About Me

Hi! I am excited to work with students of all ages and levels, and I am here to help you unlock the treasury of our music together. I'm devoted to passing on the joy of music-making to performers of any age, whether you are passionate about musical theater, classical music, popular music, or just for the fun of making music.
As a soloist, I am a frequent performer throughout the Northeast. This season's performances include engagements with Lowell House Opera, Opera Brittenica, Cantata Singers, Opera Providence, and concerts and TV appearances with the award-winning folk music group Voice of the Turtle, as well as numerous recitals. As a classical collaborative singer, I've performed in a choral setting with the New York Philharmonic, the Dresden Philharmonic, the Philadelphia Orchestra, and other ensembles. I have studied theater extensively and have completed an apprenticeship and internship at Connecticut Free Shakespeare.

I am a published composer and lyricist of children's music, and have over six years of studio teaching experience with students of all ages. I hold a Bachelors of Music in Voice Performance from Westminster Choir College and a Masters of Music in Voice and Vocal Pedagogy from Longy School of Music of Bard College. Whether you are just starting to sing in your school's musical or are an artist looking to solidify your technique and style, I have the latest techniques to make learning to sing fun and effective for you.

*** Lesson Details ***
The atmosphere in my studio is student-centered and informal, and is built around the student's goals and stylistic tastes and abilities. Whether it is your first voice lesson or you are a working professional, the curriculum will be formed completely around you as an individual artist want to achieve.

Within 6 months of study, you will have a firm basis in vocal technique in your chosen style, and a firm grasp of the repertoire that you love to sing. Most importantly, however, you will develop a love of music and singing that you will keep throughout your life. If you are a parent, I encourage your involvement, and you are most welcome to sit in on your child's lessons and share in the music-making experience.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Full piano, music stand, private room, seating for parents.

*** Travel Equipment ***
Music stand and sheet music. A keyboard if you are without a piano.

*** Specialties ***
I have experience in performing and teaching musical theater, early music, opera, Mediterranean folk music, diction, music theory, and Shakespearean acting technique. I am currently a member of the Boston Schola Cantorum, and Voice of the Turtle, which has over 12 professional studio recordings.

Shanshan W. Boston, MA

Subjects Taught

Basic Math, Elementary Math, English, Music Performance, Music Theory, Piano

About Me

Shanshan W. has been an aspiring performing pianist ever since her decision to study music as an undergraduate. She has received BM and MM degrees at both the Eastman School of Music and New England Conservatory respectively. Fascinated with challenging techniques and fast passages even at an early age, she desires to share her experience as well as insights with her students to help them overcome various technical difficulties. With a dedication to integrity and passion for her work, Mrs. W. seeks to enrich her students with life insights as well as a deeper understanding and appreciation of music.

*** Lesson Details ***
No one student is created the same, and therefore my curriculum for each would be varied accordingly. Through knowing them more specifically as individuals, I hope to understand their individual strengths and work on their weaknesses. These characteristics may be inherent as well as learned. Some students will be learning from a formal material that move forward step by step while others may benefit more from a spontaneous choice of music from varied range of styles and composers. For those that are starting from scratch, taking the time to lay a firm foundation is essential while for others, who perhaps have had some experience playing the piano but is lacking in certain skills or aspects, would need a different approach in choosing their repertoire as well as more specifically assigned exercises. In the end, it is my hope and expectation that each student will gain the skill set they need, to be able to experience the freedom of expressiveness through music, that they will develop a genuine appreciation of the classical genre and have deeper understanding of how it speaks to them personally.

*** Specialties ***
Classical/ any periods

About Me

I grew up in a musical home and have been playing piano since the age of four. I have had all sorts of different music teachers in my life and I have always looked to them for inspiration for my own teaching--what would I do differently? What would I do the same?
In my opinion, a teacher is an extremely energetic, charged individual who is entirely focused on the progress of the student. A teacher is inspiring, motivating, and makes learning a fun and enjoyable experience. I strive for this level of excellence in each of my lessons. It is extremely important to me that my students learn at their own pace, while mastering techniques and building a strong foundation.
I teach both piano and guitar, and I am excited to start you off on your musical journey!

I was classically trained on the piano from the age of four. When I was twelve, I decided to expand my musical horizons and pick up the guitar. During high school, I became very serious about my musical studies. I attended 6-week summer workshops at the National Guitar Workshop for guitar and music theory lessons. I also began attending a magnet school program called the Regional Center for the Arts, which I did every day after my normal school day. In 2007, I began my studies at Berklee College of Music and graduated in 2011 as a Bachelor of Music with a degree in Film Scoring.
I have about five years of teaching experience. While I was still in high school, I was giving private piano and guitar lessons on the weekends. I also helped tutor my fellow students at the Regional Center for the Arts. This is when I discovered I loved teaching. During my time at Berklee, I participated in a work/study program at the Boys and Girls Club of Dorchester. I taught private piano and guitar lessons here, as well as group piano lessons. I also participated in a program called KidsJam, which gave me experience working with very little children (ages 3-5).
It is extremely important that we focus on what YOU want to learn! I can teach many different styles, from classical to classic rock!

*** Lesson Details ***
Our sessions will be laid back and comfortable, yet motivating and challenging. I expect my students to keep a journal of their assignments for each week in order to focus on moving forward with their instrument. I am extremely patient with my students. I understand that learning an instrument takes a lot of time and energy for both the student and the teacher. I understand that every student learns in a different way, and that fact drives me to be the best teacher I can be!
I believe that the most important part of learning an instrument is learning how to read notes and rhythms. In my opinion, this is the foundation of learning an instrument. For that reason, I always start my lessons with some reading. Students are expected to practice outside of our lessons. As we progress in our lessons, students will be working on a couple different songs a week, as well as a little ear training and music theory.
It is extremely important to me that the student is learning what THEY want to be learning, so feel free to bring in any songs you'd like to start playing and we'll see what we can do!

*** Travel Equipment ***
I can provide books but the student must have an instrument to play on.

*** Specialties ***
Beginning/Intermediate Classical Piano,
Beginning/Intermediate Piano (pop, rock, beginning jazz&blues),
Beginning/intermediate guitar (Jazz, Blues, Rock, Classic Rock, Pop),
Beginning/intermediate music theory.

I am also fluent in DAW software, sample libraries, and notation software including:
Garage Band, Audacity, Protools, Logic, Digital Performer, Kontakt, Vienna Ensemble, Reason, Sibelius, and Finale.

About Me

I have taught piano and voice most of my adult life. Early on I learned the need to adapt my teaching style to the uniqueness of each student, especially those whose perceptions differ widely from the general populace. I love what I do, helping each student discover and nurture their abilities, no matter what age the student may be.

The Holistic Piano method is especially effective with my Autism-spectrum students, a segment of the population I find particularly rewarding to teach.

The following is a quote from ex-student Karena Krull, author of "Drama Made Easy", and "Rummy Roots."

“Her greatest strength is her ability to find the right direction for each individual. This ability to adapt to the student's needs lends to individual success for student and avoids their frustration. If her current method or communication isn't creating success for a student she will quickly change to another till she finds the right words or method to enable the student to succeed with the least amount of frustration.”

*** Lesson Details ***
I draw on a wide range of materials in The Holistic Piano (and voice) method. The curriculum may be color-based or number-based, we might focus on chord building or sight-reading, or Songwriting, depending on the student's need and desire.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Large Music Room: one grand piano, 2 keyboards, parents can sit in on lesson from living room

*** Specialties ***
*Teachers marked as a Student Favorite have taught a minimum of 25
lessons and have received the highest feedback rating from students.Because each student is an individual, I approach teaching like a coach, custom designing a course of study for each student to meet their individual needs.
