James P. Petaluma, CA

I play and teach all styles and all ages. I'm patient and supportive with younger students. A typical comment from older students about my lessons would be: "I've had so many years of piano lessons and this is the stuff I've always wanted to learn.
I have most students improvising at their very first lesson.

About James

I've played keyboards and sang professionally for the last 25 years. During that time my home has been in the San Francisco Bay Area but I have performed all over the country and have toured several times in Germany, Switzerland, and Japan. I’m a two time winner of the West Coast Songwriters “Song Of The Year Award” and I write music and lyrics as well as record and produce songs for myself and others.

Over those years I've developed a wealth of knowledge and experience that I’m very excited to share with my students. I want you to tell me what your musical dreams are and we will develop a plan to reach them and I will be honored to guide you there.

Jimmy is a great teacher

I have been taking lessons once every week from Jimmy for over a year and I haven't ever been disappointed by a lesson we've had. My favorite part of the lesson is always when we do the blues together at the very end. Overall, Jimmy is a great teacher.

Good Experience

James was a good match for my son. He pushed him to try new things and explore his abilities in a casual manner that appealed to my son's personality and learning style. He was very positive and encouraging.
Nathan C. San Francisco, CA

About Nathan

Originally from Washington, I started taking piano lessons in second grade. In high school, my piano teacher suggested that I start teaching piano lessons, and after the first couple lessons with my first student, I found that I loved teaching! Watching a student grow and improve is one of the most rewarding experiences a teacher can have in life.
I am a classically trained pianist with a bachelors degree in music and I'm currently pursuing my masters. I have five years of teaching experience with students ranging from young children to adults. I'm patient and laid back and I believe that learning should be enjoyable. I'm flexible with my teaching style. Each student learns differently and I like to try to teach based on how the student learns best.

Patient Piano Teacher

Nathan has been great with our 13 yr old son (who does not always given piano practice his full attention). Still, Nathan stayed with him, never lost enthusiasm, and kept our son engaged and learning. Nathan has an approachable, patient style. He does a good job mixing types of music and a variety of practice elements. Today, I am surprised by what my son can play on the piano and his knowledge of music. We look forward to continuing to work with Nathan.

Beginning students can expect to learn note reading and technique exercises designed to strengthen the fingers and help the student recognize common musical patterns, as well as starting to play simple songs immediately, and then songs using left hand chords.

Intermediate students can expect to learn more difficult pieces involving left hand and right hand chords, as well as basics in musical interpretation and improvisation.

Advanced students can expect a focus on the musical subtleties on more advanced works.

About Sandra

I am a classically trained pianist and trumpet player with a
bachelor's degree in music education. I have taught for over 20
years, to both adults and children, with a focus on classical basics
and music theory for beginners and stylistic development in various musical styles for intermediate and advanced students. I teach from a standard
method, but adapt my teaching style to the personality and learning
strengths of my students.

I teach from my home in the Castro neighborhood.

Excellent in all regards

Sandy is great. She is supportive and encourages me beyond what I think I can do (and usually I can do it). I've only been working with her for 3 weeks and already my high notes (my biggest problem) are much better and I'm sight reading at a much higher level. She is helping me to have a goal (an audition about 5-6 months) which gives me the incentive to practice when the going gets tough. She is helping me to bring my love of music back into my life.

Donna D. Corte Madera, CA

I take students of any age, starting with age 8, who are just beginning with their musical journey, or who are returning to the piano after many years. I teach the basics, including basic rhythms, notation, scales, arpeggios, chords, etc. as well as learning pieces. I am interested in the musical styles of the various periods of music history, and keyboard literature from the Baroque to the 21st century. I structure lessons to suit the needs and desires of each student.

About Donna

I love to sing, and I have a passion for teaching students to sing well. I have sung in choruses all my life, and have been inspired by fine conductors and great composers. I am certain that music enlivens my life like nothing else, and it can do that for everyone. Whether you sing in the shower, or in the choir, or with a few friends, or in an opera, you can find your song.

Learning to play the piano, from the very beginning, or picking up where you left off in the past, will bring a spark to your life. Whether you want to play for yourself or some friends, or want to get on track to becoming a concert pianist, music will enrich your life.

My students develop an appreciation for music of the Renaissance up through the 21st century. They are willing to delve into exciting territory ...

Feedback for Donna

Donna's method of teaching gets quick results. She simplifies, presents and reinforces concepts such that I've managed to make progress with each lesson. Highly intelligent yet flexible, Donna was quick to analyze my learning process/style. Therefore, when I do falter, she knows exactly why - and helps me make adjustments.

With over 20 years of piano playing experience, Liz loves sharing the knowledge she's gathered over the years from the beginning of her music career. As the very first instrument Liz began to study, she's gathered immense detailed knowledge of piano music ranging from classical to contemporary to jazz to pop and even show-style.

About Liz

After graduating California Institute of the Arts with a multi-focus on several aspects of music including African dance, Indonesian gamelan, songwriting, recording, classical voice and piano, folk guitar, and more, Liz had the excellent opportunity to teach theater to a local musical theater summer youth program. All summer, she taught class sizes ranging from 10 to 26 students of the ages 5-10. Her initiative later led to being hired at this local community theater. Along with this theater teaching experience, she has been teaching piano, guitar, ukulele, flute & voice lessons for over 9 years. Her students have gone from knowing nothing about music to learning and performing entire pieces on their own as well as even auditioning & for agents and becoming signed artists in Los ...
