About Me

I understand that there are many desires a pupil can have about learning music, especially towards the practicality of the modern world and I hope to gear the student towards that. I have worked with children for almost a decade so I am comfortable with youth education. My experience with working with children is mostly with the Boy Scouts of America since I was 14. From teaching scouts about nature, to directing shooting ranges as an NRA Rifle Safety Officer, to eventually managing a camp. As a young adult who has just finished their music degree from collage and working to further my education, I can understand the process of learning a musical instrument and guide the student on a smoother path to their goals.

*** Lesson Details ***
When taking lessons with me, you can expect for a teacher who listens to the desires of his or her student. I believe music theory and technique is essential to learning an instrument, but it can be rough and boring so I spend a good portion of the lesson working with the student towards their goals. This curriculum brings the most important motivation in learning an instrument, which is achieving improvement while having fun. After 3 months, an adult student should have the ability to read music and play chords so they may learn the songs they love and I can help them along. With a child my expectations are different because in my experience most youth under the age of 9 have not established a recognition for the music around them. To compensate for a child I spend a portion of the lesson introducing different styles of music such as classical, jazz, rock, and world. I hope not only to increase the pupil's interest towards their instrument but into music and art in general. My overall goal with a long term student is to understand the basics of technique, reading music, and understanding theory. Once past there I make a point to make the intermediate student want to practice by applying basic skills learned at the beginner level and bring them into songwriting, improvisation, and learning a their favorite radio songs or show tunes.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I can provide the music books, worksheets, amplifiers, bass guitars, pencils and paper.

*** Specialties ***
For Piano I stick to Faber's teaching for youth beginner and than I use Ferdinand Breyer's method for intermediate. My main style of playing that i received in education is mostly in jazz and improvisation. I like to focus of my teaching of music in the genres of jazz, classical, pop, rock, and blues.

Emily F. Laurel, MD

Subjects Taught

Acting, Broadway Singing, Music Performance, Music Theory, Opera Voice, Percussion, Piano, Singing, Songwriting, Speaking Voice

About Me

Hello all! I am Emily F., a recent graduate of Grove City College with a degree in Music Education. While in school I majored in Percussion and Voice and spent the majority of my time performing and gaining experience. I am currently an elementary music teacher with Prince George's County Schools. I have had years of lessons myself and have taught many students as well. As a vocalist, I can teach you how to sing anything from Top 40 hits to Broadway numbers to Operatic Arias. I will help you gain confidence as a performer and vocal strength. I am also prepared to teach beginning piano lessons to help you learn to accompany yourself and others. For percussion lessons, I have years of experience as a principal percussionist in my College's band and orchestra and would love to help you learn how to be a classically trained percussionist, not a drummer. Overall, I offer experience, knowledge, and a chance to get out of your shell and onto a stage.

*** Lesson Details ***
As a teacher, I strive to create an environment that is student centered. I want you to feel as comfortable as possible when we begin a lesson so that you can do your best. Lessons with me will be fairly laid back, but only if I see you giving 100%. My goal is to create self-motivated learners at any age. As far as curriculum goes, I will work off of what you want to learn and what books you may already have. I can suggest books for almost any genre of voice, basic piano books, and I know the best beginning percussion books out there. Regardless of genre or instrument, after a few months with me you will be a confident performer. I want all of my students to not only be trained on their instrument, but on showing their talent to the world.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Full Length Keyboard, Recording Equipment, Guitar (just in case), Ukulele.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I have a keyboard that I can bring if necessary. I would expect students to bring their own percussion instruments.

*** Specialties ***

Vocally, I am comfortable teaching Broadway, pop, or classical vocal styles. In the percussion field, I specialize in mallet instruments, but I am comfortable teaching auxiliary and snare as well.

Tracy H. Chantilly, VA

Subjects Taught

Music Performance, Music Recording, Singing, Songwriting

About Me

4Singers, located in South Riding VA, is a DBA of DMH Records and was founded by voice instructor and international recording songstress Tracy. This Baltimore native unveiled her soulful, exquisitely impassioned voice to the world at the La Fountain Blue at age eleven. She has been traveling the globe as a lead singer ever since, from Sweden to Japan to Morocco. Her single, "Drive Me Crazy,” is presently traversing charts across Europe, Asia, and Africa, having occupied the #1 spot for top sales four times over a three month duration. Tracy's immeasurable vocal and songwriting talents bestow upon audiences a remarkable experience, replenishing one's hopefulness, love, and aspiration.

On a substantial foundation of education, Tracy developed classical proficiency and dexterity; learning to sing in French, German, and Italian at the Baltimore School of the Arts and the prestigious Peabody Preparatory School of Music.

Tracy has performed alongside numerous music legends including Gloria Gaynor, Carlos Santana, Marcus Miller, Jonathan Butler, and Chaka Khan. She also toured internationally as the lead vocalist with Heads Up International recording artists, Pieces of a Dream and was featured on ‘Love’s Silhouette’ (2002) and ‘No Assembly Required’ (2005).Tracy's executive produced three solo albums through her own label, DMH Records, LLC, ‘Seasons’ (2005), ‘Better Days’ (2009), and ‘This is My Life’ (2013). ‘Seasons’ set the tone for Tracy taking her place center stage, exhibiting a breathtaking presentation of her rich vocal tones.

‘Better Days,’ an exceptional successor to ‘Seasons,’ provides a truthful and transparent portrayal of Tracy's musical universe. Songs such as “You’ve Got To Let Go” and “No Regrets” compassionately guide one through self-reflection, while “Better Days” and “Free” offer warming reveries of belief and optimism. With help from collaborative producers Phil Davis, Eric Valentine, and Kelvin Wooten, “Better Days” takes listeners on an inspiring odyssey.

Tracy’s third release, ‘This is My Life,’ hit the airwaves June 2013, immediately gained the attention of music lovers globally, and held the #1 position for two weeks on the UK Soul Charts.

Before the release of her third solo album, Tracy teamed up with DJ Spen in 2012 to release a string of successful house music singles including “Drive Me Crazy” which was #1 for top downloads/sales for 3 consecutive weeks on Traxsource, “Got To Be Strong” reaching the top 10 list for top downloads/sales, and “Never Too Much” also reaching #1 for top downloads/sales.

The success of these house singles led to Tracy recently being signed to House Music label, Quantize Recordings, and the anticipated release of her debut LP with the label entitled ‘Home’ due October 2013. On this musical offering, Tracy fuses the boundaries between Soul, Jazz, R&B and House music, making 'Home’ an exceptional showcase of what Tracy represents.

Tracy performs upon request at a myriad of venues and festivals. She also tours internationally as lead background vocalist for Disco Queen, Gloria Gaynor. Tracy's aspiration is to continue her development and growth as an artist, while performing amongst audiences around the globe.

Subjects Taught

Bass Guitar, Music Performance, Music Theory, Songwriting, Upright Bass, Writing

About Me

Hello, my name is Ethan. I'm a 2014 graduate of Oberlin College and Conservatory where I studied Jazz Bass.

My main performance experience is in jazz settings--I've performed with jazz artists like Rufus Reid, Gary Bartz, Steve Turre, and Marshall Keys. Additionally, I've received Outstanding Soloist and Outstanding Small Jazz Combo Awards from Downbeat Magazine.
While the majority of my experience is in jazz settings, I've also taught rock, pop, funk, and gospel styles to electric bassists and classical styles to upright bassists. While at Oberlin I taught bluegrass, funk, jazz, arranging, improv, and classical lessons to 18-40 year olds. My teaching approach focuses on performance--it doesn't matter what style the student is interested in.

I currently work as a bassist, composer, and arranger in the Washington DC area, and I live in Silver Spring.
