Marta Sofia H. is an active performer and teacher of viola and violin in Los Angeles.
Born and raised in Madison, WI, Marta left her hometown early to finish high school at the acclaimed Interlochen Arts Academy where she studied both violin and viola. Graduating with a focus on viola, she moved to Chicago to receive a B.M. from DePaul University, studying under Rami Solomonow (Lyric Opera) and various Chicago Symphony Orchestra musicians.
An avid teacher as well as a performer, Marta has enhanced her pedagogy training by taking Suzuki Method coursework at the American Suzuki Institute, DePaul Community Music Division and with teachers at the Colburn School.
I started playing Viola at age twenty, moving from the Violin. The transition was great because being a violinist you have the technical advantage and speed that most violists don't have.
I have played professionally all around the world from Australia to Europe and to America. The US government recently recognized me as one of the best Violists from Australia and granted me with an extraordinary ability visa. I not only play classical music in orchestras but I also play an electric instrument with DJ's in nightclubs.
I love passing on my knowledge to new students to help them grow as a musician, nothing is more satisfying to see someone learn how to play an instrument and watch them really enjoy the process.
I started my musical career at the age of 2, on the piano, shortly afterwards moving to the violin, and most recently, the viola. Earning the music scholarship at school for best classical musician, and later on the scholarship for best orchestral instrumentalist at the world renowned music conservatoire WAAPA (West Australia Academy of Performing Arts). Earning my first diploma (A.Mus.A) at age 14, my music has taken me all around the world. I've played such places as the Australian High Commission, Rheingoldhalle in Mannhein, Dvorak hall in Prague, Australian embassy in London, Disneyland in Paris, and the opening the Australian embassy in Berlin, all before the age of 18.
I have played in trios, quartets, as a soloist, and many orchestral ensembles playing major concertos, ...
Unlike most violist, who start on violin and switch over to viola, I started from viola and thus play the instrument as if it were my native tongue! My greatest passion is finding violists who have yet to discover the instrument's incredible capacity, so that I can help them see why they are playing the best instrument out there!
After twenty years of violin and viola performance under the tutelage of instructors from the LA Opera, the Juilliard School, the Cincinnati Conservatory, as well as lifelong piano studies, I've come to see that music education is in itself a real art.
I began tutoring (and now teaching) in 2005, teaching my first music students in 2008. I see that success in an instrument lies in tapping into students' passions for motivation and incorporating mindfulness practice for improved concentration. I not only work to help students' musical abilities grow - I utilize this practice as a holistic system for improving discipline, creative capacity and self-esteem.
Though I graduated cum laude from Georgetown University's School of Foreign Service rather than a music ...

What I can offer:
I have played viola as long as I have been playing violin. I love the violin, but the viola has a certain richness about it that I cannot keep myself away from.
If you are interested in learning to play the viola or to advance further in your viola studies, I will do my best to take you as far as you are willing to go.
I have been teaching violin privately and in the classroom for several years now. I am finishing up my education in violin performance, and I will be continuing to a master's degree in violin performance within the next year.
I play violin and viola professionally. If you would like to start lessons, I am available to teach beginning to intermediate/advanced level students.
I try my best to adapt to my students individual learning styles. Everybody is different, and it's my goal as a teacher to have my students reach an understanding for music and hopefully grow to have a love for it as well.
