Music has been my passion in life for as long as I can remember. When I was very young, I would listen to my mother play the piano and after she was finished, I would climb onto the bench and attempt to play what she had just played. Then when I was twelve, I started playing piano with my mother during the church services, then moved to play the organ a couple years later.

I grew up in a small town in Nebraska, and I jumped at any chance I could get to play the piano. I first taught myself with old piano books, then took several years of formal lessons and became the go-to person people would contact for anything piano. In high school, I accompanied the choir and show choir, played in the band and jazz band, performed solos, concerts, and accompanied vocal solos for the District Music Contest. My senior year I was the sole accompanist for this contest.

Born in Boston mass I am a DU educated pianist comfortable in any Jazz, Rock, or Classical setting but find my first love is the bluesy rollicking piano reminiscent of Jerry Lee Lewis, Dr. John, or Ray Charles. You might have seen me around town in my Salsa group, Jazz trio, Funk band, Gospel choir, or as accompaniment to any of the extremely talented singers I have worked with. I'm also a composer and songwriter with a sardonic songwriting style compared to Mose Allison and Dave Frishberg.

I attended the University of Denver’s Lamont School of Music and graduated with a B.M. in Jazz and Commercial Piano. Not only have I studied intensely with local fixture Eric Gunnison, but also with internationally touring artist Gerri Allen and even with jazz legend Billy Taylor at a summer music institute in Amherst, Mass. I've been playing piano since I was 6 yrs. old, and guitar and organ since I was 13. I've been able to use music in so many ways, and that is the opportunity I want for my students. From singing in school and church choirs, to accompanying and directing them, I've had a lot of enjoyable experiences. I've had the fun of performing solo and with bands, and have been teaching music for about 25 yrs, both privately and in the schools. My BA is in music education and my Masters is in individual performance. I've taught K-Jr College music classes in general music, chorus, piano, guitar, and theory. I think my favorite form of teaching is still one-on-one lessons. Working with one student allows me to adjust my teaching to their particular learning style and needs.

For as long as I can remember, music has played a large part in my life. By the age ten, I already knew that music would be more than just a hobby for me, it would become my career. I have been singing for over 20 years, and began playing piano when I was eight years old. I received a BS in music industry studies with an emphasis on business, from the University of Colorado Denver in 2008. I have extensive experience in performance and the music industry as a business, and have had the pleasure of experiencing the local music scene first hand while playing in bands. My name is Alan M. and I have been teaching drums privately since my senior year of College while attending the University of Colorado, Boulder. Many of my students are still playing today.

I have also taught in the public schools. Having taught General, Instrumental music for over 10 years. This gives me a unique perspective at what is being taught in the Public and Private school systems.

My professional experience has included playing in local productions of musical theater. I also have done many private engagements from Jazz quartets, Big Band, and Orchestras.

I have loved music almost all my life. I began my lifelong journey to immerse myself in learning piano at age seven. At thirteen, I added violin lessons as well. By the time I reached high school, I knew that music would be my major in college, and that music would always be a vital part of my life.
I played violin with my high school orchestra, including taking part in productions of Fiddler on the Roof and Anything Goes. I also played piano with the orchestra, and performed the first movement of Grieg’s Piano Concerto in A minor in concert. I played the piano for my school’s top show choir as well, performing with the group throughout the Denver area. I was also a member of the Colorado All-State Orchestra. All this time, I continued my private lessons in both piano and violin.

I am a multi-instrumentalist currently finishing my Music BA in Voice at CU Boulder. I have played in several different ensembles in the Boulder area on a variety of instuments including Ukelele, Guitar, Bass, Piano, Voice and Drums. I grew up partly in Hawaii and have a love for island music, Reggae, African Highlife, Jazz and Funk. My classical training in combination with my experience as a song writer and band leader gives me a uniquely well-rounded teaching style. My goal is to inspire students to use music as a platform for learning important skills such as diligent practice, cognitive flexibilty, and creative expression.

Coming form a musical family, I cannot remember when music was not a part of my life. Both my parents were musicans, my father an instrumentalist and arranger and my mother a fine pianist. From the age of seven they encouaged and assisted my music education any way they could. Music came first in our family. My school years were spent in band, marching band and jazz band. During my high school years I took over the local elementary band and taught begining band to the students after the band teacher had left before the school year finished.
To pay my way through college I taught piano, organ and band instruments in rural Colorado, even using a horse to get to my students when the roads were closed. I am an experienced teacher who has taught students of all different levels and ages. My students receive classical training on the piano or cello. I understand that a passion for music is the critical ingredient for musical development, and I pass my own love for music to my students. I teach my students to be diligent by having them use practice logs to record their progress. My students learn to understand the musical material and how to practice it at home. I especially focus on learning to read music in my lessons because it is a very important skill.

As I attended the Lamont School of Music at the University of Denver, I took classes about how to teach music to others. I bring this knowledge and expertise into my lessons.
