I began music in Winona, MN at age 9 with a pair of drumsticks and went on to become a world champion in 2003 with the Blue Stars drum and bugle corps. I do all things percussion and have been playing for 20 years but these days I do a lot more than just drums.
My time spent studying Music Education at the University of North Texas expanded my musical horizons adding piano and guitar among other tools of the trade. The majority of my students these days are piano students young and old but I love teaching a variety of lessons including guitar and ukelele.
I currently teach piano, drums, and guitar at a local music store in the Twin Cities. I also teach the Hastings drumline in the summer and fall and the Red Wing indoor drumline in the winter time.

I'm currently a student of Music production at McNally Smith college of Music. I have been a drummer since I was 6 years old and an active musician since 14 years old. I'm very proficient in using Logic Pro music software, fairly proficient in Pro Tools, and I can navigate my way around almost any recording or live console. I'm currently writing and arranging for a ska/horn band, so I'm very knowledgeable about music theory. I started teaching privately during my junior year of highschool, and I'm good at teaching younger students. I prefer if any students have some knowledge of traditional music notation, but anything can be taught. I'm very excited and eager to start teaching so please don't hesitate to contact me if you're interested!
For beginners we'll work through the first several sections of "Syncopation for the Modern Drummer" by Ted Reed. This will teach reading, coordination, and subdivision counting. I will also teach basic rudiments and basic hand technique.
For intermediate students we'll work on rock drum set grooves, fills, and solo ideas. I'm totally open to teaching you your favorite songs.
Lessons will always be fun and tailored to the desires of the student.
Hello, my name is Spencer!
I have a Bachelors of Music Performance degree from McNally Smith College of Music in Saint Paul, MN.
I have been playing drums for 13 years; all of which have been spent in constant study of the instrument.
During my time at McNally Smith College I discovered my passion for teaching. I love to share my knowledge and experience with my students and watch as they progress in their abilities and understanding.
I work as a teacher and freelance musician in the Twin Cities area. I have performed in musical theater pit bands, original bands, and regularly perform at multiple churches.
I look forward to meeting you and teaching you how to play the drum set!
