About Me

Arguably one of the most dynamic emerging vocal producers and songwriters to penetrate the music industry, “Candy” offers a brave, but fresh take on life through song. A native of Washington D.C., Candy studied and performed with the esteemed Washington Performing Arts Society for 7 years and graduated from Howard University with a Bachelors in Fine Arts. She has also trained and studied at the home of Seth Riggs in Los Angeles, which afforded her years of solid experience with Speech Level Singing (SLS), a widely-popular technique created by Seth Riggs and used to coach clients like Michael Jackson, Beyonce', and many others. She's advanced through over 4 years of professional training and performing in Theatre Arts and has also crafted an acclaimed approach to Broadway music and acting for the stage.

Candy is practiced and has worked alongside some of the industry's best as a writer, studio coach and vocal producer. Her clientele includes a growing list of popular performers and producers across national lines. With a range that spans several genres, it is increasingly easy to see why her buzz is growing also. Candy has already worked with some of the most respected names in music including Rich Harrison (Crazy In Love-Beyonce, No One Gonna Love You-Jennifer Hudson), Jazze Pha (Ciara, Cee Lo, T.I.), and James “Big Jim” Wright (Yolanda Adams, Chaka Khan, Mariah Carey, Michael Jackson), having also caught the attention of Missy Elliot and Swizz Beats. The list continues to expand. A 4.0 graduate and well-versed professional, her value is irrefutable.

My approach is student specific. Everyone does not respond to the same teaching style. I will assess where you are vs where you aspire to be and together, we will formulate a plan to get you there. In 3-6 months, the biggest thing you will walk away with is the confidence to explore and perform to your greatest potential, and the understanding that it will grow with you as you do. I am offering methods I've benefited from and acquired across multiple genres of music, each having heavily impacted the other. I am also an advocate for hands on learning! Let's dig in and get to it! Let's also record your lessons on my Protools set up so that you forever have a point of reference.

*** Studio Equipment ***

*** Travel Equipment ***
I expect them to have the ability to take notes in a way that works for them (hand-held recorder, pen & paper/laptop, etc). They should also provide material they would like to focus on or I can provide as well, once discussed.

*** Specialties ***
I gear toward a focus of bringing the student into the moment/lesson and the artist into the performance. It is my goal in every aspect of teaching to help my students find truths to which they can relate and live honestly within. Finding a relatable link between them and the content of the lesson has made all the difference in my learning and teaching experience. I believe honing in on that honesty to be the key to an exceptionally developed craft. My style is defined by the ability to experience each new moment in the now, as you are. In doing so, you open yourself up and become readily available to internalize the nuances of your learning process.

About Me

I am passionate about Music and Music Education. It's rewarding for me to watch my students develop in their musical skill and enjoy making music more and more. My students range from the very young (4 years old) to school age children, to teens, and adults. My students benefit from my expertise in teaching Vocal and Piano music, my knowledge of Music Theory, and my encouraging teaching style. I have been involved in making music since I was a young child, and I have been teaching private students since I was a Music major at the University of Florida in 1982 when a fellow college student asked me to teach her voice lessons. I have a Music Education degree from the University of Florida; my major instrument was Voice, my minor was Piano. I taught as a public school music educator in Florida, California, and Tennessee between the years of 1983 to 1997. I taught private students after school in my classroom while I was a public school teacher, and from my home since 1997. My post-graduate continuing professional education includes Tennessee Arts Academy at Belmont University, Kodaly Pedagogy and Solfege Level 1 (vocal teaching techniques, do-re-mi, ear training), Orff-Schulwerk Music for Children Level 1 certification, Yamaha M.I.E. (Music In Education) Piano Lab certification. My professionalism and expertise are at your service. I will work together with you to insure an enjoyable and informative learning experience.

*** Lesson Details ***
A typical lesson in my studio would begin with a brief question/answer time with the student to learn how their week has gone, and how their music practice is progressing.

For PIANO LESSONS we begin with Technique including scales and dexterity exercises, then we play from the Lesson book and a Recital selection. I typically let the student play through the pieces they have prepared without interruption, then I call attention to corrections that need to be made, I demonstrate the correction, and then ask the student to play the piece again. After that we go over the Theory assignments, and do Ear Training exercises. I am comfortable teaching from a variety of different methods courses. The methods course is chosen according to the student's interest. I never require a piano student to continue using books that are not inspiring. There so many methods courses available, that a student may always be able to have methods books they LOVE.

In my SINGING LESSONS we also begin with a recap of the student's week. Then we continue with Warm Up exercises to prepare the student's voice for the lesson. Then we study Sight Singing and Solfege Singing (do-re-mi-fa-sol-la-ti-do) to increase the student's listening skills. After that the student sings their selections. Like I do in Piano lessons, I listen to the pieces they have prepared without interruption, then I call attention to corrections that need to be made, I demonstrate the correction, and then ask the student to sing the piece again. I am comfortable teaching many styles of vocal music including classical, Broadway, pop, rock, and Christian.

For MUSIC THEORY lessons, the study material is chosen according to the student's interest and age. Topics include notation, chord structure, chord progression, melodic structure, and harmony. I also incorporate Music Listening in the Music Theory lesson in order to learn from the masters in many styles of music. My Music Theory students will also have the opportunity to develop composition and songwriting skills if they desire.

My teaching style is structured and friendly, keeping the student's goals and interests at the forefront. I enjoy motivating students to reach their highest potential.
After 3 to 6 months in my studio my students will see improvement in their musical technique, ear training, music reading, notation, and knowledge. They will be preparing recital pieces for an upcoming performance. I provide two recital opportunities a year: in December, and in May. Most importantly, the student's love and appreciation of music will be growing.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Living Room: piano near front entryway, couch, loveseat, over-sized chair, dining room table, open space, end table with chair, parents can sit in on lesson.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I provide lesson books, the students should provide their instrument.

About Me

I hold a BFA in Dance from New York University Tisch School of the Arts and a BA in French from the NYU College of Arts and Science. I was awarded the Prix d'Excellence from the French department for highest overall academic achievement in my graduating class, and I have maintained status on the Dean's Honor List throughout my college career.

Currently I am a soloist professional dancer in NYC, and teach at the JKO, the pre-professional ballet school of American Ballet Theatre.

While completing my double major, I danced professionally with Cherylyn Lavagnino, the chair of the NYU Tisch dance department, and have been actively teaching French and ballet lessons. Before attending college, I danced professionally with Richmond Ballet and North Carolina Dance Theater.

I have been a ballet dancer for 21 years, and I discovered my love for teaching this art form seven years ago. Throughout my career as a professional ballet dancer I continue to share my knowledge and experience with students of any level in a private or group setting.

My passion for French language began in high school and was fostered during college. I work with students of any level to improve their conversational skills, pronunciation, grammar, and written French.
