About Me

I have been teaching music for 16 years. I grew up on the 2nd floor of my father's music store in Central PA and have been around music my whole life. I earned a bachelor’s degree in Music Performance from the University of the Arts where I studied jazz guitar with Pat Martino, Jimmy Bruno, Steve Giordano, and Tom Giacabetti. I was one of the original teachers during the formative years at the Paul Green School of Rock Music where I later went on to be the Music Director of the Philadelphia and Downingtown Schools. During that time, I helped many students prepare and get accepted to music schools, ran and developed music summer camps, and organized concerts where the students performed the music of Led Zeppelin, the Beatles, and many more of rock's finest band at every major venue in Philadelphia.

I have been active in the local music scene recording and playing sold-out shows at the Khyber, TLA, Trocadero, Johnny Brenda's and World Café Live with such acts as 722, Bebek, Franzschubert, Sensi Star, Clean Equations, The Black Lodge Ensemble, Dani Mari, Ashley Phillips, and The Smash Brothers. I have played jazz at the Kimmel Center, musical theater at the Walnut Street and Prince Music Theaters, reggae bass at the Jersey Shore, and rocked out at CBGB’s. I have toured throughout the east coast and as far as Shanghai, China. I bring all this range of experience to each lesson.

I am a very easy going and patient teacher. My objective is for a guitar or bass lesson to be both educational and fun. I do not adhere to a strict curriculum because I have found over the years that everyone learns differently. I cater my lessons to the individual goals and tastes of my students.

Whether it is a 7 year old successfully playing a D chord or teenager connecting the dots of music theory, the most satisfying experiences for me is when a student has that “ah hah” moment. I feel it is my job not only to channel creativity but also to help students develop discipline. A typical lesson will consist of learning new skills such as working on rhythm and developing a good ear but most importantly, we will do a large amount of playing.

My teaching studio is furnished with two practice amps, a small PA, and a music stand. I have several guitars both acoustic and electric, plus a bass, keyboards, and several percussion instruments around the house to play with. I really enjoy working with students to develop their own music and am equipped to record demos. I also have an extensive songbook and guitar tab library as a resource to learn songs from. I do have two cats, just to let you know, and my house very easy to get to via public transportation.

Simon S. Philadelphia, PA

Subjects Taught

Bass Guitar, Guitar, Music Performance, Music Theory, Ukulele

About Me

Hi ! My name is Simon. I have an Associate Diploma from the Illawarra Institute of Technology in N.S.W, Australia.
I have a strong passion for music and want to pass that on through a relaxed learning environment full of fun, energy and enthusiasm.
I have taught guitar in both public and private schools and also for 7 summers at a summer camp. I teach from years 6 and above and any level. I teach all styles but my favorites would have to be rock, folk, fingerstyle and alternative.
I like to teach with the focus on the needs of the student; I keep a balance between theory and practice to encourage the student and promote confidence in a non pressured atmosphere.
I had a great private music teacher when I was younger so I hope I can be that source to anyone who has an interest in music! Cheers, Simon

*** Lesson Details ***
Lessons are relaxed and fun with a concentration on learning practical information. We learn to read music, tablature, chord charts, chords( simplify if necessary) rhythms, strumming, scales, improvisation, finger positions and techniques to help navigate that fret board!
I also try and encourage ear training: if you hear certain sounds and distances between notes, you can start predicting what notes or chords come next!
I also show you how to tune your guitar ( so you still sound like you did in the lesson) and how to restring your guitar and make adjustments to your guitar on request.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Lessons will be online or at students houses till such times as a studio space becomes available.

*** Travel Equipment ***
Students should have their own instrument and notepad. If there is a certain book we use it would be in their best interests to obtain it. I will let you know if there is anything else that will be useful to the lessons.

*** Specialties ***
I enjoy teaching rock, acoustic and fingerstyle but I will teach anything students want to learn. If I can introduce new music to people and open their eyes and ears to different styles, I've done my job. I prefer to break music down as simple as needed so students make progress and sound like they're playing a song.

About Me

I started taking music very seriously in middle school when I began guitar lessons at a local music shop. I was inspired at the time to learn all of my favorite Beatles songs as well as the punk music I was totally obsessed with. At the time I was fortunate enough to have been learning from a college educated musician Dr. Mark Cook, director of Composition and Music Theory at Shepherd University and Gerry Kunkel, Guitar chair at Maryland University. My passion for music grew exponentially from this point on and I spent the next years playing in as many ensembles as possible in school as well as my own bands with friends, a chance for me to work on my own compositions. As my drive for music increased I began taking lessons for other instruments including piano, trombone, and voice. This constant practice and dedication to the study of theory eventually resulted in my acceptance to the University of the Arts in Philadelphia to study jazz guitar performance.
At UArts my exposure to music and new musical practices was what kept me constantly working to better myself as a player and composer. I was able to study with many great theorists and performers in both the jazz and classical style including Scott McGill, Tom Giacobetti, Matt Davis. In my spare time in Philadelphia I work on performing my own songs and getting a feel for the music scene in the city. I play with a number of rock groups and folk and through networking found session work as a guitarist, pianist, and vocalist in various studios in Philadelphia. Currently I am playing with the Philadelphia bands Ape School and The Extraordinaires, When I'm not teaching or performing I record at home or do session work for different projects in Philadelphia studios.

About Me

Brendan M. is a true utility player in the music industry. A trained recording engineer and studied musician, he is adept and comfortable behind the board, in the producer’s chair, as well as performing bass, piano, guitar, or ukulele on the other side of the glass.Equally at home at a rock venue, classical concert hall, or jazz club, Brendan’s enthusiasm and love and understanding of many genres of music keeps him in demand as a dude you would want to work with.Formerly touring as bassist with punk/funk band Counter Riot, whose 2011 album was produced by Scott Stallone, he currently plays bass and keyboards for Philadelphia act AlyCat and bass for Wonder & Fury, a band named after a Shepard Fairey painting. As a composer, he has scored music for several films over the last few years, appearing on FunnyOrDie and working with directors from Philadelphia to LA. I am a firm advocate of teaching the student both what they want and what they need. Often, these things can be very different. For example, a student might want to learn how to play one specific song. We will certainly learn how to play that song, but I will give the student more than just the narrow skill set applied in that song. We will work on the technique needed to play the song, the theory behind the music, and more. These skills are all very important to becoming a well-rounded musician, rather than someone who moves their fingers.Working with me on the recording side is no different. We will dig into much more than just hitting the record button. Concepts and principles of audio are very important to learn, as well as technique and ear training. Anyone can hit the record button, so I focus on the big picture in developing the musical and technical side of the student.Of course, I am laid back, and we will have fun always! Lessons with me are a mixture of hard work and a good time. Otherwise, what's the point?
