About Me

I have played drums for 20+ years, and have played professionally for all genres; from rock to country, from jazz to hip/hop and even Broadway musicals. I have been teaching lessons privately for the last five years and I am really enjoying it. I went to Trevecca Nazarene University, in Nashville, TN with a music scholarship, and graduated with a degree in Music Business, with an focus on percussion performance. I have spent time on tour buses and in studios, but now that my family is growing I want to spend more time at home. Teaching lessons has allowed me to do that, and I have found a new level of personal fulfillment by sharing my love of drumming with my students. I am very excited about joining the TakeLessons team and would love to help you meet you (or your child's) drumming goals.

*** Lesson Details ***
I am an "easy-going" teacher and will go at the learning pace of each student. With Every student of mine, I will establish an individualized set of short term and long term goals. These goals are set in the first few lessons and are adjusted as the student progresses. Though I am laid back, I am a "stick"ler (drummer joke) for using proper technique and fundamentals. Lessons should be fun because music is fun.

The Typical lesson itinerary : Warm-ups and rudiments (drummer's version of scales)
Snare drum technique,
Drum set technique (as students progress, this will include learning songs),
Lastly, I will assign next week's goal(s) (homework).

I use the "Drum Method" book by Haskell W. Harr, and "Alfred's Beginning Drumset Method" book, as well as some exercises that I have developed.

*** Studio Equipment ***
The studio is setup in an extra room of my house, and I have two drum-sets along with a number of other percussion instruments. In the studio, I do have a chair where parents/guardians, friends, siblings and/or offspring are welcome to watch the lesson, but it does get loud in there. Family and Friends are also welcome to wait during the lesson in our living room and watch tv, read, and drink coffee.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I am willing to travel with a practice pad and or a snare drum. However, if a drumset lesson is desired, I would need you to provide the drum-set for the lesson.

*** Specialties ***
I am a classically trained percussionist, but I specialize in drumset playing. My primary genres are rock, jazz, country. But can play/teach any style.

Russ S. Nashville, TN

Subjects Taught

Drum, English, Music Performance, Music Recording, Percussion, Reading

About Me

I am a Recent graduate of Berklee College of music in Boston with 10 years of teaching experience, and 17 years playing experience. I have won multiple drum competitions and have experience performing in all styles from jazz (Phil Woods) to folk (Jay Ungar and Molly Mason).

I first got excited about the drums from watching local bands play in my hometown of Ithaca, NY. From there I began to play in the jazz band at a community music school, and soon after that began playing in elementary school concert and jazz band. Soon after, I started playing in cover bands and expanding my repertoire. In high school I won two downbeat awards for best pop/rock drummer (2004) and outstanding performance for jazz drumming (2005). In high school I played in various touring groups, and started Berklee in 2009.

Since Berklee, I have worked on Celebrity Cruise lines as a drummer for jazz and rock bands, as well as playing for the theatrical performances and musical reviews. I am happy to have my teaching studio up and running in Nashville!

My influences are many, but if I were to break them into categories:
Rock: John Bonham, Abe Cunningham, Abe Laboriel Jr
Funk: Chris Dave, Ziggy Modeliste, Pete Mclain
Jazz: Tony Williams, Max Roach, Art Blakey

*** Lesson Details ***
“Russ is one of the absolute best students I have ever had in my long teaching career at Berklee College of Music. Russ is very talented, smart, highly disciplined and open minded as a musician. Having Russ as a teacher will be an experience where the student will receive an effective, focused, and open minded approach to the students individual musical needs and interests.”

-Dave Weigert, Drum Instructor, Berklee College of Music.  I've been teaching privately for 10 years, and in that time have found that the best way to maximize each students success is to focus on the material that is most interesting to them.

Beginning students can learn their favorite songs, while getting a basic foundation in rudiments and syncopation, while advanced students can structure the lesson in a way they would find the most beneficial to their playing style and interests.

I am happy to recommend books, music and DVDs relevant to your interests! I have a huge collection of drum books, DVDs and music that I am happy to share!

*** Studio Equipment ***
Drum set, PA, amps, guitars, computer, microphones. Chairs are also provided if a parent would like to watch a lesson. Full recording and video capabilities.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I would like students to have a drum set, sticks, manuscript book and assignment book for each lesson. I can provide anything else for the lesson such as recordings or sheet music.

*** Specialties ***
I have experience playing and teaching rock, jazz, Latin, concert snare drum and marching percussion.

I am familiar with the Allen Dawson, Ted Reed, and John Riley methods for jazz drumming.

About Me

Music, and drumming in particular, continues to be an exciting lifetime journey for me and I find the greatest rewards in teaching students how to achieve their own musical and lifetime goals. Currently, I'm available to travel to your location to teach you on the comfort of your own drum kit, snare drum, or percussion gear. Or, I can bring the essential gear required to help you have fun learning all about music and drumming, such as playing in certain styles or training your coordinated independence between hands, feet, and voice. As a teacher, I work with all ages of beginner to advanced students, specializing in middle school and high school percussion studies in addition to music therapy for special needs children.
I have over 25 years experience in all areas of drum set and percussion education, recording, and performance. I was principal percussionist and drumline captain throughout my high school career participating in the concert, symphonic, jazz, and marching bands. I was selected for All-State Jazz Band during my senior year and went on to study music education at the University of Georgia while being selected for a slot in the Redcoat Marching Band and the University Steel Drum Band during my freshman year. I completed my music business degree from Georgia State University, while studying under world class teachers like Jack Bell, principal percussionist for Atlanta Symphony for over 30 years.
Throughout my career, I continue to be influenced, inspired, and taught through private lessons, master classes, videos, books, and recordings from David Garibaldi, Simon Phillips, Rod Morgenstein, Neil Peart, Gregg Bissonette, Jerry Fields, Jim White, John Lawless, Billy Degnats, Eric Darken, Gary Chaffee, Kim Plainfield, Chuck Silverman, Steve Houghton, Jeff Hamilton, Jeff Porcaro, Buddy Rich, Gene Krupa, Tito Puente, Steve Gadd, Dave Weckl, Steve Smith, Vinx, and Zorro.
As your drum teacher, I can help students excel in school music programs to pursue scholarships, transform the garage band into a gig-ready act, bring laughter and joy for special needs, encourage senior citizens trying something new with music in their golden years - all of these scenarios and more with the ultimate goal to coach you to becoming the creative musician you dream of becoming based on the musical artists that inspire you. Let's get started today.

*** Lesson Details ***
I'll have you playing and understanding rhythmic concepts right away. I love to start lessons off by learning from my students who their favorite drummer is or what music track inspires them. Then we turn "I wanna do that!" into "I can do that!"
I customize each lesson to each particular student's goals, although I have many solid foundation concepts and exercises that I employ at the appropriate times. I keep the lessons extremely positive and encouraging, but I will drive and challenge my students to help them find joy in pushing themselves through a difficult new concept or overcoming a physical hurdle.
I try to broaden my students' appreciation for multiple genres of music with a lot of historical or anecdotal stories which fit within the context of whatever contemporary methods we are actually studying. As much as possible, I incorporate technology into our lesson time with click track (metronome), play-along music, and other developmental tools.
Listening is a critical skill that I constantly emphasize, and yes, I do assign "homework" between lessons, but I make the assignments fun and they usually help to quickly unleash the creative spirit of each student!
My greatest joy is when a student has a band performance I can watch or a positive audition experience I can celebrate with them after having helped them prepare for the event.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Drum kit, multiple hand percussion instruments, PA system, practice pad kit, dry erase boards, and multi-media.

*** Travel Equipment ***
The students should have a new three-ring binder or a spiral notebook to track weekly lessons and assignments. Ideally, students should have sticks/mallets, a snare drum, drum set, hand percussion (bongos, conga, djembe, cajon), or perhaps a school-supplied instrument. If none of those items are owned or available, that's not a problem. I can provide practice pad(s) and or small drum and percussion supplies to help us get started until students/parents can invest in their own gear later on based on their specific interests.

*** Specialties ***
Drum Set - Musicality & playing drum beats from day 1. Also, reading music & rhythmic training.

Percussion - School band and concert percussion (such as bells, xylophone, marimba, and vibraphone). Prep for auditions. Drum maintenance, tuning, and various hand percussion (conga, bongos, cajon, djembe, tambourine, etc.).

Jared C. Nashville, TN

Subjects Taught

Acting, Bass Guitar, Classical Guitar, Drum, Guitar, Music Performance, Music Recording, Music Theory, Piano, Speaking Voice

About Me

My name is Jared.

I teach music lessons in Nashville, I teach students from ages 6 to 65.

I can teach drums, piano, guitar, bass and other instruments, for just about any style including pop, rock and classical.

I have Bachelor of Arts in Music from Arizona State University, where I specialized in Guitar performance. I'm a firm believer that playing music and learning an instrument should be fun, and I try to emphasize that in every lesson I teach. The curriculum that I use is entirely tailored to the student, based off of their needs and skill level, as well as the style of music they listen to. I have a simple approach to learning a new instrument, you get what you put into it.

If you take lessons with me, I will make it my goal to see you get excited about learning an instrument and utilizing your own creativity!

*** Lesson Details ***
We will start with the basics of any instrument in the first lesson. From there, I gauge the students ability to pick up on the music and his/her playability, thus tailoring the curriculum around their abilities, passions, and desires for the future of their instrument-playing.

Typically within the first 2 lessons, the student is playing songs that they have wanting to play, and maybe thought would be too hard.

The best thing to bring to me as a student or parent is a list of songs or artist that the students likes to listen to and would like to play.

*** Studio Equipment ***
living room, 3 couches, drum set, guitars, amps...parents can sit in anytime.

*** Specialties ***
I can teach jazz, blues and rock style guitar and bass. On drums, I can teach a student rock and blues, funk and pop music, and some mild jazz. I know scales, modes, and still have many music theory books from college that I pull from for teaching.
