About Jessica

Dear students and parents, Hello and welcome to takelessons.com! My name is Jessica and I am a Baltimore born and bred classically trained violinist with over 19 years of playing experience. Music has always been passion of mine since a very young age, so it was inevitable that it would end up being my career. Naturally, a love for teaching the wonders of music followed suit! I always try to form a great rapport with my students and parents from the very first lesson. For younger students, I encourage my parents to take an active part in both lessons and daily practice, as is encouraged by Shinichi Suzuki. I've been teaching violin and viola professionally for over 8 years now. My experience includes teaching private lessons at students homes as well as at various music ...

Jessica started teaching my son in Feb 2014, just after he turned 5. He told me that he wanted to play an instrument and chose the violin, so we went online and found Jessica here and on the Suzuki website. Her experience and reviews really stood out and I can tell you from our personal experience that every word is true. She is the most patient, kind, fun, engaging, and positive teacher you could ask for for your child. And on top of it all, she is an excellent violinist herself who really understands music and how to explain it.

My son has come a really long way and he is very proud to be able to play the violin! He is not always the easiest to work with, (some days his favorite word is 'no'!) but she really encourages him when he gets frustrated and I know she is a big part of why he has come so far.

One of the things I love about Jessica is her ability to adapt seamlessly to the needs of her students. She is flexible and able to adjust what she does to take advantage of her students' strengths and gradually improve their weaknesses and doesn't just stick to one way of teaching. She is also incredibly accessible if you have questions or need guidance and always stays in touch, even with her busy schedule.

After a few months of my son taking lessons, we even decided to hire her for an extra half hour so that I could get formal instruction too. I am 39 and never seriously played an instrument before (1 year of elementary school clarinet, notwithstanding) yet she can go right from teaching my 5 yr old to working with me without missing a beat. I feel like she brings out the best in her students and I see concrete improvement in my own skills and understanding every week and can't believe how far I have come in only a few months with her.

So bottom line is whether you are 5 or 50 and no matter your experience level, if you are looking for a violin teacher, I highly recommend hiring Jessica immediately

Melissa L. Bel Air, MD

I am capable of teaching beginner, intermediate, and advanced students for the violin. As for the viola, cello, string bass, and piano, I offer lessons for beginner and intermediate students.

For beginner string students, I start with focusing on the Suzuki Method, along with material from the Essential Elements series. Beginner piano students will focus on repertoire from Alfred's Basic Piano Library. Further repertoire will vary for intermediate and advanced musicians.

For beginner students, I will provide a variety of suggestions when purchasing instruments. There will also be a list of repertoire provided for all levels.

I will provide lessons at my home, and am also willing to travel within 25 miles. Depending on the distance, fees will vary for traveling.

I expect my students to provide their own instruments and books. I also expect students to have a stand if the lesson is at their home, in the case that students travel to have lessons at my home, I will provide

I teach using the Suzuki method, which relies on listening carefully to the piece you are learning. I also love to teach jazz, bluegrass and Irish styles.

About Greta

For as long as I can remember, music has been a part of my life. I began dance and piano lessons by the age of three, and at 9 I began to study violin with Phyllis Freeman at Peabody Preparatory in Towson. In high school, I studied with Klara Berkovich, and in 1997 I began studies with Dr. Zoltan Szabo. I graduated from Towson University in 2002. After college I played in Irish, Bluegrass, folk and rock bands. I have been performing locally in an old timey jazz duo for ten years. I have been teaching for 6 years, and I absolutely love it. I try to develop a program individual to each student with challenging and fun material. *** Lesson Details *** Depending on the student's age, I use the Suzuki books and accompanying cd's. Greta has been teaching my 8 year old daughter weekly for almost 2 years now. She is a fabulous, kind, and patient instructor. My daughter is working on Pachelbel Canon right now and listening to them play together in lessons is just amazing to me.

I combine the styles of music that you prefer with some kind of method book for reading and theory. No purchasing of music is required. Normal lessons start with the previously assigned material, determining what we need to work on, new material, and ending with things to do at home.

About Sean

Hi! I'm Sean. I love music and one of my goals in life is to share my love of music with everyone else, in a number of different ways. I'm a senior Music Composition major at UMBC and my primary instrument is guitar. I play a wide range of styles - fingerstyle, classical, rock, jazz, metal, and just about everything in between! My goal is to go to graduate school and become a composer, either in freelance or work in academia. I'm teaching guitar privately to get more teaching experience before I hit the classroom! I strive to have all of my students become balanced musicians. If reading or theory is a soft spot, we'll apply your strengths and catch up quickly. I also think that being interested in the music that you're playing is incredibly important when learning an instrument.

Great first lesson. High hopes for follow lessons.

I self-taught myself guitar over 35 years ago; mostly forgotten. Sean began with establishing goals that would meet my goals. The feedback to me during the lessons was focused and delivered in a friendly manner. Progression was enhanced due to his manner and his approach to teaching. While this was the first lesson, I am looking forward to future lessons.

I find Theresa to be almost like a kindred spirit. Not only does she have MUCH knowledge of her artistry but, of course, shares my love for music, children, animals, crafting, sports etc. In addition, she has great patience with me which has enabled me to learn an artistry that I never really thought to be possible. I am VERY pleased with her instruction.
