About Me

Learning music, especially at a young age, can have a positive impact in life. From simply playing music in the home to performing music for large audiences, the basic goal is the same: the enjoyment of being a proficient musician. I have written a bit about my experience and how I can use this to help you to become a great musician.
I began studying music when I was 8 years old. My early lessons taught me not only about music but about music teaching. As a result of these experiences, I vowed to teach students music that is meaningful to them.
Moving along, in high school I played in rock bands with my friends. I can never stress how important it is to play with other people. I always encourage my students to form bands, join music groups in school, or just find a friend to jam with. Not only does this raise the level of musicality, it is a great motivational tool.
After high school, I studied music at Colorado State University, where I focused on jazz performance, theory, classical performance, and double bass pedagogy. I earned a bachelor of arts in music from Colorado State University in 2000.
I have been a musician for 16 years. I have played rock, pop, classical, jazz, and electronic music professionally for over 10 years. I have performed in the U.S. and Europe with many talented artists, and I have won various awards in performance and academics.
Although I enjoy a busy professional career in music, I am extremely committed to teaching the young and casual learner as well as career oriented individuals. At this stage in my career, I am enthusiastic towards the education and development of talent.

My home studio is fully equipped with guitars, basses, keyboards, amps, and digital recording equipment. I am highly knowledgeable in audio and midi recording through the use of recording software.
Apart from music, I have been an English teacher for eight years. I recently completely work my Master's degree in music theory. I look forward to sharing my skills and experience with you or a member of your family.

*** Lesson Details ***
My lessons usually follow the following steps:
Presentation of material Instruction Practice Performance
In a typical lesson, we may take a look at a piece of music through an audio or video recording. After we listen and/or watch, we discuss and examine the music. For example, this could be as simple as saying, What do think about this part? It could also be more in depth - What's the time signature? Next, we focus on a specific part to learn. The student learns by watching demonstrations, making attempts at playing it, and listening to suggestions and instruction. Just as there are many ways to teach there are also many ways to learn. I try to incorporate as many different methods as possible while being mindful of different learning styles to ensure that the student is successful. Finally, when the student has become sufficiently proficient on a piece of music, we'll play it together as a team. Sometimes, I accompany a vocalist on guitar to get a pop/rock feel. For my guitar or bass students, I trade between lead and accompany roles. I may bring other accompanying instruments to the lesson for a different vibe. The idea is to have fun playing music, and I like to have fun.
People often ask if I am strict or laid back. I am neither. We work hard, but we'€™re also so focused and motivated that the time flies by before we know it.
Lastly, I never ask my students to copy anyone. I encourage my them to be original. The music I give them is only a guide. The goal is to motivate them to play what is in their hearts.

Acoustic Guitar, Arrangement and Composition, Audio Engineering, Bass Guitar, Composition, Ear Training, Guitar, Music Performance, Music Recording, Music Theory, Songwriting

About Me

Andrew is a Philadelphia area bassist, guitarist, composer, sound designer, audio engineer, and teacher. As a recent graduate of University of the Arts with a MM in jazz studies, Andrew has had many opportunities to study with some of the best musicians that Philadelphia has to offer. Andrew performs in a variety of styles from rock to jazz and R&B. For Andrew, music is the most fun a person can have and this idea is the foundation for his instruction. Andrew aims to inspire his students, in the way that his great teachers have inspired him. He emphasizes improvisation, confidence, versatility, good habits, a strong foundation, and the concept of music as a language.

*** Lesson Details ***
Though I cultivate a laid-back atmosphere, I take music and teaching very seriously. I expect beginners to put in an honest effort, and expect more advanced players to be enthusiastic about the material I give them, and to give it the time and attention it deserves. Ultimately, a student will only get out what he or she puts in. It can and should be fun, (and if It isn't, I'll figure out a way to make it fun.) Students will learn to be creative every time they play. They will learn to interact with others (musically) and to rely on their ears and intuition. I try to focus on producing a well-rounded student who can play with emotion and spontaneity, yet has knowledge of music theory, history, convention, and other essentials of a more academic nature. I cater to the student's interests and tailor my lessons to the student's specific needs.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Home: studio with music stands, guitar/bass amps, music library and materials, keyboard, recording mixer, guitars (acoustic & electric), electric bass, fretless bass, upright bass, and computer with various music software, and a wipe off board.

*** Travel Equipment ***

*** Specialties ***
I specialize in Jazz, Rock, Pop, and Contemporary music.

Michael C. Philadelphia, PA

Subjects Taught

Bass Guitar, Guitar, Music Theory, Percussion, Piano, Singing, Songwriting, Upright Bass

About Me

Michael C. was eleven years old when he began to play the electric bass guitar. He decided to get an electric bass because it was the one instrument needed to start a band among his friends. In addition to playing the electric bass, Michael enjoyed time practicing on the guitar and piano in high school. Transferring the knowledge and finger technique to the guitar came easy because of the similarities between guitar and the bass. And growing up with an upright piano in the house always lead to tinkering and eventually became a proficiency after college. In 1996 Michael enrolled at the the Philadelphia University of the Arts. He was awarded a presidential merit scholarship and a university grant based on his entrance audition. During his studies Michael was recruited for a student ensemble also know as Metagroove. During this time Michael had shared stages with guitarist John Scofield, Singer Ike Willis (Frank Zappa Band), Medeski Martin and Wood and The Disco Biscuits among countless others.

C. has completed a Master of Arts in music education as well as Bachelor of Music in bass performance. Michael is qualified to teach on bass, upright bass, guitar, drums, piano, voice and a rare instrument called steel pan (steel drum) among others. Michael performs as a freelance musician. He can be found performing regularly at private parties and events around the greater Philadelphia area. He has performed playing most styles and genres of music. Among these styles are Pop, R & B, Blues, Hip Hop, Jazz, Calypso, Flamenco, Latin, Pop, Musical Theater and Rock & Roll.

C. is a trained professional and prefers to cater his lessons to the individual need of each student. He believes that each student is unique and will encounter challenges in their own manner. Michael likes to supplement his lessons using musical interests of the student. C. has been known to arrange popular pieces for recital performances for his students. Some of the pieces he has arranged for his students include Something in the Way She Moves (Beetles), Long distance Run Around (The Who), Iron Man (Black Sabbath), That' €™s What Makes You Beautiful (One Direction), Hall of Fame (The Script) among many more. Michael encourages his students to use the music they love to challenge their ability and cognitive processes. Michael has the experience and training required to inspire and motivate you to become successful not only in music but in your daily endeavors.

About Me

Hello there! Thank you for checking out my page.

This is the first step in beginning or continuing a creative journey that will not only make you a better artist but a better person, as participation in any art will do. I am all about finding out how music and theatre and film and, really, any artistic medium can help us communicate better, unveil new perspectives, and foster a more open, generous, accepting, and passionate relationship with the world around us.

I've been an artist in many different capacities spanning many different mediums including theatre, film, and music as a director, actor, and writer. I received a Master's Degree in Theatre Arts from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, and a Bachelor's of Science in Film and Television from Boston University. As a musician, I've played guitar, piano, mandolin, and sang in touring college bands, city church choirs, high school jazz bands and select choirs, and a plethora of school, community, and professional musical theatre productions. I've also taught guitar (privately and in groups) and led acting/text workshops locally and abroad. My most recent adventure was while I was abroad in Scotland. I wrote and directed a play, "Said the Wind", which was performed at The Arches, Glasgow, and was subsequently taken to the CrisisArt Festival at the Accademia dell'Arte in Arezzo Italy.

As a native of Doylestown, I'm happy to be back home for a while and am looking forward to teaching!

GUITAR LESSONS
I am taking students at any age experience level, from those who want to learn the fundamentals of music through the guitar, to those who are looking to develop their sense of play and experimentation to better write their own music. First, we'll get to know each other so I can get a sense of your goals, interests, and current abilities. Then, utilizing musical literacy, tablature, learning-by-ear, and improvisation, we'll develop your skills to the highest possible level. I do not specialize in any particular genre or style. Rather, I've learned to specialize in flexibility. The most important thing is to know your instrument inside and out and all that it can offer by way of creation. After that, it's simply about enjoying it.
**I currently do not have an extra guitar available so it is important to provide your own instrument. On that note, taking lessons is only part of the process. The other critical part is practice, so I encourage anyone who is interested in guitar lessons to buy one of your own in order to do so. A simple acoustic guitar like a Yamaha is perfect for your first guitar.

THEATRE AUDITION PREP
These lessons are suited to those who want to develop their ability to enter an audition room with confidence and charisma and get the job or role you've prepared for. The most important thing to remember about auditioning is that the people behind the table want you to be the right person for the job as much as you yourself want the job. These lessons will be most useful to those auditioning with a monologue or cold reading sides. I can also be of assistance with musical theatre audition songs. If you are not working towards a specific audition, we can work on broad spectrum auditioning and mock auditions. These lessons are available to any age and experience level.
**I can work with those who already have pieces in mind that they'd like to practice on as well as those who need help finding a monologue or a song.

If you'd like to BOOK AN APPOINTMENT please contact me via email at alex.schneps@gmail.com or call (215) 272-6549. Thanks!
