I have a BA in Music Education from Humboldt State University, where I also earned my teaching credential. About Me

My Background

I've been playing with classical ensembles and rock bands since 2001. Even though I started on classical trombone and rock guitar, I have come to expand my repertoire to a variety of instruments and genres. During my time in college I performed with the University choir, orchestra, and band. I also have organized, wrote/arranged for, and performed with a variety of bands in my home state of New Mexico, as well as Japan, and the San Francisco Bay Area.

Since 2006 I have been an active teacher. This profession has taken me everywhere from working with classical guitar classes in New Mexico high schools to Elementary students in Japan to a variety of private students of various musical instruments and genres everywhere I've been. Since relocating to the Bay Area in 2010, I've had the pleasure of working with lots of great students from kids to adults with a wide range of ambitions. More recently I've also started teaching online lessons via Skype and Google Helpouts with Take Lessons as well.

Philosophy of Learning

Lessons are generally in a relaxed setting and designed to work towards accomplishing student determined goals. While all students will study similar fundamentals regarding technique, theory, and performance, every lesson is as different as every person. What kind of music do you want to make? I'll tell you what you need to do to get there, and help you take the steps to achieve your aspirations.

I also love to help students put together a song, record, and produce it for them so that they can have a recording to share with their friends and family. (You can hear some of the recordings I've made with my students in my "Pics & Media" tab.)

Lessons with small children are more focused on just having fun while developing a good musical foundation, but I prefer for them to have as much personal ownership of their lesson as possible like my older students as well.

I also hold events for all my students. (Check out our pictures and videos below!)
Younger students have the "Young Musicians Recital" every few months.
Adult students have a weekly "Jam Session Night" that they're welcome to come to whenever they'd like.

Aside from in-studio lessons, students also have the option to sign up for online lessons via Skype as well as do a drop-in lesson through Google Helpouts.
(*Online lessons offered during different times than in-studio lessons.)

*Unfortunately due to scheduling issues, I'm not currently accepting students for bi-weekly lessons. I can do regular weekly lessons, or occasional drop-in lessons, but bi-weekly appointments make it really hard for me to give the best scheduled times to my existing weekly students. I'm sorry for the inconvenience.

My studio is equipped with:

*Multiple Music Stands

*P.A. System

*Vocal and instrument microphones

*Guitars, Basses, and a Banjo

*Two guitar amps (1 tube, 1 solid state) and a bass amp

*Various percussion including both a full acoustic and full electric drum sets

*An 88 Key Keyboard (with extensive sound library and synth programming options)

*A Trombone, Cornet, and Flute

*An extensive physical and virtual music library

*A recording system that students are not only welcome to use but encouraged to

*HD Webcam and condenser microphone for high fidelity online lessons via Skype

About Me

Hello, my name is Chris. I am currently a Jazz Studies major at San Jose State University. I began my musical journey at Dartmouth Middle School. I played saxophone, and was only mildly interested in music. I stayed in music in high school, but remained only mildly interested until my Sophomore year. I discovered the trumpet and began to listen to Louis Armstrong, and became obsessed with jazz and mastering the trumpet. In just 2 short years, I had studied enough trumpet to travel South America with the San Jose Youth Symphony Philharmonic Orchestra. After my South American tour, I decided to teach privately and share my talents with the world. I won a scholarship to San Jose State for music excellence in 2009, and joined the Spartan Marching Band. While in this prestigious organization I performed in Olympic Stadiums, Disneyland, and all over San Jose. I am currently working toward a Bachelor of Music with a dual emphasis in Music Education and Jazz Studies from San Jose State. I work for TakeLessons.com, and Manzana Music.

In addition to in person lessons, I teach online. Online lessons use Skype, which provides students with a convenient opportunity to get high quality music lessons. I have personally received lessons online from the highest level of professionals. I recommend online lessons to anyone who is not able to attend in person lessons, or prefers the convenience of online lessons.

*** Lesson Details ***
My students can expect me to be on time and prepared for every lesson every week. I will have a large selection of music and material for us to learn from every week. All our lessons will be prepared ahead of time. For every hour I spend with you, I spend two at home preparing. I will design lessons based on your weaknesses and what you want from the lessons. We will improve all your skills as a musician, and will have a well balanced lesson plan every week. In addition, I will be glad to upload videos or MP3s and e-mail them to you if you need some extra instruction while studying at home.

I expect that the student have the materials I assign him or her for that week. I expect the student to look at the material and practice it. I do not expect the student to learn it completely or master it in one week, but I do hope for progress. Come prepared with a pencil and something to hold all your music (like a folder or notebook).

Soon after lessons begin, sign of improvement will be clear. My students take very well to my instruction, and show sign of improvement in their bands. All of my students are currently placed in advanced bands.

I can teach Trumpet, Songwriting and Music Theory at professional levels. I teach Piano, Guitar, Saxophone, Bass (upright and electric), Violin and Viola for beginners.

*** Studio Equipment ***

Willie was born and raised in San Jose, California. In the younger years of his life, music was always around him in some sort of way. At the age of ten, Willie was introduced to the trumpet. When learning music through playing trumpet, he felt something deep inside and knew it was his destiny to play music for the rest of his life.
In high school, music was his main focus. During this time of his life, he was forming his music foundation. Focusing on trumpet primarily, until one day his band director said something that changed his path in music. He said, “The more music you get yourself involved in, the better musician you’ll become.” After that, Willie started to sing in concert choir. Eventually, he was able to get into the Mt. Pleasant Studio Jazz Singers, a group that had a national reputation winning approximately thirteen National Down Beat music awards at that time. The group was under the direction of Jan DeShera. Here he developed a stronger foundation studying classical and jazz piano, trumpet, voice, instrumental and vocal arranging, among other subjects. Having great opportunities studying with many great teachers, performing in all genres of music, there was something said that gave him inspiration. “If you’re not practicing as much as you should, it doesn't mean you’re a bad person. It just means that you’re cheating yourself and ultimately you’ll have to cheat someone else.”
After graduating from School for Music Vocations, Willie attended the University of Northern Iowa (U.N.I.) majoring in trumpet performance and jazz studies. In his first year attending, he played trumpet and Latin-percussion in U.N.I. Jazz Band 1, which was one of the premier collegian jazz bands in the country. The band was under the direction of Pianist/Composer/Arranger, Bob Washut. Willie was fortunate to be part of winning another National Down Beat Award for Big Band Performance.
