About Me

I harness years of music teaching in diverse settings (including four years' private studio plus three years as a choral director and two years as a music instructor with homeless youth) for a diverse studio meeting real artistic needs. I also am a fluent and experienced Spanish tutor, teacher, and interpreter and offer effective, individualized Spanish tutoring at your convenience.

Highlights from my career include:

* Professional singing and playing experience in diverse settings (opera stages, pubs, churches, you name it)

* Intensive and well-rounded musical training at renowned Brigham Young University in clarinet and voice (earned BM in vocal performance, 2007), including coursework in piano/keyboard, music theory, pedagogy.

* Choral music conductor experience (four years volunteer instructor) allows me to offer a broader view of instrumentation, developing your voice/instrument in a group, and establishing a presence in the music community

* Mental health, domestic violence, and disabilities direct service work as an advocate, caseworker, support group facilitator, and center director (2007-2012). Broad yet intensive experience in social services enables holistic and effective guidance with the huge array of physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual issues and nuances that affect musical development and performance (bodily tension, working through nerves, motivation, stress relief techniques, goal-setting, life changes and music, disorders support, etc.)... Basically, a life music coach at your beckon call, if that is what you need.

About Me

Hey!

My name is Kyle S. and I'm incredibly passionate about music education for all ages. Over twenty years of playing all instruments has taught me there is not one specific way to teach music, so I change my curriculum for every student and completely customize what you learn to how you learn, and what you're interested in. I started teaching music lessons in after school programs when I was eleven and fell totally in love. I continued to do this for many years driving to neighboring towns, volunteering at church youth groups and local Boys and Girls Club all around my hometown.

I went on to study Music Education at Oregon State University and Guitar Performance at the University of Oregon and Jazz Performance on Guitar at Portland State University! At each of these Universities I taught students my age as well as locals in each town and have been supporting myself entirely through music since 2008!

In Portland I've been gigging, playing on records, recording music for films, and volunteering every week at Nonprofit Music Schools around town to help underprivileged kids, and expose them to the joy of music. Give me a call and we can talk about what you're interested in, and get lessons started.

Look forward to hearing from you!

*** Lesson Details ***
I'm fairly laid back, and teach from a number of different texts depending on the interests of the student. Each student is different, and I vary instruction accordingly. I have a lot of experience songwriting, composing, and playing as a sideman in groups on different instruments. I've been part of bands led by myself and been hired by other people, as well as composing for different groups of instruments from trios to full orchestras.

If there is interest, I can also provide worksheets based on the curriculum and standards held by the University of Oregon, and Portland State University.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Private home studio equipped with a many guitars, a piano, a Wurlitzer, electric bass and amplifier, two drum kits, and a beautiful kitty.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I can provide guitars, amplifiers, and notebooks for all students even if they do not own guitars or amplifiers. I also make copies and email attachments of all homework, and record lessons and send them to students to listen to when practicing.

*** Specialties ***
I've been playing and studying guitar since I was seven years old. I've attended Berklee School of Music summer workshops, camps, seminars, and presented music theory papers at conferences at the University of Oregon. I can and am willing to teach any type of musical style or interest to any skill level!

About Me

I have a Master’s in Opera Performance from the Boston and New England Conservatories as well as graduating from Vocal Performance programs at Boston University and Western Washington University. I have sung professionally with Boston Lyric Opera, Children’s Theater Companies, churches and synagogue and have toured on the east coast as well as Athens, Greece. Premiering new music is a specialty - I can help you prepare your pieces for auditions.  My students have successful auditions for college opera and music theater programs, and as choir soloists.
Students gain a larger vocal range and an easy, natural way of singing whether it is in a rock band, choir or as a soloist. Together we find the joy of singing while building a solid technique.

I also work with small children as a Musikgarten teacher and have toured artist residency programs which introduce children to music and theater in schools.   I was adjunct faculty at the College of St. Benedict/St. John’s University, local music studios as well as maintaining my private teaching practice.

*** Lesson Details ***
I am persistent and positive! Having worked and performed with singers and master teachers has helped me to be a resourceful teacher who understands the process of becoming a singer. I believe that a sense of fun and play helps you to accomplish your goals quickly.  For beginners you will learn how the voice works and how to care for and develop your instrument. We will choose music that interests you and helps to build your voice moving from simple to more complex and challenging. Understanding music theory and sight-reading will help you get the most out of your singing. After 3 - 6 months you should have a good command of breathing and an understanding of how to sing with an expressive tone. For the advanced student, I can help you work on trouble spots and give you tools to help with the changes that voices naturally go through.  I look forward to giving you my full focus and celebrating your growth and accomplishments!

*** Studio Equipment ***
Condo w/ open area with f/w keyboard with a visitor's parking lot w/ seating for parents. Parents with younger siblings can use play areas outside.
Basic library of vocal music, giving the student a way to sample different kinds of songs before purchasing books or downloading songs on their own. Music stand, iPhone plug-in/Amp for accompaniments and examples you want me to hear.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I provide a basic library of vocal music at my home studio and will bring targeted books with me. Students should print out their favorite popular songs from such services as Music Notes website.
I expect my students to provide a keyboard, music stand and notebook as well as a low distraction environment.

*** Specialties ***
As an opera and musical theater, Oratorio and church singer, I help singers of all levels improve within their genre from popular music to opera. A good singing technique will help performers in any style stay healthy and enjoy an expressive singing instrument.

About Me

Hello:
I have been a guitar and voice instructor for over 15 years, and a piano teacher for 3. I have currently added beginning violin and ukulele. I have also tutored elementary students and worked for Montessori's for many years. I really love this job! I had a real hard time learning guitar when I was growing up because of an accident to my left arm, but I wanted to play so much that I was able to overcome it. Because of this, I think I have learned to be a very patient teacher. I see students who get frustrated and think that it's too hard to play the guitar, but I promise you my program is fun and simple. I can show you the steps to success. I have taught over 500 students in a variety of cities from Minneapolis Minnesota, to Los Angeles California, and now Portland Oregon. I have had individually and group taught over 28,000 lessons in that time, so I have dealt with every kind of person including those with disabilities. I am currently obtaining my Masters in Music education and Psychology from Marylhurst, and I have taught every age from 5-70. I am also a performer, and I own my own music publishing company through ASCAP (American Society of Composers Authors and Publishers). I currently teach Piano to level 3, so if you are a beginner, you will love my new program. Music is my life, I can help you make your dream of playing a musical instrument come true, even in a few short lessons. You can do it!

* I hold recitals twice a year in May and November. Check out my videos.

*** Lesson Details ***
The thing I have learned over the years teaching guitar is that everyone learns differently. I have taught in family situations where there are two or three siblings learning at the same time, but each sibling learned the skills that are unique to them. Some students are better at playing rhythm, some students are better at lead, some students are better with barre chords. As long as you are enjoying playing the guitar, you will be able to grow in every area at your own pace. Music should be a fun and rewarding experience. My lessons usually include songs that you like to play and are at your level of playing ability. We can play as a band too. When you are ready, I love to bring out the drum machine while you play guitar and I play the bass notes, giving you the feel of a live group situation that can make learning at your lesson more fun.But if that's not for you we can just play guitar together too, whatever makes you feel the most comfortable is how you will be able to learn the best. Tell me what you need I am always here to help you.

About Me

I teach vocal technique to recording artists, singers interested in starting or
joining bands, people looking to do musical theater, do some opera, and anyone
who just wants to sound great around the campfire.

My students learn how to embellish the things they like about their voices and
make them sound unique, while at the same time defeating tension and poor vocal
technique. I also work on shaping the whole performer, from stage presence to
microphone control.

My instrumental students work on both classical and modern music. If you are interested in learning how to read music, chords, charts, compose or just learn some basics I am happy to help you with that.

Optional recitals are held two times a year.

I have a Bachelors of Music, Vocal Performance at the University of Oregon
and have been teaching voice since 2002. I have sung in The U of O Opera
Ensemble, Eugene Symphony Chorus, The Oregon Bach Festival Chorus, The Dahoo
Chorus, Emily Post and Opera Theater
Oregon. I have featured with The
Salon ensemble, Trashcan Joe, The March Fourth Marching Band, Sophe Lux, and
The String Cheese Incident

*** Lesson Details ***
I tailor lessons to my student's individual needs and musical desires. I
attack lessons from a classical background of correct breathing and body
control, and from there add the inflections of rock, pop, jazz, indie, metal,
musical theater, etc on top of your voice in a way that you will be able to
sing for years and not hurt yourself.

I believe lessons should be fun and encouraging, other wise there is not
desire to continue. I understand that learning how to sing, just like learning
any new instrument can be difficult, frustrating and time consuming.

*** Studio Equipment ***
I have a piano and guitar in my detached studio, this ensures being able to make new sounds and not have to worry about people overhearing anything.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I expect student to have a small keyboard or piano.

*** Specialties ***
My degree was specialized in opera and art song. However my niche in Portland has been teaching people in rock bands. From Indie, blues, jazz, to metal, and pop. I also an extremely proficient in classical forms such as opera and art song, and teach some musical theater.
