Hello, My name is John.

I can benefit you as a student with my experience and great attitude. My general teaching philosophy is to get the students to set goals for themselves and together, work towards those goals. I emphasize the importance of music theory, technique and aural skills. If you would like to know more about my personal experience, keep reading my biography below!
I have a Music degree from Wayne State University, with a concentration in jazz studies, where I focused on performance and writing; including composition, arranging and orchestration. I have several years experience in performance, studio work and teaching. I participate in the American Guild of Music, and Studio Recitals. I have been teaching guitar and bass since 2002.

I am currently a staff bassist at a catholic church in Rochester Hills, MI. I toured with Ugly Radio Rebellion and Ike Willis (of Frank Zappa) for several years. I play in several pop, rock and jazz combos. Most of them...

I have been playing guitar for 25 years. I took formal guitar lessons for seven years, won numerous awards locally and nationally, and have been a professional musician for most of my life. I have studied music theory elaborately, and was accepted to both the Berklee School of Music in Boston, and the Musicians Institute in Los Angeles. I decided to start on a musical career immediately, and did so in my hometown of Detroit. I play/teach, have written, performed, and recorded everything from indie rock, Jazz, classical guitar, Flamenco/modern latin guitar, and other traditional world music. I currently front my own indie rock project "The Static Dial", as guitarist/vocalist/songwriter.

I teach all styles of guitar, as I have been in many different types of music situations: Soloist (Classical) Ensemble (Classical and Jazz) Lead and Rhythm (Various Rock and Roll bands) Songwriting and Recording. I am a people person that learned the guitar from many different sources. Most of my learning came from watching others and communicating with others. I like to learn about the people I am teaching so that I can better understand their needs as a musician. My education came as a practical necessity in order to get better as a teacher and performer, as well as make a living doing it. But, by no means do I preach the need to be "educated" to be a working, practical musician. This can scare people off. I do however enlighten you into why it may be important to understand certain aspects of music as opposed to just "picking and grinning", IE learning only "By Ear."

I am a senior Jazz Studies major at Wayne State University. I have previously earned both a Associate of Arts degree, and a Music Foundations Certificate from Schoolcraft College in Livonia, Michigan. I have years of experience as a professional guitar instructor, working with both children and adults of all ages.
