Music has always been a big part of my life. Performing and recording electric guitar and bass guitar with several bands for over ten years. Toured as lead guitarist with original band for 3 years. Produced & engineered songs for different local artists. I have been teaching private lessons to students of all ages since 2007. I am also a music teacher in early childhood education, currently teaching at several preschools in the twin cities. In 2011 I also started teaching a series of music classes as a part of the music therapy program at Minnesota Veterans Homes.

I am a graduate of Kalamazoo College, where I earned a dual-degree BA in music & psychology in 2009, and Teachers College Columbia University, where I earned my EdM in music education in 2011. I teach upright bass, bass guitar, and guitar, and my number one goal is to make you feel as though your interests for your music study are always kept in mind as we work together. I like to incorporate composition and creativity into private lessons in addition to playing songs and repertoire, and believe there is something of musical value in every song or piece.

I have been teaching for over 8 years and my unique versatility as an educator has given me the experience I need to be successful. I am an Orff-Schulwerk trained teacher, whose philosophy is based on things children like to do: sing, chant rhymes, clap, dance, and keep a beat on anything near at hand in a non-competitive atmosphere where one of the rewards is the pleasure of making good music with others. I have an outstanding rapport with children in the classroom and in one-on-one instruction. I am also a leader and a performer whether I am conducting songs at the all-school assemblies, singing in the community choir, or playing rock music in a club. In addition to the many creative projects outside of work, I am an active board member of my local Orff-Schulwerk chapter which promotes a network of music educators.

Learning music is a challenge that I face with pleasure, passion and persistence. While doing so, I’ve learned to face other life challenges as well. For me, music is a way of life.

Currently, I play regularly with three different groups. In doing so, I get to play blues, rock & roll, and jazz. At shows you may see me playing electric bass, upright bass, or keyboards depending on the night. During the week I teach lessons to a wide range of ages and abilities.

Playing music quickly became my passion when I started playing at 15 years old. The electric bass was my first instrument, but guitar, drums and keyboards promptly followed. During these early years, I was playing with anyone in my small town who knew how to play at a venue which allowed young musicians.

I got my first guitar as a Christmas gift when I was 12 years old, I took a few lessons, practiced a lot, and by the time I was 15, was playing around town with different bands. Although I had some classical training in piano, I learned to play guitar by copying what I heard on records. I made a lot of mistakes learning this way. One reasons I am passionate about teaching is because I can help beginners to avoid making some of the same mistakes I did.

After many years of playing in rock/blues and garage bands, I decided to pursue a degree in music. While enrolled in the university, I sharpened my performance skills, developed a solid knowledge of music theory, and studied jazz improvisation. My knowledge of music theory allows me to explain abstract concepts and ideas to my students in a language that they can understand. Hey! My name is Sheena and I have been teaching lessons for about 6 years. I went to St Cloud State University for 2 years for music education, with saxophone being my major instrument. Now I am currently a student at Mcnally Smith College of Music for my Bachelors in Guitar Performance. I have been playing guitar for about 10 years now and have played shows all around the Twin Cities area. I can also play quite a few other instruments.
I am experienced in recording, composing and producing and have been on a few different albums playing guitar.
I am experienced in the music field which I believe is important to be as a teacher. In my lessons it will be very laid back but productive at the same time.
