About Me

Miss Ena is always singing!

From an early age, I have been participating in music activities, such as choir as well as various musicals like 'Oliver' and 'The Sound of Music'. As music has always been one of my best friends. Like water, I enjoy drinking from the wellspring of muse and melody.

I enjoy music most when it is shared with the natural joy of children. I have an extensive background of teaching private voice, piano and guitar to children. It's the best job in the world, getting to watch a child grow through the magic of music! I received my Kindermusik license in Summer 2005. After working with Dana Harris, formerly of 'Dana's School of Music', Dana thought I would be a perfect Kindermusik teacher.

My education is both experience and university based. In 2003, I graduated from Clark College with a 3.7 gpa. During my two and a half years at Clark, I studied voice with April Brookins Duvic. I, then moved on to Portland State University. During my two years at PSU, I studied voice with Margaret Daane and piano with Connie Titterington. I also attended Marylhurst University working towards my BA in voice performance. I am now taking a break from school to work on some fundamental musical training. I study voice with Pollyanna Hancock Moody and studied piano with John Haek. I have done my best work at Marylhurst and plan to return in fall 2008.

My experience ranges from childhood productions to improv comedy groups. It is the joy of music that I shared with my late mother that built such a lifelong foundation. Singing and sharing with mom gave me some great tools for a successful life, but most importantly, it created an unbreakable bond between her and I and myself and music.

In my lessons, I'm all about music fun, but I also ask my students to work hard.
I believe a child should feel successful at every lesson. Each person has musicality within them and when a child is ready, I love to help them bring out that inner musician.

We will work on a wide range of aspects in music from theory, ear training, sight reading, rhythm and more. For piano I use the Faber collection. I will make sure getting your materials is easy and uncomplicated.

I harness years of music teaching in diverse settings (including four years' private studio plus three years as a choral director and two years as a music instructor with homeless youth) for a diverse studio meeting real artistic needs. I offer a well-rounded curriculum and dynamic approach to lessons that center around what you, the student, need and want. I am as flexible or as hard-nosed as you need me to be, as I believe musical development depends upon a fluid, mutually response teacher-student relationship. I know and teach curriculum across diverse styles and genres and can adapt and weave in student interests, themes, songs, or life goals into our practice as necessary and appropriate.

About Me

I have a Master's in Vocal Performance from Portland State University, and over a decade of vocal training and performance experience.

I teach voice lessons to kids, teenagers, and adults.

My voice students range in ability from absolute beginner to intermediate with significant previous musical and vocal training. I have helped the beginning students learn to match pitch and read notes on the staff. My beginning and intermediate students learn to sing with purer vowels, increased breath support, and use a greater range.

I also teach beginning piano to all ages. I teach students as young as 5 as long as they are able to stay focused for the duration of a half hour lesson. Most of my piano students are in the 7 -10 range, but I have taught some beginning adults as well, as a supplement to voice lessons.

*** Lesson Details ***
Voice students will learn to improve their technique through proper breathing, correct vowels, space, and resonance. I teach repertoire based on the students' interest, but I am well versed in song literature in English, French, German, and Italian, as well as opera, oratorio, and musical theatre. I can help you improve your technique for whatever style of music you want to sing.

Piano students will learn to read music, play with correct form, learn scales, and improve their musicianship skills. I teach out of lesson books (mostly Faber) to improve technique, but I want students to learn supplemental pieces that are fun for them as well.

I hope to share with you the same joy I get from making music!

About Me

Hey!

My name is Kyle S. and I'm incredibly passionate about music education for all ages. Over twenty years of playing all instruments has taught me there is not one specific way to teach music, so I change my curriculum for every student and completely customize what you learn to how you learn, and what you're interested in. I started teaching music lessons in after school programs when I was eleven and fell totally in love. I continued to do this for many years driving to neighboring towns, volunteering at church youth groups and local Boys and Girls Club all around my hometown.

I went on to study Music Education at Oregon State University and Guitar Performance at the University of Oregon and Jazz Performance on Guitar at Portland State University! At each of these Universities I taught students my age as well as locals in each town and have been supporting myself entirely through music since 2008!

In Portland I've been gigging, playing on records, recording music for films, and volunteering every week at Nonprofit Music Schools around town to help underprivileged kids, and expose them to the joy of music. *** Lesson Details ***
I'm fairly laid back, and teach from a number of different texts depending on the interests of the student. Each student is different, and I vary instruction accordingly. I have a lot of experience songwriting, composing, and playing as a sideman in groups on different instruments. I've been part of bands led by myself and been hired by other people, as well as composing for different groups of instruments from trios to full orchestras.

If there is interest, I can also provide worksheets based on the curriculum and standards held by the University of Oregon, and Portland State University.

Private home studio equipped with a many guitars, a piano, a Wurlitzer, electric bass and amplifier, two drum kits, and a beautiful kitty.

I can provide guitars, amplifiers, and notebooks for all students even if they do not own guitars or amplifiers. I also make copies and email attachments of all homework, and record lessons and send them to students to listen to when practicing.

About Me

I have a Master’s in Opera Performance from the Boston and New England Conservatories as well as graduating from Vocal Performance programs at Boston University and Western Washington University. I have sung professionally with Boston Lyric Opera, Children’s Theater Companies, churches and synagogue and have toured on the east coast as well as Athens, Greece. Premiering new music is a specialty - I can help you prepare your pieces for auditions.  My students have successful auditions for college opera and music theater programs, and as choir soloists.
Students gain a larger vocal range and an easy, natural way of singing whether it is in a rock band, choir or as a soloist. Together we find the joy of singing while building a solid technique.

I also work with small children as a Musikgarten teacher and have toured artist residency programs which introduce children to music and theater in schools.   I was adjunct faculty at the College of St. Benedict/St. John’s University, local music studios as well as maintaining my private teaching practice.

I am persistent and positive! Having worked and performed with singers and master teachers has helped me to be a resourceful teacher who understands the process of becoming a singer. I believe that a sense of fun and play helps you to accomplish your goals quickly.  For beginners you will learn how the voice works and how to care for and develop your instrument. We will choose music that interests you and helps to build your voice moving from simple to more complex and challenging. Understanding music theory and sight-reading will help you get the most out of your singing. After 3 - 6 months you should have a good command of breathing and an understanding of how to sing with an expressive tone.For the advanced student, I can help you work on trouble spots and give you tools to help with the changes that voices naturally go through.  I look forward to giving you my full focus and celebrating your growth and accomplishments!

About Me

Music is my life! I started studying at the age of 7 and never looked back. I'm about to graduate with my degree in vocal performance and have already completed my pedagogy requirements. I have 4 years of teaching experience, and 10+ years of performing experience. Currently I primarily perform opera, however I have extensive experience in musical theater, and have performed solo jazz and in vocal jazz ensembles. I am comfortable teaching any of these styles, though of course when it comes to opera younger students will start with art song and other classical styles that are more suited to the less mature voice.

*** Lesson Details ***
I take a very kinesthetic approach to teaching. I have training in body mapping, and find it extremely useful in teaching students from ages 5-100. Along with learning the music of their choice, students will learn the way the parts of their body responsible for singing work. We will develop techniques that promote the health and longevity of the voice, and avoid discomfort and unnecessary tension.

It is equally important to me that students have fun in their lessons. Music is fun, and if you aren't having fun then I'm doing something wrong.

During our first lessons students can expect to discuss what their musical goals are and how we can best accomplish them together. Throughout our time together we will review these goals, update them, and make sure that we are working towards them an effective and efficient manner. These goals can be anything from auditioning for a choir or musical to having lots of fun and finding out all the cool things your voice can do. Singing is a fun, uplifting activity and my lessons reflect that.

I incorporate at least some music theory into lessons, mainly through take home sheets, although we do take some time during lessons. The amount depends on the goals of the student, and previous experience in music. It is important that all musicians, even vocalists, understand the basics of music theory including key signatures and how to read music. The level to which we focus on theory will depend on the needs and goals of the specific student.

I do not use a specific book for teaching. I will provide some sheet music, and will provide easy and affordable (if not totally free) ways for students to get and obtain sheet music and practice sheets. I have a few method books that are incorporated depending on the age, and goals of the student. I do not require students to purchase these we will use them in lessons and if we deem it helpful I will provide electronic copies that students can print out at home.

After 3-6 months students can expect to have met at least some of their goals, and will notice an improvement in their pitch and general musicianship. They should also expect to have learned a couple of songs that will be agreed upon during lessons. The number will again depend on the age and goals of the student, the genre, and the songs themselves.

Lastly I want to emphasize the importance of open communication between student and teacher. My job is to help you reach your goals, and if I'm not doing that then I am not the right teacher for you. While I strive to meet the goals of every student, if at any time you feel that I am not meeting your goals I am happy to discuss that and figure out what the best course of action should be. This is about your musical journey and my ability to guide you in it.
