I have been a professional performing musician and teacher for going on a decade. I've studied jazz guitar and film scoring at Berklee as well as bass and composition at Lewis and Clark. I've toured across the country several times over, playing everything from jazz to funk, metal to pop. More importantly, I've been teaching privately since high school when I'd bike to students houses around my neighborhood. Since then I've taught at the local branches of School of Rock in Portland, OR, Boston, and New York, teaching privately, coaching ensembles, directing student concerts, and teaching theory workshops. I also have been working to integrate cutting edge digital technology into my teaching practices should students wish to explore contemporary processes. Music has long been my life's love, and my highest hopes lie in in sharing its rewards.
I also have spent terms on and off teaching middle and high school English, History, and Spanish and have moonlighted in kitchens and bars. I freelance as a writer of both fiction and journalism.
No matter what you are interested in, my lessons are wholly student driven. I work with you to determine your goals and how to best achieve them through fun and accessible exercises.
*** Lesson Details ***
My primary interest with any student regardless of age or instrument is to cultivate a higher appreciation and understanding of music, both as a listener and a participant. As the hopes of any student is the mastery of songs, my teaching style is largely founded in learning songs, no matter the difficulty level. While I have a myriad of exercises and drills to build technical prowess, I work with each student to build a curriculum as unique as they are, they're own musical tastes the seeds from which we will grow our goals. Not too far removed in years from my own beginning days, I know it's no fun to try and play what you wouldn't listen to in the first place. As basic technique is developed I introduce students to a wider range of influences that best suits their interests and aims. All I ask from my students is that they enjoy their practice, however strenuous or laid back it may be.

Hey there! My name is Nick and I'm a student at UC-Berkeley, otherwise known as Cal. I graduated high school in 2011 with a weighted GPA of 4.51 and an unweighted GPA of 3.91. I excel in all sorts of subjects, especially mathematics, English, and American history. I'm also a highly qualified SAT tutor. I'm very up-to-date with the test, as I only took it two years ago. My score breakdown is as follows: 790 in Critical Reading, 780 in Math, 710 in Writing, 2280 Composite. I've been tutoring elementary, junior high, and high school kids for three years now. In my short history, I've had 9 clients, all of whom saw an improvement of at least one letter grade in the class for which they received tutoring. But aside from the stats and credentials, I love teaching. Nothing can quite quantify the feeling of satisfaction I get when a student has an "aHA!" moment. When they finally grasp the concept that's given them so much trouble, I know I've done my job. And furthermore, it's fun for me! Three years into this, I am hard-pressed to call tutoring a job. Being a college student myself, I know what makes kids tick. Whether it's through humor, sports, or what have you, I can find ways to connect to kids. And once I earn their trust, getting them interested in learning is nothing more than a cakewalk. If you're interested, I am too. Contact me!
