I have been in the entertainment business since I was 7 years old, appearing in the movie "Here We Go Round The Mulberry Bush". I did a 4 year degree course at The University Of Hertfordshire in Musical Theater and went on to be a hit songwriter. In the 90's I was signed by Simon Cowell to his record company in London. I also sang back up for Sir Paul McCartney and The Spice Girls. As a teacher, I am supportive and encouraging. Being a singer myself I understand how to maintain my voice amid the stresses of being working vocalist. Students will benefit from my experience and my teaching technique.

I have been told by my students that am as much a coach as I am an instructor. I make lessons fun and informative. I am always respectful and understand that students progress at different speeds.
After 3 months with me students can expect to have better pitch, better breath control and more confidence all round. I use my own curriculum and record each student to CD. This means the student can take the lesson home and continue the learning process there.

Athena has enjoyed tremendous success as a singer/songwriter, actress, musician and teacher. She is originally from Toronto, but is now based out of New York City.

Athena has released 5 CDs, toured North America (both as a singer/songwriter and as an actress), and taught voice, piano, guitar, songwriting and acting for the past 13 years. She has shared the stage Sarah McLachlan and Jim Carrey, and taught songwriting to girls with Lisa Loeb (the teaching project with Lisa Loeb was made into a documentary and premiered at Tribeca Cinemas). Her music videos LOVE IS LOVE and LOGICAL SONG charged #1 on MTV's LOGO TV.

As a teacher, Athena has worked at numerous schools, organizations, and colleges across North America, including Oregon State University, Montcalm College, Manhattan New Music Project, TADA!, and The Ontario Science Center. She teaches privately (voice, piano, guitar, acting & songwriting), and facilitates workshops to kids and adults on topics ranging from "Vocal Technique", to "Booking Your Own Tour", to "Creating Original Musical Theater",She also conducts staff development workshops on "Communication and Socialization through the Arts for Autistic Populations" in New York City schools. Athena teaches all ages (age 4-99) and ability levels (gifted - special needs).

As a singer/songwriter, Athena has released 5 original CDs and numerous dance singles. Her latest full length album, "Little Girl Dreams", was produced by Emmy/Grammy Winning Producer Cynthia Daniels (Melissa Etheridge, Dave Mathews Band, "Producers" on Broadway). Athena's music is storytelling pop with a theatrical twist. She combines a dramatic 4 octave range voice with gorgeous piano and guitar arrangements. She performs regularly in the New York circuit, at notable clubs including the Knitting Factory, The Cutting Room, and Jacob Javitz Center. She has been featured in radio, TV, newspapers and magazines around the world.

As an actress, Athena has appeared in numerous commercials, Film, TV and Off-Broadway productions including Hush (Players Club in NYC and Hudson Theater in LA), Fran in The Day They Shot John Lennon (Redmill Theater), "Tina" in Love Sucks (NYMF Festival) and principle roles on the History Channel and CNN. She won Best Comedy at Canada's YTV Youth Achievement Awards (Judge Eugene Levy). She currently performs as a Lady Gaga Impersonator at corporate events across the country.

Athena's training began with classical piano at age 4, voice at age 8, acting at age 9, and guitar at 16. She began working as a professional actress in Film & TV at age 12, and recorded her first album at 20. She majored in Theater at Claude Watson School for the Arts in Toronto, and earned a BFA in Music from Concordia University in Montreal. She regularly attends master classes in New York, with internationally renowned teachers such as Neil Semer, Kimberly Vaughn, Garry Dial, Francine Kay, and Maggie Maes.

Students can expect to learn through playing. I integrate learning songs by ear with learning to read music so that one develops the skills they need to play with others. I've found that the Faber series works well because it offers student-teacher duets to expose beginners to musical collaboration. We will review theory and technique through scales, technical exercises, and guided listening where we identify and analyze musical tools specific to our weekly at-home assignments. After six months one can expect to know all their scales and be able to read treble and bass clefs. Further down, for intermediate players, we will begin playing with records and improvising over simple songs. Students will start making musical choices for themselves guided by the framework and feedback I offer. As we proceed expectations will rise, but I always seek to maintain a mutual respect between student and teacher that fuels a stronger passion for learning and creating.

As a working singer/songwriter/guitarist, Jeff is known for his memorable melodies, intelligently crafted lyrics and heartfelt vocals. His compositions have earned him over 35 awards from various national and international songwriting contests and he is a former staff songwriter for the long-standing New York City-based publisher, Bourne Music. He has also won best music video awards at two international film festivals.

Some of the artists that Jeff has been compared to as a guitarist and vocalist include Keb' Mo', James Taylor, Kenny Loggins, John Mayer, Bill Withers, Jim Croce, and Don Henley.

Jeff is a NJ native, but lived and performed in Los Angeles for many years, where he worked in the studio or shared the stage with well-known artists such as Dave Koz, Norman Brown, John Daversa, Hiroshima, Little Richard and N'Dea Davenport.

Jeff catalog of over 450 songs and compositions spans virtually every genre, but many of his tunes are amalgams of pop, blues, jazz, R&B, country and rock. Quite a number of Jeff's songs
have appeared in film and TV. One that Jeff is particularly proud of, is the dynamic pop ballad, "Journey Of The Heart" (co-written by Jeanne Smith), which was licensed by the N.C.A.A. (National
Collegiate Athletic Association), who deemed it "the official anthem" of their NCAA Hall Of Champions facility in Indianapolis.

Jeff has commercially released 4 CD's of his original material: The most recent of these is his 2013 release, "Blujanova" (a merging of blues, jazz and bossa nova), which was praised by platinum selling and Grammy-nominated jazz star, Dave Koz: "Jeff's voice is so clean and pure...the production is lovely...warm and inviting...I love the interesting and surprising takes on some classics too, especially 'I Feel Good'…that brought a smile to my face!".
The other CD's stretch into other genres. "Truthteller" (bluesy pop/rock and singer/songwriter material) "Me, Myself, and I" (acoustic) and "The Spin" (pop, rock, and country-tinged singer/songwriter material). All of Jeff's albums are on his label, Relevant Records. John Braheny, author of the best-selling "The Craft And Business Of Songwriting (Writer's Digest Books), gave high praise to Jeff's CD, "The Spin", calling it "honest, crafty, melodic and the songs are all exceptional". Patch.com called Jeff "a consummate songwriter".

At the first lesson, I will ask you to tell me what songs you want to play and artists you want to play like and I will set the table for that by providing the chords you'll need, chord and scales and exercises to enable you to play them and guidelines and tricks on how to make it happen as quickly as possible. I know a wide variety of songs in all styles and styles, including current hit songs as well as pop, rock, blues, jazz, country songs. if you have a song or artist that I don't know already, I will learn it (often on the spot) and if not right then, at the next lesson. I have taught my students to play songs by artists as varied as Taylor Swift, U2, Jason Mraz, Adele, Eric Clapton, Django Reinhardt, Doc Watson. And that's just naming a few.

I always make it clear to my students at the first lesson: "There is no such thing as a stupid question". I want you to feel comfortable to stop me at any time to clarify what I am teaching you, ESPECIALLY if it is too difficult or vague. I pride myself on always being organized for your lesson and making sure that you grasp whatever it is I am teaching you. The goal is to get you to be able to play what you want as quickly as possible. This will take practice and dedication on your part, but I will do everything in my power to help you get there.

I never force anything on any of my students. but I feel it would be beneficial for you to learn to read music OR read tablature and chord diagrams. You tell me which one and we'll go in that direction. If you'd like to read music, then we can decide on a book for you. I have used Hal Leonard instructional books (with CD's! this way you can play with a backing track and get a sense of rhythm, which is very important), but I'm open to other method books you might have or like.

After 3 to 6 months, you will feel you are significantly more skilled on the guitar than you were before we started lessons. You will know more chords (and move from chord to chord), be able to do at least some basic fingerpicking and be able to read some music or tablature.

Thanks so much for taking the time to inquire about studying music with me.

Music and studying music has always been a passionate experience for me. I have been so blessed with the teachers and fellow musicians in my life. You should realize that your study of music may start with me, but it will last your entire lifetime. I'm originally from California. I have performances degrees from the Grove School, as well as San Diego State University.
I currently reside in New York City where I get the chance to play with some many great musicians. I have performed in great jazz clubs in New York, on Broadway, and performing arts centers across the country. I'm currently playing in many great performing ensembles. I have put out two CD's as a leader and played on multiple CD's for other artists.

It has been my pleasure to teach privately, as well as in the classroom for 7 years. I enjoy performing many different types of music. I pride myself on being very open minded in terms of musical taste. Never apologize for liking what you like! I bet there is something in that music which is great. I can't wait to learn something from the music you introduce to me.

My most important goal for each student is that they get to where they want to be musically.

I want the student to be able to play the way he or she wants to play. If you want to learn to play one song, that is great! If you want to learn to play one classical etude that is just as great! If you want to learn how to play in a salsa band, bravo! I treat the desires of my students as my curriculum. Each student will receive special prep time from me each week. I pride myself in taking the time and energy to prepare for each meeting. Every time you complete a lesson, it is my hope that you are walking away as a better musician/bass player.

Now I realize that not every student my know exactly what they want. Maybe, they just want to learn a little bass for fun...guess what...that is awesome!

In the beginning I hope to find what will musically interests you the most. Usually, you might have a goal that requires you to play on a higher level than you do presently. If that is true, we might take some time to figure out a road map to get you to that place. Along the way, I'm sure you and I will learn many new concepts and techniques that aid you in becoming the bassist/musician you want to be.

And rest assured, the teacher always learns from the student...this is the best part of teaching: learning from the student.

I have over a decade of extensive experience singing and performing for a range of audiences in the contemporary music genre. Student focused learning is at the center of my teaching philosophy. At the beginning of the first lesson I want to find out the students musical goals, interests and motivation. I aim to meet the student where they are at, and find fun and engaging ways to teach them more about singing and music. After a few months of lessons students can expect to have further understanding of how the voice works (voice students), music theory, performance methods, technique and stylistic tools in their given genre. Students can also expect to have fun, my hope for students leave their lessons each week feeling uplifted, happy and confident.

In my experience, students benefit by learning from many different experiences that address their multiple intelligence e.g. logical, visual, musical, kinesthetic, verbal etc. When teaching I aim to connect skills being learnt with the context of performance while teaching to the students preference learning style.

Trust between my students and I provide the container for the learning process. As a teacher I believe it is my role to facilitate and engage in a reciprocal relationship that inspires the student to learn. My teaching approach is characterized by qualities of love and commitment to singing and music. I love sharing my passion, experiences and knowledge so that students may benefit and share the joy of music. I am flexible and laid back in my approach, while ensuring that each lesson is productive.

It is integral to the learning process to work incrementally, introducing new material skillfully and in achievable portions. This provides maximum opportunity for the student to have as many successes as possible during the lesson. I have found this way of working leaves the student feeling as if each task is achievable. As the teacher I maintain both long and short term goals with my students. In order to reach these desired goals it is important to see the bigger picture while working incrementally week to week.
