I teach reading rhythms, playing with a bend and how to groove!
I have taught private guitar, piano, bass and drum lessons since the late 70s in Salt Lake City, where I majored in jazz guitar performance, and since 1980 in Los Angeles. I make the lessons fun. Some of my students have received college scholarships and won cash prizes for music contests. All of them had fun while learning and improving on their instruments.

I am very enthusiastic and can teach students how to read. If they do not want to read music, they can learn to play by ear. I can also show them where to put their fingers. During piano lessons, I often accompany students on guitar and suggest a scale for improvisation, so they can play the blues. During drum lessons, I often play bass so they can learn to groove.

I want to make sure my students have a good time learning drums but I also want to make sure they learn a lot..! I always make sure to ask my students what they want to learn and what their favorite music is... after that, I figure out what type of lessons to plan out.
Thanks so much for starting music lessons with me. I’m so excited to share my passion for music with you! As Lao Tzu said: “Music in the soul can be heard by the universe”.
My main goal as a teacher is to help my students reach their goals. If my student wants to learn how to play rock, hip-hop, and jazz drums I believe that it's my job to teach them how to play those styles..! If my student wants to get accepted into a music school I will make sure that they are prepared for an audition whether it is for orchestral percussion, jazz drums, rock drums, etc.
The equipment I have in my studio:
Drum set, marimba, timpani, concert snare drum, electric and acoustic guitars, guitar amplifier, 88-key keyboard, maracas, shakers, tambourine, ...
Ryan has excellent range as a drum instructor, and has had success teaching all levels/styles, and all ages, as young as 3 years old! Ryan can teach non-western styles as well, in particular the challenge of adapting these rhythms to the drum set. Ryan also has professional experience singing and drumming, which is a unique skill to possess, whether for backing or lead vocal situations.
Ryan started his music with piano lessons at age four while lending his vocal talents in the recording booth for his musician/writer/ arranger father, Rick. Ryan was playing in piano recitals by age six, segued from keyboards to drums at age 14, and was subsequently accepted into the University of California, Santa Barbara percussion program after high school.
While an undergraduate at UCSB, Ryan spent three years as the principal timpanist for the UCSB Symphony and five years as timpanist with the UCSB Wind Ensemble. Concurrently over the same five year period, he performed with a diversity of UCSB ensembles, Orchestra and Jazz combos, work with the College of Creative Studies department (CCS), and a variety of recording and recital work in and outside the university. Drumset only. I can teach students a variety of basic drum grooves in a variety of styles and can help students understand how to incorporate fills into their playing. I can also teach reading basics.
I have been happily playing music for over half of my life and it has always been the light in my day. Now it is my hope to shed that same light onto you or your child. I am a very friendly and fun teacher with a great deal of professionalism and patience, even more importantly I love teaching and music with a passion.
I have been playing an instrument since the 4th grade (cello) and, as I learned how music works, was slowly able to pick-up a greater variety instruments with an increasing degree of ease. In high school, I decided to pick-up the guitar just to "have fun and rock out". I joined a band, played in the high school orchestra, joined the high school jazz band and began to practice songwriting and cover songs. Still, it was not until after I took my first class on ...
When you study drums with me you will gain my vast knowledge of music & drumming, and the ability to play a variety of styles at the highest level. I'm one of the top "100 Greatest Jazz Drummers" in the world and I was voted #4 Jazz Drummer in Modern Drummer Poll in 2010.
Alphonse musical associations read like a veritable Who's Who of Modern Jazz and Pop Music. His talents cover a broad range of musical disciplines and philosophies. He was the rhythmic foundation for the far reaching musical explorations of pianist McCoy Tyner. He was a charter member along with keyboardist Joe Zawinul and saxophonist Wayne Shorter, of the group Weather Report. Along with guitarist Larry Coryell, Alphonse was co-founder of The Eleventh House, the seminal fusion band of the seventies. Alphonse and Coryell still tour together in a trio and with the Eleventh House.
Alphonse has also played and/or recorded with Gil Evans, Roy Ayers, George Benson, Herbie Hancock, Dizzy Gillespie, Stanley Clarke, Al DiMeola, Les McCann, Ronnie Laws, Klaus Doldinger's Passport, ...
I can teach beginner/intermediate drum lessons. Subjects would include groove (all important!), timing, ensemble techniques/dynamics, and reading.
I hold a bachelor's degree in electric bass performance from Musicians Institute in Hollywood. I also have national as well as international touring experience playing for a platinum selling artist with a major label. I also worked at MI as a teachers assistant helping to run performance based classes, as well as helping students improve their chart writing and song writing skills. I teach real world principles in electric bass playing, and am able to teach students that only want to play for fun, or those who seek professional work in the industry.
