My objective is to help students plot a course, travel the path they choose, and find their position on the musical map. I am originally from Arlington Texas, but, I‘ve lived in 5 different states. Outside of Arizona, I lived in Texas, Michigan, Colorado, and California. This experience helped me to broaden my perspective about ways to teach music.
I received a Master’s degree in music from Arizona State University, and a Bachelor of arts in psychology from University of Arizona. Due to my study of psychology and music therapy, I view music a bit different than traditional music educators. I understand and value the importance of strict practice regiments, clarity, and classical musicianship; however, these methods are not the only way to gain musical mastery. I studied voice at Brigham Young University. My musical studies continued at a college in California. I later took private Masters classes from my former professor, Ray Arbizu. Mr.Arbizu had been a leading opera singer in Germany before teaching at B.Y.U.

I've been a choir conductor and music director on and off since 1973.

I had several piano teachers, one of whom had taken from a concert pianist.

I've been teaching privately for 17 years.

I sing professionally.

Music brings me great joy. It is wonderful to share it with my students.

Music is my passion! I am currently a free-lance musician in the greater Phoenix area, playing oboe with various ensembles such as the Scottsdale Baroque Orchestra and Tempe Symphony Orchestra, and teaching oboe and piano lessons to students around the valley. I also sell oboe reeds, both to my own students, and to students across the country.

I have taught private music lessons for over eight years. My greatest motivation is sharing my love of music. Lessons with me are never boring. I always strive to show my students how exciting and fun mastering an instrument can be. Not every student desires to be a virtuoso, but every student deserves the opportunity to gain a better understanding and love of music and their chosen instrument.

Michael has worked with kids for 10 years in schools and arts programs to find fun and their best self through performance. He has taught orchestra, chamber music, jazz band and music theory in the public schools, while performing in local ensembles in and around the city. He also has studied drama, voice and movement and believes all these skills help in expressing yourself--no matter what pieces you want to play!
