Songwriting is an art as well as a craft. In my lessons, I cover basic song structures in a variety of styles including blues, pop, rock, country, and jazz, lyrical content, melodic phrasing, and telling a story. Guitar is my preferred instrument for these lessons, so a background in basic guitar fundamentals is recommended, although some introductory guitar can be included with these lessons.
I received my education at the University of Wisconsin, majoring in Jazz Guitar. I've studied with some of the best guitarists in the Midwest, and have performed live and in recording studios all across the country in a variety of styles (Rock, Metal, Bluegrass, Jazz, Classical, Country). I've performed internationally, and my playing has been featured on several prime time television shows. I've always had a love of music, and it’s a passion that I try to instill in all of my students!
Through focus on note reading, chords, improvisation, and technique, I try to give my students tools that they can take with them throughout their musical journey, whether playing music for fun or professionally!

I'm a piano teacher, pianist, composer, songwriter, singer, and lifetime music lover in beautiful Los Angeles, California. I began playing piano at age 7 and was forever smitten with learning music!
I progressed rapidly and by high school I was winning multiple competitions and talent shows and performed as a featured artist with local youth orchestras in Corpus Christi, Texas. When I was 16, I began teaching piano and music theory to my peers and to kids. Then it was off to Austin where at the University of Texas I studied composition (piano principal under Dr. Betty Mallard) and wrote and arranged for keys (of course) as well as voice, strings, and choral groups I sang in.
I'm a fun, laid-back person and my teaching style reflects that. However I thrive on doing things ...
Having written songs all her life, Crystal now coaches beginners through the process of generating their own work. She has done this in individual tutoring sessions, as well as in Rock the Classroom - a songwriting/literacy course for grades 3-6.
Crystal brings a lifetime’s experience of professional musicianship to each of her lessons. Born into a family of musicians, she sang her first solo at age 2. She also benefits her students with an extraordinarily diverse musical background, having worked as a vocalist in gospel, country, musical theater, jazz, classical, rock, pop and soul styles. Her performing career has taken her from L.A. church meetings to London’s Houses of Parliament.
Crystal hails originally from Los Angeles, CA - where her musical parents gave her a head start by including her in the family business the moment she was able to contribute. She went on to study classical voice, piano and music theory at The Boston Conservatory of Music. After concluding her studies in London, she returned home and ...

I can teach you how to take your song idea and build it into a full fledged song. Simple things like just taking that cool riff or chord progression and turning it into an actual song are made easier through repetition and learning to identify which part of the song it may be (intro, verse, pre chorus, chorus, bridge, solo section, outro, etc.). Also matching melodies to chords and vice versa and using the proper guitar tone so your song can shine are all things I can help you with. I can also help you find inspiration via subject matter or just give you some ideas as to where you may draw inspiration from, as well as from what direction to approach your lyrical content.
I've taught students of all ages everything from popular songs to music theory, technique, all aspects of performing and bands, gear and equipment knowledge and much more.
I approach every student differently and give them goals to reach that will help them in moving forward with their playing and musical knowledge. I make the lessons as enjoyable as possible, mixing taking the music seriously which is essential with a great sense of humor that is also essential. Playing music is supposed to be fun! I will help you reach your goals and have the best time doing so.
