About Me

Music has been a large part of my life since I first started taking piano lessons at the age of six. In fifth grade, I learned to play the flute, and I performed in bands all the way through college. In high school, I also picked up the violin, and enjoyed playing in orchestras as well. I earned my Bachelors degree in Music Education and my California teaching credential from Biola University in Southern California. During that time, I enjoyed playing many other instruments. My primary instruments are the flute, piano, and violin, although I also play (and teach) beginning clarinet, viola, and cello.

In addition to giving private lessons, I also teach school band and orchestra, so I bring the added perspective of a conductor who can help students learn how their part fits in with the whole ensemble. I have taught elementary, middle school, and high school band and orchestra, as well as clinics and small group classes.

Currently, I teach music in the Los Altos School District. I also enjoy performance opportunities. I have years of experience teaching private lessons on several instruments to students of all ages and backgrounds. I love to help students experience the joy of music, whether it is as a future career, or simply as a hobby. My goal for my students is to learn and grow as musicians, and to have fun in the process!

*** Lesson Details ***
I approach teaching private music lessons in a way that is both fun and productive. Students will find my personality to be very warm, encouraging, and easy going. I am genuinely passionate about helping students reach their musical goals, whether they are career oriented or simply as a hobby. I am well versed in a variety of literature on each instrument that I teach, and will help students find enjoyment in learning to make music at any age. I believe in having a strong foundation in the basic fundamentals of music technique and also in the importance of playing styles of music that are both fun and rewarding. It can certainly be challenging to learn a new skill, but with hard work, determination, and fun motivation, it will certainly be worthwhile!

*** Studio Equipment ***
Open living room setting. Upright piano. Couches for parents. Parking across the street. One small, friendly dog.

*** Specialties ***
I am very well rounded in both popular and more traditional styles of music. I do not necessarily insist on teaching from any one particular series of method book, although I am familiar with several. I will work with each student to determine which method books are most appropriate and also provide supplemental materials. If you already own a book, have a particular one in mind, or are already playing from a certain book in school, that is fine, too!

About Me

Hello, my name is Chris. I am currently a Jazz Studies major at San Jose State University. I began my musical journey at Dartmouth Middle School. I played saxophone, and was only mildly interested in music. I stayed in music in high school, but remained only mildly interested until my Sophomore year. I discovered the trumpet and began to listen to Louis Armstrong, and became obsessed with jazz and mastering the trumpet. In just 2 short years, I had studied enough trumpet to travel South America with the San Jose Youth Symphony Philharmonic Orchestra. After my South American tour, I decided to teach privately and share my talents with the world. I won a scholarship to San Jose State for music excellence in 2009, and joined the Spartan Marching Band. While in this prestigious organization I performed in Olympic Stadiums, Disneyland, and all over San Jose. I am currently working toward a Bachelor of Music with a dual emphasis in Music Education and Jazz Studies from San Jose State. I work for TakeLessons.com, and Manzana Music.

In addition to in person lessons, I teach online. Online lessons use Skype, which provides students with a convenient opportunity to get high quality music lessons. I have personally received lessons online from the highest level of professionals. I recommend online lessons to anyone who is not able to attend in person lessons, or prefers the convenience of online lessons.

*** Lesson Details ***
My students can expect me to be on time and prepared for every lesson every week. I will have a large selection of music and material for us to learn from every week. All our lessons will be prepared ahead of time. For every hour I spend with you, I spend two at home preparing. I will design lessons based on your weaknesses and what you want from the lessons. We will improve all your skills as a musician, and will have a well balanced lesson plan every week. In addition, I will be glad to upload videos or MP3s and e-mail them to you if you need some extra instruction while studying at home.

I expect that the student have the materials I assign him or her for that week. I expect the student to look at the material and practice it. I do not expect the student to learn it completely or master it in one week, but I do hope for progress. Come prepared with a pencil and something to hold all your music (like a folder or notebook).

Soon after lessons begin, sign of improvement will be clear. My students take very well to my instruction, and show sign of improvement in their bands. All of my students are currently placed in advanced bands.

I can teach Trumpet, Songwriting and Music Theory at professional levels. I teach Piano, Guitar, Saxophone, Bass (upright and electric), Violin and Viola for beginners.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Lessons in a private room, several music stands, piano, computer, pencils, paper.

*** Travel Equipment ***
1 trumpet to rent, books, electric pianos, pencils, paper, customized music.

*** Specialties ***
I specialize in the Jazz genre. I am professionally trained in Classical music as well. I can teach both genres for Guitar, Viola, Violin, Bass, Piano, Trumpet, Saxophone, Music Theory, and Songwriting.

Violin

About Me

I graduated from Boston College with a bachelors and I started a Masters Program in Architecture at the University of Pennsylvania. Though my higher education does not necessarily lend itself to playing the violin, I can reassure you that my abilities along with my experience totally qualifies me as an able teacher that can guide a student of any age through a step by step process on how to learn to play the violin. I personally will be following the footsteps of my own private teacher, Margaret Pardee. Margaret Pardee is a professor at Juilliard and was a teaching assistant to Ivan Galamian. Using my learning experiences that I shared with Mrs. Pardee, I will pass down her teachings to whomever becomes my student.
I was concert master of the Cold Spring Harbor High school orchestra. While studying under Margaret Pardee I attended Mannes Music School and qualified for All County and All State orchestras of New York where I attained competitive seat assignments. I attended Killington Music Festival for three years where I played with notable musicians from around the country and the world. I have played the violin for 26 years and I am a dedicated teacher who is fun yet also serious about having a structured foundation.
Scales, Etudes, and finally Solo Pieces will round out every lesson. That is of course, assuming that we make it through the scales and etudes. Throughout my musical education it has been reiterated that scales are the most important to forming a solid base. While the solo piece of music may be most appealing to a student, there can be little gain without scales and etudes.
