires me to learn more and more, and I am very happy with the results!
