About Me

I am a professional singer and actor with over 10 years of performance experience and private vocal/acting coaching. I studied acting at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts, and have performed nationally in regional theater, for cruise lines, and several theaters in my current residence of San Diego such as the Lyric Opera San Diego, Old Globe, Lamb's Players Theater and Cygnet Theater. I have taught students from ages 7-adults, and my focus is always the dramatic and emotional aspects of the piece and how to use technique to release that emotion in a healthy and exciting way.

*** Lesson Details ***
My teaching style is passionate and encouraging. I have taken lessons from many teachers and have found what is useful and what only confuses a student. As such, my approach to singing is very simplistic, and often what I will talk about in the first lesson will be discussed during every lesson. Lessons will usually be divided into 1/2 vocal mechanics and 1/2 dramatic interpretation.

*** Travel Equipment ***
Music and acting texts, portable keyboard. Student need not provide anything.

*** Specialties ***
Broadway, classical theater

Voice Lessons:
I tailor each lesson to the individual. I believe in a solid, vocal foundation in order to sing in any style. Daily vocal exercises, breathing exercises, and healthy tone production are the basis for my teaching.
Learning to sing requires knowledge about the vocal instrument and the musculature involved.
Acting exercises are also incorporated into the text analysis of each song in order to fully understand the meaning behind each song.
Each student should record their weekly lessons in order to review instruction and also to help with acquiring accurate listening and pitch skills.
Music should be purchased and brought to every lesson.

Piano Lessons:
I tailor each lesson to the individual. I use a variety of methods: Faber and Faber, Alfred Premier, Succeeding at the Piano. The lessons involve ear training, written theory, rhythm recognition, and songs (repertoire). About Me

Hi everyone! I'm a hard-working musician with a background in live performance, songwriting, composition, and home recording. I want to help you perform the music you love, whether you're playing to your family, your webcam, or a 15,000 seat arena. I have been teaching private music lessons since 2007.

I am a graduate of UCSD, where I completed my bachelor's degree in music theory and composition. I have taken years of private lessons, played bass, guitar, and mandolin in local and touring bands, and released three albums of original music. I want to make your goals accessible.

*** Lesson Details ***
I focus on making lessons fun for my students. I emphasize the importance of practicing on your own and building confidence by performing live and/or writing your own songs. I love to help people get better at sounding like themselves.

During lessons from me, you can expect to play, sing, clap your hands, and become completely immersed in the music you love. Whether your goal is to perform in front of an audience, record albums, or just play for fun in your living room, I'll help you make that happen.

*** Specialties ***
I specialize in teaching confidence in performance practices, technique, singing and playing, and good microphone habits for singing, speaking, and recording, and songwriting. I teach based on student needs, and I find each student benefits from a different curriculum.

About Me

I started singing at the ripe old age of 20. At 26, I have successfully completed two music degrees (Associates and BM) and I sing professionally as a soloist/chorister for numerous choirs and churches around town including Sacra/Profana, Musica Vitale, SD Pro Arte Voices and the San Diego Opera.

I am the founder and director of a brand new choral ensemble called Folklore, pairing professional singers with standout high school students. We perform a variety of music like pieces from video games and sacred songs from the Renaissance era.

I direct a choral program at St. Martin of Tours in La Mesa, Ca where I teach my choir solfeggio, music theory, and vocal techniques to perform a variety of music on a weekly basis. Currently, the choir has an age bracket of 13 - 85 so I am always coming up with ways to relate to different levels of experience and voice type.

I have been playing piano for about three years and it is my main tool for writing music.

At San Diego State University, I majored in World Music so that I could take composition classes and learn more about different cultures of music. While attending, I was a member of the SDSU Chamber Singers, Aztec Concert Choir, and the Javanese Gamelan ensemble.

I have taken private voice lessons under Enrique Toral at SDSU, Ken Anderson at Grossmont College, Martin Wright who is the chorus master of the Berlin Opera and Timothy Todd Simmons who directs the New Orleans Opera Chorus.

In my spare time I like to go on hikes with my dog, dabble in photography, antique shopping, go to the mountains, watch national geographic, and figure out the chord progressions of songs on the radio.

*** Lesson Details ***
Each lesson is an opportunity for both of us to learn about our musicianship. I generally let my students pick the repertoire we work on unless they prefer otherwise. You want to work on a Maroon 5 song? Great. You want to learn a French Aria or a Beethoven Sonata? Awesome, if you're physically and mentally ready for it. I encourage communication between myself and my students in between lessons to keep up to date about progress and encourage practicing (a week apart makes a big difference!)

Vocal lessons will always begin with a thorough warm-up, ear training exercises, and education on how our diaphragm/vocal chords/ head acoustics work together. I encourage music theory and sight-singing in voice lessons but I understand that not everyone is as nerdy as I am.

Piano lessons will always include warm ups on scales and some level of sight-reading. For pop or jazz players, ear training exercises like playing with the radio will also occur in lesson.

My in-home studio includes a 100 year old upright Steinway piano, plenty of seating for parents, a music stand, and plenty of parking on the street in front of my house.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Upright piano, recording studio, music stand, couch and chair for parents.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I can provide a music stand, metronome, a mirror and textbooks. Students should have access to a piano and a printer/ copier.

*** Specialties ***
Voice- Classical, pop, jazz, and R&B.
Piano- Classical and pop
Composition- Choir/ Orchestra, Arranging

About Me

Hello Students / Parents!

I specialize in providing a fun, inspiring and safe space for each student to reach their goals €“ whether that be for the novice singer whose been wrongfully told they €œshouldn't sing,€ the more experienced singer looking to branch out into doing more with their music or doing it professionally, or the budding songwriter, actor or speaker looking to develop the talent and drive they feel within them.

I always remember the encouragement, patience and inspiration I received from my best teachers, and strive to provide exactly that to my own students. I sing and teach most vocal styles, with the exception of opera, and utilize our studio to create a supportive, empowering experience singing, writing and recording. I absolutely love to teach both children and adults and look forward to learning how to best support each one of my students in their individual path toward realizing their potential.

Here's a bit about my background and musical experience:

€ Bachelors of Fine Arts degree (Theatre/Voice) from United States International University €“ Graduated Valedictorian
€ Chula Vista School of Creative and Performing Arts €“ Graduated Valedictorian
Workshops and studying with Bill Doyle, Roy Mote, Andrew Barnicle, Jack Tygett, Leanne Summers, among others.

"After seeing Danielle, I was impressed with her intensity as a performer. Her ability to get behind a lyric was stunning, she lives every line. As an artistic performer, I've yet to see better."
-Tony Ferguson / Interscope Records: No Doubt, Bush, Fisher

My original band, Danielle and The Masses, has been recording and performing live since 2001. We are endorsed by Ani Difranco, The Black Eyed Peas, The Bruce Hornsby Band, and have shared the stage with artists as Jamie Foxx, CAKE, Metric, En Vogue, David Byrne, Berlin, Margaret Cho, Cyndi Lauper, Jonatha Brooke, Beth Hart, Semi Precious Weapons and more.

I have written and performed music and voice over for Ace Ventura, Nutty Professor, VH1, various TV shows and independent documentaries, Eveoke Dance Theatre, among others, as well as having recorded eight professional CDs of various styles on various record labels.

For over ten years, my record / production company, Say It Records has been producing socially conscious music events throughout San Diego and Southern California that promote independent music, film, art, community and human rights. I also co-own Durga Sound, a teaching and production studio, with producer Alicia Champion, as well as San Diego IndieFest, a powerful community event which promotes and supports music, film, art and civic engagement.

I have a great time utilizing my contacts in the industry to help my students get work/ press / entrance into the schools of their choice, etc. For example, I'm happy to report that just last year we were able to book eight musicians on GLEE, as well as lots more in other capacities including using their music in commercials and film and helping them get cast in local theatre and accepted into arts-centered schools.

*** Lesson Details ***
I start on the first lesson by becoming clear about what the new student's goals and desires are €“ from there, we start developing technique to achieve those goals along with having fun right away doing what they came for - singing, writing, voice over, acting or using a combination of these things be it for professional purposes or personal fulfillment. Every lesson is personally customized to meet the specific goals of each student. As a teacher, I'm encouraging and fun, passionate and positive. While I'm definitely not "strict", I do appreciate focus and drive. However, I often work with people who have special needs and are working on developing those very things. I'm especially good at helping people through progress plateaus, roadblocks, stage fright, loss/ stress. Using music as a means of release and healing - for both kids and adults - is something I do a lot of and am very comfortable with.

As far as technique is concerned, I focus on utilizing posture, correct breathing and developing relaxed, strong support, so that the muscles are developed properly and without stress, enabling the student's voice to constantly grow while also steering clear of the injury that can accompany the straining that often happens when singing without proper technique.

I strongly encourage students to record their lessons on a mobile device so they can practice easily on their own, and so they eventually have a record of how far they've grown.
We mostly use tracks to develop repertoire, prepare for auditioning and performances, and to have fun singing the music that excites each student the most.

*** Specialties ***
Using music, writing and voice as a means of expressing yourself, growing as a performance artist, coping in challenging times, as well as a means of going professional and earning income are all areas I specialize in. Utilizing proper technique and learning how to sing / speak safely is also an area I focus on a great deal.

Learning precisely what each student wants is the key factor in my decision on how to achieve their goals. For example, using Speech Level Singing is definitely entrenched in my teaching, but I may not highlight it as much for those who want a more classical sound.

I definitely excel with the following: first timers, very young kids, students working through stage fright, artists looking to develop their own original project, those seeking growth in their process of writing / recording / performing, those who are interested in using music and / or writing as therapy as well as with amateurs who've always wanted to do something musical but who think they are "too old" or too "untalented/short/tall/ fill in the blank" to try. I believe we all have something to say with our lives - finding the voice within you can be an incredibly powerful and transformative experience!
