I am here to teach you at the pace that works best for you! Everyone is different and everyone likes different styles of music- I try to cater to that as much as possible. I will always set the expectation bar as high as you're willing to go.

For piano, when teaching in books, I normally go for the Faber! For guitar, various renditions of Hal Leonard, and for voice, The Rock and Roll Singer's Survival Manual. If you feel that you're better suited to learn primarily by ear or without the specific training of instruction books, let me know and we can pursue alternatives.

Stephanie J. Murfreesboro, TN

Subjects Taught

Acting, Broadway Singing, Music Performance, Opera Voice, Singing, Speaking Voice

About Me

Stephanie J. graduated with a Masters of Art in Teaching in Music Education from Indiana University in 2002. She also has a Bachelor‚¬Ä¬ôs Degree in Vocal Performance from the University of West Florida. Stephanie enjoyed singing with The Indiana University Opera and The African American Choral Ensemble, during her graduate work. She has performed the role of Gretel in the opera Hansel and Gretel and has performed Mendelssohn‚¬Ä¬ôs Elijah at Carnegie Hall with vocal solos under the direction of world renowned baritone Sherill Milnes. Stephanie has performed in such musicals as Sweeney Todd, Hello Dolly, Showboat, Lil' Abner and many more. Her current students can be seen in lead roles in their high school productions, as well as in community theatre.

Stephanie is currently an adjunct professor in the Voice Department at the School of Music at Middle Tennessee State University and on the Voice Faculty at Cumberland University. She is a former music educator in Murfreesboro City Schools and Rutherford County Schools. Stephanie maintains a voice studio of 30 students year round in Murfreesboro, TN. She is a member and section leader in the International award-winning TuneTown Show Chorus, and a member of NATS the National Association of Teachers of Singing. She has taught all ages, from babies in Music with Mommie classes to the maturing voice. Stephanie feels blessed to be able to do what she loves on a daily basis as a profession. Her passion and joy is teaching her students how to properly use their voices so they can find the artist within.

*** Lesson Details ***
My approach to lessons is simple. Tension in the body equals tension in the voice and If you can speak it, you can sing it!

In voice lessons students learn to base singing not on what they hear, but on what they feel in the vocal tract and body. We cannot see this instrument, like we can a piano, or trumpet and so the technique must be based on what it feels like.

Why Should I Take Lessons from Stephanie?

Are you wanting to improve your vocal range? 100% of my students have gained up to an octave of range through lessons with me.

How about agility? The exercises I give my students will improve your agility to handle difficult vocal passages.

Freeing those notes in your upper register a problem? I know how to help "let go" of those notes that you avoid.

Do you have a noticeable "break"? The break or passaggio is the weakest part of the voice. I teach my students how to approach and sing through the passaggio by using mixed voice.

Whatever your "vocal issues" may be, I have the knowledge and experience to help you gain the voice you knew was already in you.

Other Benefits for taking lessons with Stephanie: You will come away with a knowledge of not only how to sing your exercises, that are tailored just for you but the reason why we sing them. This is not a studio where you will learn a bunch of songs. Yes, of course you will learn appropriate repertoire for your voice but you will learn to sing this repertoire correctly. We break it down and work it out! Learning is Messy! Convenience of paying for lessons online and being sent lesson notes to your email each week are just a few of the other benefits of lessons with Stephanie.

Students will also learn:

Technique: Body Alignment, Proper Breathing, Resonance, Placement, varied singing styles and the technique for each style from classical, musical theatre, or pop.

Musicianship: Music literary through music reading, sight singing, and aural skills, phrasing, creative music exploration.

Repertoire: Students will learn a broad selection of repertoire, Art Songs, Classical Pieces, Musical Theatre, and Foreign Language Songs.

Students are required to attend Studio Class.

Students will learn in a positive atmosphere with other students from my studio in Studio Classes. These classes will be once a quarter. There will be a fee for studio class. These classes are workshops for the students to become more prepared in performance for their current repertoire. At times I will bring in an outside coach/clinician to work with the students during studio classes.

Students participate in a Spring Recital.

*** Specialties ***
Specializing in musical theatre, classical voice using Italian methods of singing, such as bel canto style. Speech level singing, singing based on the speaking voice. A Capella styles, such as barbershop singing, and contemporary styles used in pop, rock, and Christian music.

About Me

I am passionate about Music and Music Education. It's rewarding for me to watch my students develop in their musical skill and enjoy making music more and more. My students range from the very young (4 years old) to school age children, to teens, and adults. My students benefit from my expertise in teaching Vocal and Piano music, my knowledge of Music Theory, and my encouraging teaching style. I have been involved in making music since I was a young child, and I have been teaching private students since I was a Music major at the University of Florida in 1982 when a fellow college student asked me to teach her voice lessons. I have a Music Education degree from the University of Florida; my major instrument was Voice, my minor was Piano. I taught as a public school music educator in Florida, California, and Tennessee between the years of 1983 to 1997. I taught private students after school in my classroom while I was a public school teacher, and from my home since 1997. My post-graduate continuing professional education includes Tennessee Arts Academy at Belmont University, Kodaly Pedagogy and Solfege Level 1 (vocal teaching techniques, do-re-mi, ear training), Orff-Schulwerk Music for Children Level 1 certification, Yamaha M.I.E. (Music In Education) Piano Lab certification. My professionalism and expertise are at your service. I will work together with you to insure an enjoyable and informative learning experience.

*** Lesson Details ***
A typical lesson in my studio would begin with a brief question/answer time with the student to learn how their week has gone, and how their music practice is progressing.

For PIANO LESSONS we begin with Technique including scales and dexterity exercises, then we play from the Lesson book and a Recital selection. I typically let the student play through the pieces they have prepared without interruption, then I call attention to corrections that need to be made, I demonstrate the correction, and then ask the student to play the piece again. After that we go over the Theory assignments, and do Ear Training exercises. I am comfortable teaching from a variety of different methods courses. The methods course is chosen according to the student's interest. I never require a piano student to continue using books that are not inspiring. There so many methods courses available, that a student may always be able to have methods books they LOVE.

In my SINGING LESSONS we also begin with a recap of the student's week. Then we continue with Warm Up exercises to prepare the student's voice for the lesson. Then we study Sight Singing and Solfege Singing (do-re-mi-fa-sol-la-ti-do) to increase the student's listening skills. After that the student sings their selections. Like I do in Piano lessons, I listen to the pieces they have prepared without interruption, then I call attention to corrections that need to be made, I demonstrate the correction, and then ask the student to sing the piece again. I am comfortable teaching many styles of vocal music including classical, Broadway, pop, rock, and Christian.

For MUSIC THEORY lessons, the study material is chosen according to the student's interest and age. Topics include notation, chord structure, chord progression, melodic structure, and harmony. I also incorporate Music Listening in the Music Theory lesson in order to learn from the masters in many styles of music. My Music Theory students will also have the opportunity to develop composition and songwriting skills if they desire.

My teaching style is structured and friendly, keeping the student's goals and interests at the forefront. I enjoy motivating students to reach their highest potential.
After 3 to 6 months in my studio my students will see improvement in their musical technique, ear training, music reading, notation, and knowledge. They will be preparing recital pieces for an upcoming performance. I provide two recital opportunities a year: in December, and in May. Most importantly, the student's love and appreciation of music will be growing.

I graduated from Belmont University in 2009 with a BA in Commercial Voice-emphasis in music business. I am currently the co-owner of The Recording Republic here in Nashville, TN where my partner and I write/produce music and help develop artists. *** Lesson Details ***
The most important things I focus on in my lessons are positivity and building confidence. The confidence learned expressing yourself creatively is something that bleeds over into all aspects of life. It's so wonderful watching a kid (or an adult!) gradually come out of their shells during the process.

During the first lesson, I sit down with the student and talk to them about their dreams and goals. That way, I can build a curriculum that perfectly fits their needs. We can learn anything their heart desires-from classical Beethoven to writing their own music! For basic piano I love to use the "Bastien" and "Alfred" basic collections because they are what I grew up on.

Can't wait to meet you!

*** Studio Equipment ***
In my studio I have a weighted keyboard, mic, amp, mirror and video for recording performances. I also have a two camera shoot for online lessons... Sarah C. Nashville, TN

Subjects Taught

Broadway Singing, Music Theory, Piano, Singing

About Me

I am a classically trained vocalist who started singing and playing piano at the age of 7. I have a background in music theater, opera and commercial voice. I studied piano through college and started teaching beginning piano and voice during my summer breaks. I attended Belmont University where I earned a Bachelor of Music degree in vocal performance and minor in music business. I absolutely love teaching beginning voice and piano, most of all, I want you to learn to love music and the possibilities it can bring you.

*** Lesson Details ***
I work with beginner students in piano and voice, typically ages 6 to 18, but have several adult students. I want to make my students feel comfortable and excited for their lessons ready to have fun. For piano, I use the Bastien Piano Basics Series along with supplemental material. For my adult students I typical use the Fundamentals of Piano books by Keith Snell.

My students learn basic technique, theory, music history and ear training. During music history and theory lessons, I like to use the computer and iPad as another resource to teach.

During voice lessons, each student will learn the basics of singing. I use a book I have used myself during my vocal studies, Releasing the Inner Voice: A Guide for Singers by Marjorie Halbert, to help through the beginning stages. My main goal as a teacher is to show you how to sing properly and safely first, then, we can use that foundation as a sounding board to experiment in the different styles you want to sing.

*** Specialties ***

Beginning classical/opera, gospel, musical theater and pop voice.
